“Exceptional - modern, stylish and confident in food, wine and service. None other like it in St Petersburg!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012 via mobile

It was one of the highlights of our trip to eat at this restaurant and wine bar. We arrived on a Monday night at 9.30pm and there were several other tables of diners - already a factor in its favour, as we have experienced this weird "ghost town" effect at some of St Petersburg's other upscale restaurants whereby we would arrive and no one else would be there.

You can see why this place is attracting the patrons. They have a wine store selling a large selection of wine. The selection is diverse in price and region. You can purchase wine at the store and drink it in the restaurant by paying an additional percentage on the price - an excellent concept.

Best of all, the restaurant has a large selection available by the glass, which it stores using proper technology to preserve the freshness of the wine. I was sceptical at first, but once I tried the wine my concerns were allayed as they were all very good wine. Here is the holy grail in St Petersburg for a lover of wine!!!

The menu is modern and original and it was difficult for us to choose as it all looked so good. I had the veal kidneys to start and then the veal cheek. My partner had fois gras and fettuccine with seafood and a crab bisque sauce. They were all superb. The pasta dish was a standout, because it was done so well. As Italian is our favouite cuisine, we often eat at the best Italian restaurants back at home and so our standards are high. Grand Cru delivers!

Finally, desserts. I had a delicious, light cheesecake which was unlike any other cheesecake I've had before. My partner had mango terrine, which was sort of like a mango jelly with "carry stones" - I think this was caramel made crispy with liquid nitrogen / dry ice. Both these desserts were really fabulous.

Throughout our meal we had attentive and helpful service. The restaurant manager speaks perfect English which makes it really easy to ask questions about the menu. The sommelier is on hand to confidently and unerringly recommend wines.

What a great experience! Grand Cru wine bar could just as easily be in Rome or New York. It is a fabulous find. One of the other reviewers complained about the price, but I do not think the complaint is justified - our meal cost significantly less than at every other upscale restaurant we have visited in St Petersburg - and it was very reasonably priced on any view.

“all in all good but pricey”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

Great atmosphere. Love the wine machines, a true wine bar in Russia is hard to find and Grand Cru fills a huge hole for the wine lovers in Peter. That said, it's very pricey. Will I go back? Yes. Will I keep looking for other wine bars that offer great selection and great service at lower prices? Yes. Really, it can't be that hard. Europe and California have 100s maybe 1000s of good, inexpensive, great service wine bars... why can't Russia? Until then, I'll pay the big bucks and drink some good wine at Grand Cru.

“We'll definitely come back for more.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

Probably the best wine bar in SPb. The wine selection is limited only by the Simple's purchasing agents imagination which is hundreds of wines. Pick any bottle from the shelf and for a modest 40% uplift you can enjoy the wine you want. Also unlike the most restaurants in Russia there is large selection of wines by glass.

There is no such problem as pairing wine and food and taste emphasizes the impact of the wine, not the other way around. The menu is brief but not trivial and it has some nice surprises. The only risk is that it will be too crowded and the people next table will be too loud (the tables are pretty close which is not a problem unless people from the other table are pouring your wine in their glass). But don’t panic, I'd be really surprised to meet a noisy bunch of people ordering just a red or white in Grand Cru.

We had lots of starters: Squid ravioli and ox tail with duck pate, highly recommend both! Sardine salad (you might want to skip the horseradish ice cream though) and tuna tar-tar are very good too. The only main was Dorado - made to perfection as you would expect.

Service was impeccable. Sommelier suggested Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Le Chene Saint-Etienne Blanc (175 EUR) as one of their best Sav Blanc. It has an excellent balance of rich fruit with enough acidity and freshness in the finish to stop it beng cloying. Absolutely a food wine. You can get a case of six from Caves Direct for the same price in France.

Total bill was 290 EUR, but we'll definitely come back for more.
