“What a shame!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

A beautiful hotel very conveniently placed. The bad news is that we found a number of things, that could be improved upon quiet easily , that really left you feeling ripped off! We paid the equivalent of £28 for four cups of tea one afternoon!
The hotel also needs to enter into the 21st century- non smokers do NOT tolerate puffers sitting next to them at breakfast! The whole hotel smelt liked a smokers paradise during the weekend when it was full of a German Tupperware convention! Surely they are used to NOT being able to smoke in their own country!
A couple of times we were made to feel an inconvenience by the staff who serviced our room.
When paying for a stay in a hotel like the Astoria you really expect everything to be perfect.
BTW St Petersburg was a joy!

We had a wonderful stay in St P. and certainly the RF Astoria is very central and within walking distance of many tourist attractions. so on a positive note "likes" were: helpful front desk (dont penalise them for looking dour - they've got no reason to smile either about the weather or the last 100 years); breakfast awesome; rooms very tasteful; afternoon tea fantastic; check out time flexibility; food and drink well served and presented - beautiful china etc.
"dislikes" were: room service maids - they think you work for them not the other way round; smoking in the lobby and seating areas while you are snacking or eating - come on Russia - ban smoking in public places! (fat chance); prices in general are very topsy - some would say a rip off; inability to provide breakfast seating on a sunday morning due to full restaurant.....not good at all; cheese and onion crisps served as tasters with drinks (plain would be preferential!!); paying the final bill but hey ho. All in all this is THE place to stay when in St P.

Room Tip: any suite on any floor.

My family and I stayed at the Astoria for five nights as part of a trip to visit relatives in Saint Petersburg. It is well located for short walks to historic sites in the city and many excellent (and more reasonably priced, compared to my last visit) restaurants in the area. Although the hotel is not on the main shopping street of Saint Petersburg, Nevsky Prospect, it is a manageable short walk away. I would argue its location is a pleasant retreat from the crowds.

The hotel exudes old world opulence without feeling overly stuffy; most travelers should feel comfortable in the environment. Concierge service is outstanding, and English-speaking visitors should likewise feel at ease. Our two rooms were both suites and were very generously-sized (this seems to be the norm in Russian hotels of the era), and very comfortable. Both had windows that faced inside to a courtyard, which allowed for very restful sleep but less interesting of a view. Very large closets, a useful sitting area, and a very comfortable bed were all weclome amenities. Wireless internet access is available but quite expensive (800 rubles for 24 hours at the time), as were most additional services like the minibar.

The Davidoff Restaurant in the lobby offers warm service and excellent Russian-inspired food, but follows the unfortunate trend of upscale hotel restaurants being very expensive in Saint Petersburg. Fortunately, the concierge in the hotel maintains an extensive list of city restaurants, with full menus for many; I highly recommend this service, as Saint-Petersburg has a host of excellent restaurants that are reasonably priced (Khochu Kharcho and Teplo were a couple of our favorites). Ask for a city taxi to be called if you want to be driven, as the hotel cars will cost a fair bit more.

The Astoria was a great choice for our visit to Saint-Petersburg, and seems to also be popular among business travelers. The staff are very helpful, and even offered tea to a relative who had come to meet us in the lobby while she waited. It is probably also worth investigating the adjacent Hotel Angleterre, some of the facilities of which are shared with the Astoria.

Having just had four nights in this magnificent hotel I cannot disagree more with the most recent review (2nd Oct),the reception staff were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to assist us from the moment we arrived. We were upgraded to a delux double room which had magnificent views out to St Isaacs Cathedral,so thrilled they did, something very magical about waking up to that view every morning, the staff offered us two types of taxi's including their own and public and were happy to book public taxi's for us ( incidently a quarter of the price of their own) for ballet and airport return, they also allowed us a 2pm check out to enable us to do last minute sight seeing and store luggage in our room which was much appreciated. The location is perfect, walking distance of all major sights,Hermitage ten mins, but if you dont feel like walking plenty of trams and buses nearby, metro about ten mins away. There are restaurants (masses of them) nearby ,breakfast in the hotel was fabulous,we had cooked option each day plus plenty of other courses ! the restaurant staff plus the bar staff are extremely accommodating. Yes you pay for wi fi in your room but we didn't need to use it as a small business centre in the lobby that is open 24 hours and is FREE,we never had a problem with it being crowded and always got on a pc with no problem, printing for up to 10 sheets was ALSO free, this was useful to book in online for return flight and print boarding passes (and secure a decent seat with BA !) the only negative comment I would make is the ATM located just off the lobby-CITIBANK they charged me an additional £89 for a £100 withdrawal !! where I appreciate the hotel has no control over this I would recommend going to the hotel next door (Angleterre) where you can withdraw from a desk for considerably less-take your passport. The Astoria is everything you want in a hotel, just read the list by the lifts of people who have stayed here from rock stars to royal family members, film stars to politicians.Wonderful large marble bathrooms off the bedroom, high quality toileteries.Another great factor about location is that because St Isaacs is high and in view from a fair distance away you never get lost-just head towards it !Thanks to all the staff at the Astoria, you gave us a fantastic, very memorable stay at your fabulous hotel.

Room Tip: Definately choose a room that looks out on St Isaacs,it's worth the extra money (we were just so...

The Astoria delivers on all fronts and is a well managed hotel in an enviable location.

I was fortunate enough to be staying in one of their Presidential Suites which has a real wow factor, not through being ostentatious but by being beautifully furnished and homely. The views were superb and the room was blisfully quiet. Nothing to fault in terms of housekeeping and an extremely comfortable bed with great Russian linens. Master bathroom quite splendid although the shower was a little underwhelming in terms of pressure.

The front of house staff were exemplary in being both professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.

Afternoon tea in the Rotonda Lounge is excellent and very welcome after a hard day's sightseeing. Good choice of sweet and savoury dishes enhanced by Louis Roederer champagne and making an ideal meal before the opera, no rumbling stomachs to interfere with the accomplishments at the Mariinsky.

The breakfast was ok but the room doesn't quite work, it is too large and lacks atmosphere. The buffet gets jammed as it is right at the back of the room and doesn't allow much space to circulate particularly as a few guests seemed to be of the "all I can pile on one plate" approach. Dinner was fine as subdued lighting makes the room a bit more intimate but a rethink is necessary.

Bar was good, quite lively and a good place for an after-theatre dinner.

The Astoria is celebrating its centenary and they have much to be proud about. Whether the "will it ever open?" Four Seasons, also in the shadow of St. Isaac's, will give them a run for their money is yet to be seen but it will be a hard act to challenge.

I regularly stay in this hotel for its location and the feel it has of a historic hotel in St.Petersburg. The lobby, bar, etc. are very attractive, while the rooms are renovated and comfortable. It is really a pity however, that the reception staff seems to come straight out of the Soviet era; dour and sometimes plain rude. The reservations staff is worse. Formal and burocratic. When you arrive, you really do not feel like you are welcome. Can Rocco Forte not do something about this? Most other hotels in St.Petersburg have made the change and the historic Astoria deserves a professional, i.e. friendly front desk staff.
Another irritating thing about the hotel is that you pay for internet services.
