We really enjoyed our visit to this house museum. It was a little difficult to find from Park Kultury metro but our persistence was more than repaid.
The fascinating house, maintained in pristine condition, conveys the portrayal of a happy family life that we felt doesn’t reflect the psychodrama that was played out over 20 years within the Tolstoy family.
We found the museum very interesting, beginning on the ground floor with a suite of rooms including the dining room with a set table. Tolstoy’s bedroom and those of the children were lovely to see. The numerous portraits and paintings on the walls add to the family atmosphere.
Tatyana’s room with her paintings and sketches conveys her artistic talents. Tolstoy’s own study where he wrote some of his books is suitably atmospheric with its dark desk and furniture.
A number of other displays we found appealing. On the landing is a stuffed bear with a tray where visitors left their card. We also saw Tolstoy’s bicycle which apparently he learned to cycle at 67.
