“Troublesome stay - Endless discussions with incompetent staff”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2012

My girlfriend and I were to stay at Maxima Slavia Hotel. We arrived on two different dates and had booked two single rooms. Prior to my girls friend's arrival I booked and paid an extra price to have a double room (A) in the time where we were both there. So far so good.

Once we both got to the hotel, we could not get the double room (A), that I had booked and already paid for, but were offered to single rooms for smokers!!! After long discussions (in the middle of the night) we we offered a different double room (B), that the concierge asked us to pay for. On top of the payment, I had already paid for room A.

The morning after we met a new concierge that checked us out of the room B and checked us in to the room A I had paid for initially. From then on, I had to spend an extra three to four hours of hard discussions to not pay for the B room. It was an awful way to spend holiday time in Moscow. Lots of different staff - all the time with new and different explanations and reasons contradicting the earlier ones... Not to be recommended!

By the way: The hotel is situated very close to a very busy road - which now is being expanded from four lanes in each direction to six lanes in each direction. A lot of noise!!

Have just returned from Moscow after a 3 night stay at Maxima Slavia.

The Hotel although not in central Moscow is only a short ride into Red Square. Free shuttle bus on business days is available from the hotel to the metro station. On weekends you can get a trolley bus on the opposite side of the road from the hotel to the metro and then it's a short hop into the centre. We used both free shuttle and trolley bus options and found no issue at all and there are trolley buses every 2 minutes or so. Travel time from hotel to Red Square is about 40 minutes and this is at rush hour. Metro is busy but people are not as pushy as Paris and London and men will give their seats up for lady's or children. Get a block of 20 or 10 tickets for the metro if you can, it will save you queuing.

As for the hotel it was great. Set back from the main road so it is fairly quiet. The hotel offers snack menus in the lobby bar and also has a restaurant for breakfast and meals on the second floor. We used the lobby bar while we stayed there and the food was very good. Reasonably priced as far as hotel prices go but good quality even late at night. The hotel was quiet and not much noise from other guests, floors seem solid and walls fairly thick so a good nights sleep can be had.

We emailed the hotel and they helped us out with our visas without problems. They also allowed us to check in early as we had come in on a overnight flight from London at no extra charge which was unbelievable. The hotel also printed our boarding passes for our return flight at no charge and all in all were really helpful. The staff are very friendly and speak good English and will try and help as much as they can. We used the luggage storage on our last day and had no issues with anything going missing or lost. Wi-Fi in the room was great and also free, yes free!! Decent connection speed and was enough for checking emails and stuff.

If you get a chance visit the graveyard behind the hotel. Leave the hotel and turn right, bit of an odd suggestion but there is a special area set aside for WWII and it's a very quirky and interesting dander. Also across from the hotel is a shopping centre so if your up for browsing the local supermarket go there. There is a McDonalds and a couple of fast food outlets just in case your missing your fav burger. Across the road is a burger king so something for everyone.

In summary the hotel was fantastic, great service, friendly staff and very very helpfull. I would return to Moscow and stay here again. Spasiba.

Stayed in the Slavia for 5 nights after coming in on the TransSib. Moscow downtown hotels are pricy and overrated, so that is why we choose this one just northeast of the city centre. Three metrostops from circle-line 5 to VDNKh, and then 10 minutes on trolleybus 76. Piece of cake and very cheap. A courtesy shuttle is available on working days.
The hotel is situated on a busy throughfare but behind another building, so no noise problems. We took an upgrade to a business suite since this gives an extra sideroom AND a bathtub (which is a blessing after 4 weeks on the road...) The in-house restaurant is better than expected both for quality and price: breakfast also is just fine.
A huge hypermarket is right next door.
The staff is helpful and friendly (and for non-Russian speaking guests: most of the staff speaks good English).
In short: this hotel is value for money and I definitely will book again for the next Moscow visit.

Room Tip: Had a regular room on 4th floor in 2009 which was OK, this time an executive suite (305) which was j...

Stayed here in February for a couple of nights half board. Meals not too bad for an English palate, room really clean and warm, and a very short walk to a hyper market/fast food outlets. Staff were friendly and some good banter in the bar with staff and other guests (smoking permitted).

Tremendous value for money, recommended.

The hotel is very clean and staffed by REALLY friendly Russian folks. Many of them are students who speak very good English. They are happy to converse with you at the bar, and are VERY helpful and personable at the front desk. And yes, I encountered my fair share of what they call the Russian "outside persona" - which is horrible - in my wanderings.

My best piece of advice is to make sure you have the metro map in Cyrillic, if you take the metro into town. Get this from the hotel (it's in one of the guide books in the lobby). You won't be able to get one at the metro stations, trust me. My Fodors only had it in English - and that doesn't get you far, trust me.

I loved the fact that they had a currency machine in the lobby - insert dollars and it spits out Rubles (-: no trip to the bank necessary!

Also, it's worth a walk down the road to the cemetery in the back of the hotel. It is VERY cool and interesting!
