“What a Russian classic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

This is an amazing experience, a very traditional imperial Russian restaurant with a stunning interior. I think it's important to start from the building. It used to be the heart of Russia's artistic and cultural life, the reason we came there is because it features heavily in the novel "Master and Margarita" by Mikhail Bulgakov. In addition to gorgeous surroundings, the food is great: Russian classics like blinis & caviar, excellent sturgeon, the menu is like a spectacle of old early 1900s dishes. Wine list has some decent finds at reasonable price, although the restaurant is definitely at the high end of the price scale. Do not miss tea, as it's served in a very special way.

“Tough to find”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

The building is poorly marked so make sure your driver knows where it is. Once inside it is impressive. The food was good but the service was slow. make sure you have tea, as you will never have tea served to you like Edgar does. Although gratuities are an option in Moscow our server had the boldness to ask for a tip.

“Interesting venue but average food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

It's tough finding hIgh quality restaurants in Moscow and sadly this isn't one of them. The venue is great and full of history but it's not matched by the food. The salad and ravioli starters were OK but the suckling pig main ( for two) was no better than an average roast dinner at home; in fact it was rather dry and I could have done better in my own kitchen. In summary, worth a visit for the venue but not if you're looking for a fine dining experience.

“Classic Russian ambiance at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

If it is one of the most famous restaurant in Moscow you certainly do not feel it from outside.

This 19th century Art Nouveau mansion served as headquarters for Moscow Freemasons and recently used as a meeting place for the Soviet Writers' Union. But, step inside, go up the austere stairs and enter the main dining room, the Oak Hall, and you will be speechless.

Remarquable woodwork, oak panels, stainglass windows, crystal chandelier, glorious heraldry, unique wood curtain divider: it feels like an old time private club. Very special Russian ambiance.

We were there for lunch, it was quiet, the formal service was attentive and flawless and the classical Russian food excellent: Ukranian Borsch, ground chicken and veal cutlet shapped, mouth watering bread trolley.

If the food is good, just to soak in this Russian ambiance makes it worthwhile.
