It was one of the highlights of our trip to eat at this restaurant and wine bar. We arrived on a Monday night at 9.30pm and there were several other tables of diners - already a factor in its favour, as we have experienced this weird "ghost town" effect at some of St Petersburg's other upscale restaurants whereby we would arrive and no one else would be there.
You can see why this place is attracting the patrons. They have a wine store selling a large selection of wine. The selection is diverse in price and region. You can purchase wine at the store and drink it in the restaurant by paying an additional percentage on the price - an excellent concept.
Best of all, the restaurant has a large selection available by the glass, which it stores using proper technology to preserve the freshness of the wine. I was sceptical at first, but once I tried the wine my concerns were allayed as they were all very good wine. Here is the holy grail in St Petersburg for a lover of wine!!!
The menu is modern and original and it was difficult for us to choose as it all looked so good. I had the veal kidneys to start and then the veal cheek. My partner had fois gras and fettuccine with seafood and a crab bisque sauce. They were all superb. The pasta dish was a standout, because it was done so well. As Italian is our favouite cuisine, we often eat at the best Italian restaurants back at home and so our standards are high. Grand Cru delivers!
Finally, desserts. I had a delicious, light cheesecake which was unlike any other cheesecake I've had before. My partner had mango terrine, which was sort of like a mango jelly with "carry stones" - I think this was caramel made crispy with liquid nitrogen / dry ice. Both these desserts were really fabulous.
Throughout our meal we had attentive and helpful service. The restaurant manager speaks perfect English which makes it really easy to ask questions about the menu. The sommelier is on hand to confidently and unerringly recommend wines.
What a great experience! Grand Cru wine bar could just as easily be in Rome or New York. It is a fabulous find. One of the other reviewers complained about the price, but I do not think the complaint is justified - our meal cost significantly less than at every other upscale restaurant we have visited in St Petersburg - and it was very reasonably priced on any view.
