I am impressed by the opinions left by other guests, which seem to deal with another hotel.
May be we were there at the wrong period.
After 6 nights spent at the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014, it is hard to be enthusiastic.
The hotel has its advantages :
Location if not in the center (and the area is really ugly), is close from a subway station linking it to Nevsky Prospect in 4 stops. In addition yes, it is good to have a supermarket 200 m from the hotel.
Rooms (the so called suite, having a kitchenette) are well and conveniently equipped.
Good wifi connection.
Price in winter is very reasonable (around 110 euros per night), but what I have seen for spring (late May for instance) makes it outrageously expensive (around 220 euros per night)
First of all please, professionals of Russia, teach your staff to smile and say hello spontaneously to customers. Your country is beautiful, with a complex and difficult history, but obtaining a smile from a member of the staff seems to be an unreachable challenge. I do not know many places in the World giving the feeling, even in big hotels like the Staybridge, to disturb the staff each time you are asking for something or simply when you meet them.
With regard to the hotel itself, the main problem is the noise (we were on 17th floor). You can hear people speaking in neighboring rooms, and when they start to shout on the phone at 3:00 am, it is not very pleasant.
In addition, you can also enjoy the noise of people walking in the rooms in the upper floor, giving the feeling that you are in the middle of elephants, at any time during the night and the day. Last but not least, one can close the doors of the rooms only by slamming them. And yes, this is also a very noisy exercise for all the rooms around.
In brief, extremely poor sound insulation, with customers who do not seem to care about it. As a result, even with ear plugs, It was hard to sleep.
Breakfast was also a disappointing experience.
First of all, there is one single machine to deliver coffee. A good one (Jura). But made for a limited number of guests drinking expresso. Here it is supposed to serve dozens of people, all using it for cappuccinos or other "café au lait". As a result, this poor machine, pumping its milk in an external bottle, takes 2 to 3 mn for each "coffee" served. During my first attempt, I gave up after 10 minutes waiting in the queue for coffee, and the second time, being number 5th (only) in the line, I waited 12 minutes to obtain my expresso. Another machine should be available.
Food for breakfast is otherwise of very low quality (bread, pastries, yoghurt seem to be the cheapest available), and with a very limited choice (you will find only potatoes and sausage as hot food instance).
This represents only a one time experience as we preferred during the next 5 days to stay in the room for breakfast and buy better food in the nearby supermarket rather than to waste our time for this breakfast in the hotel (even if it is included in the price).
So in summary :
Yes : location is convenient, tariff during some periods can be interesting and rooms are well equipped.
No : permanent noise in the room, sometimes even during the night, poor breakfast and the concept of hospitality has still to be explained in a number of places in Russia, including this hotel.
