“More masterpieces than you could properly view in one lifetime”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

If you had asked me where I would expect to fine the greatest and widest collections of fine arts in the world, I would have exhausted many guesses before getting to the State Hermitage Museum.
There are so many works on display from grand masters that you dismissively walk past some of the finest masterpieces, and although the displays are very extensive the vast majority are locked away in store rooms and vaults.
Even the building is lovingly restored and maintained.
A true art lover or art historian could be happy here for many lifetimes. If you have ever enjoyed visiting an art gallery put this one on your "bucket list" it is truly beyond compare. We were unable to name a single master from any discipline who was not represented.

“Awesome as expected”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

There's so much here you don't know where to start. Everyone reading this this will alread know it's the biggest collection that money can buy. So here's some practical advice. Get there before opening time and get in the queue. You can't take food or drink in, you must check your coat and backpack into their cloakroom. You have to buy the right to use a camera for 200 Rubles. Once you're in you can't go out and get back in on the same ticket. They have a cafe that sells water and basic refreshments. You can buy access to the diamond room or the gold room, we went for the gold room and got met by a guide at a designated time and place. There was only two of us on the tour of the gold room so we could ask anything and our guide was extremely knowledgeable and we had the place to ourselves, it was an awesome and impressive collection.

“Tour the World - within the Hermitage Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

First off, dont think that its compulsory to dash around hanging on a tour guides coat. This collection of world famous art and decor is like a good wine - slow and enjoy. I bought my 2 day
pass via the internet for $25. Best move throughout my 7 day stay in st Petersburg. Major benefit is that you fast track hundreds of visitors waiting in long queues, security is paramount so dont ignore warnings. Great time is after 11am, and continue over lunch break which appears to be taken by all organised tour parties. DONT miss the Greek, Roman and ASIA displays on the lower floors. This is really a 2 day job, if you end up being caught up in a flow, you miss the chance to stand back and absorb what in mind humble opinion, is the world's best collection of art, furniture, jewellery is state hands.
This is number one on the TO SEE list. Something for everyone, every young children

“If you are interesting in Art and History highly advice you to visit Saint-Petersburg Main Museum!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

One of the greatest and biggest collections of paintings, sculptures, engravings, applied-art items and other. First visit the Ambassador Staircase, The Field-marshal's Hall, the Armorial Hall, St.George's Hall to look interior decoration of tzar's times. St.Peter's memorial throne room is closed unfortunately because of restoration. Continue a walk visiting the New Hermitage and The Pavilion Hall with the Peacock Clock, mosaics and fountains. Then enjoy paintings and sculptors of great Italian, Spanish, Dutch masters. Also must visit the 2nd floor (impressionists).

“Me and da Vinci!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

Too many superlatives for this huge, unbelievable place containing unbelievable art. Try to find a day when it's not packed, if possible. I really lucked out on a Wednesday morning and had many rooms all to myself--really! I was the only person, other than the docent, in the huge room containing the 2 da Vinci madonnas. I was able to consider both of them for a long time, and appreciate this total master even more than I did before.
