I stayed at the Golden Apple last month for 4 nights during a visit to Moscow. I chose it over the big chain luxury hotels due to its location, its great reviews here on Trip Advisor, and its emphasis on security. Overall, I was very happy with the hotel and would definitely stay again.
The breakfast buffet was fantastic, although I would have liked to have seen more Russian food - no kefir, no Russian tea. The bar was very expensive, although normal by Moscow standards, but very chic. We didn't eat in the restaurant but the menu looked good with sushi and some Russian standards.
The location was superb. A few minutes' walk to Chekhovskaya metro station and about 10-15 minutes on foot to Red Square. Some of the big luxury hotels are much closer to Red Square, but the walk down Tverskaya street was pleasant and gives you a chance to see a little more of the city. As regards overall safety in Moscow, take the warnings with a large pinch of salt - the city is nowhere near as scary as the blogs and guidebooks would have you think.
Nevertheless I appreciated the security measures taken inside the hotel - using the card key for your room to activate the elevators, no porters hassling you for tips, and safes in all rooms. The staff were also friendly, professional, and efficient. Our cleaning lady was also very warm and funny - a typical motherly Russian!
My one criticism of the hotel would be the photos on its website. As the previous reviewer noted, the large building bathed in blue light on the website is somewhat removed from reality. Not that the building is ugly by any means, just not as spectacular as it appears online. Also, the photos make the rooms look huge, whereas in reality, they are decidedly on the small side. The hotel has obviously hired a very skilled photographer, but there is really no need for such exaggerations as they only lead to disappointment upon arrival, and anyway, the hotel is fine as it is.
I can't wait for my next visit to Moscow, an incredible city, and I'm pretty certain that I'll be back at the Golden Apple next time.
