“Friendly and helpful staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2014

The Art-House Hotel is a reasonable budget hotel. It was warm during our stay and the staff provided a fan. Some of the rooms have AC, but not ours. It was about half a block off Nevsky Prospect. It was a bit of a walk down to the Neva River but it was a good sightseeing opportunity. The Cathedral of Our Saviour of the Spilled Blood was nearby. We walked to the Hermitage, St. Izaac's and the Peter and Paul Fortress. But you have to be ok with walking a fair bit. The hotel itself was fine although the entrance door had been graffiti'ed and the entrance hall and stairway (no elevator) was pretty shabby. The staff are very helpful. Google translate was helpful for communication. The room and kitchen were kept clean. The kitchen was available if you wished to cook for yourself or store food in the fridge.

Room Tip: Pick an AC room if you are there in the summer heat wave!

The rooms were not spacious but were nicely appointed, very clean and comfortable. A good breakfast was cooked to order (about 6 choices; you had to decide the night before) and served at a time of your choosing. Our room had a fridge, and you can use their full kitchen, or the kitchenette in the other section, to prepare some of your own meals. There are two grocery stores close by. Great location near the Moscow Station and Nevsky Prospekt, but Marata Street is busy and noisy, so if travelling there from May to September make sure to bring ear plugs. The rooms facing the street get very hot so you need to leave the windows open, or book a room with A/C. Staff were friendly and polite, and despite some language difficulties they tried to give advice re transportation and local amenities, but they did not seem to be able to resolve problems (or perhaps the management didn't empower them to do so). However, it's a very reasonably priced option in a convenient location, with lots of "character", and we would recommend it.

Room Tip: Look at their website first to see which rooms are available on the dates you need, as every room is...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

Me and my wife stayed in this hotel 5 nights on June 2014.
Location: The hotel is located 2 minutes walk from the Nevsky prospect, the metro, restaurants and cafes. It has a supermarket across the street, and is a couple of minutes walk from the izmailovsky market.
Staff: Every day there is a different worker in the reception, 2 of them speak english great and you can understand the other 2 even though they do not speak english well. The sevice is great!!! We got an answer to every question we had, they were very nice and tolerant. Even printed us 2 pages we needed for the flight.
Breakfast: You can choose every evening what to eat on the next day, Pancakes, omlets, etc... you can add a boiled egg to every choice. You get Yogurt, coffee, bread, personal cakes, jam, and juice. The kitchen itself is well equiped, and very clean. You can use it for your personal use on the permitted hours.
Room: We stayed in 2 rooms (Nefertiti and Kamelot) they were both very clean, well maintained, everything is new in the room. they even have a towel heater in the bathroom. The sheets are changed every day and the room is cleaned. Regarding the rooms, they were both great: Nefertiti is smaller which means that its cheaper, but if you don't mind the size its great, the bed is large (larger than the kamelot) and the wifi strength is better in it :) The kamelot is fancier , larger and more expensive and has a tv, dvd, which the previous room didn't have.
Reservation: I reserved through hostelworld but I saw that the price on the hotel's website was cheaper and you get 5% discount.
Upon arrival you fill out immigration froms which cost 200 rubץ per person (I understood its common).

In conclusion: The hotel is a great value for its price and I should definetly go there again!

A super spot with staff to match! The building is grest and has a warm vibe with clean and plentiful facilities! I can't thank Pete enough who helped me out with getting hold if a decent jacket to spend a week on the overland track! Without which I might not be writing this review as it was COLD and wet! Thank you so much!!!

The Art House is in an excellent location just 5 minutes walk from the action with a supermarket directly across the road. We were a little daunted when we first arrived at the red steel door however once inside we felt like locals. The hotel is small and on the third floor. There are no lifts so if you have heavy suitcases make sure you have the strength to carry them up the stairs.

The staff are very helpful and even though English is not their first or even maybe their 5th language we were still understood. Security is very good as you need a passcode to get into the building and 2 keys to get through another security door and then into your room.

The rooms are basic. Yet saying that they are clean, bright and have shower gel and shampoo xif you need them. They do not have face washers so take your own if you use one.

You also have access to their kitchen and we cooked dinner one night which was great. The bremakfast was fine. The ladies who cook it will get you toast and extra coffee or tea you just need to ask for it so don't be shy.

When we were checking out they did wants to do so the night before we left if using our credit card in case it did not work. You can also pay cash. Make sure your credit card has a PIN as our one didn't and it caused an issue as they would not accept it.

Overall the location Is great, the staff helpful, the rooms are clean, the breakfast was ample to set us up for big days of walking and we felt like locals. So if you are not looking for the Ritz then this hotel come B and B is great.

The location of this small hotel is just fantastic, on Marata Street, just off Nevsky Prospect, which is the main drag of St Petersburgh and only a 5 min walk to Moscow train station. It's about a 30 min walk straight down Nevsky to the Hermitage and you will pass many places of interest and cross two interesting canals on the way. Plenty of places to eat, drink and shop on and just off Nevsky and Marata.

There is a supermarket opposite the hotel which has a great selection of Russian food and you can cook in the hotel's excellent communal kitchen, with dining tables, all cutlery, fridge, saucepans, some spices, cooking oil, etc.

Also opposite is an excellent little French/Russian restaurant called Cafe Claret which was good and not expensive.

The rooms in the hotel are nothing special, but perfectly ok and air conditioned. It was good to open the window and see the street, but too noisy at night. One problem was having only one pillow each and too thin, but when we asked for another pillow they gave us a nice big fluffy one. The bed was quite hard too.

The breakfast was a bit hit and miss. The first day it was done by a lovely woman who spoke excellent English and gave us some Russian lessons. She offered us coffee and asked what we would like (from the options available) to eat and made toast and cooked some eggs the way we like. Her breakfast was fantastic. But we did not see her again. The next time the breakfast lady spoke no English and just plonked down 2 very greasy friend eggs in front of us. We had to ask for toast and coffee. However, these issues aside, the breakfast is adequate.

The building itself has great character and coming home to the nondescript red metal door and walking up the shabby staircase with the open windows made us feel like we were residents of St Petersburgh, not tourists. There is no lift, so be prepared to carry your bags up to the 3rd floor. The steps are wide and not too steep.

The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful, if a bit reserved in the Russian way. One guy spoke perfect English, but one lady really had no English at all, but you end up sorting it out. Note that they charge a fee for "registration" which seems to be photocopying your passport and filling out a meaningless form. This was 200 roubles per person and could only be paid in cash. We didn't mind, but we found none of our other hotels in Russia charged this (or had such a form) so we wondered later if we should have paid it.

Like the other reviews say, this is more of a cross between a B&B and a youth hostel, than a hotel. It is good value and no frills, while also being friendly and brilliantly located.

Dear guest,

we're very thankful for your adorable review of our hotel!
Regarding the registration fee: every foreigner arriving to Russia must be registered in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We provide this service and charge additional amount for this.
With regard to other hotels maybe the payment for this registration is already included in the price.

We wait for you in our hotel again!

Art House is a very good option for budget travels in St. Petersburg. Is one of the ubiquitous "mini-hotel" present in the centre of town, and is particularly good value. There are only 4 or 5 rooms, all tastefully and thematically furnished and named, for example "Retro" or "1001 nights". The breakfast is ok and prepared by a very nice lady who speaks some English. Also the lady at the reception was extremely friendly and spoke very good English. The kitchen can be used throughout the day and until midnight by the customers. I had a bathroom separated from my bedroom but for my exclusive use. Make sure to let them know at what time you arrive, especially in case of late arrival. The rooms facing the inner yard are very quiet. The position is excellent, a few meters from Nevsky Prospekt. The hotel is on the second floor. These mini-hotels are in buildings otherwise occupied by normal families so the entrance looks a bit strange - you will see a rather anonymous door from the street side, prams on the entrance lobby and so on, and this adds to the charme of the whole experience. Highly recommended!
