We stayed 3 nights at the Sovietsky Hotel in May through a Trafalgar Tour, If you wanted an extra night (which we would have liked to have had) Trafalgar insisted you pay $460 Australian. This is certainly not the rate they were paying, nor the rate shown on Trip Advisor. At that price we were not willing to extend - and as we were dissatisfied with the Hotel, we are glad we didn't - despite loving every other minute we had in Moscow. Though even at the price shown on Trip Advisor, we still think it is dear after how we found the Hotel.
At first appearance it looks a grand old hotel (still hammer and sickles shown everywhere). However, we felt our room was very ancient - no fridge, no facilities for making a cup of tea, a single pedestal sink in the bathroom with nowhere to put anything except on the floor, a shower that didn't work, and no internet in the room (this is rather standard in most hotels these days - and certainly should be in one the price of the Sovietsky). Yes, there is supposed to be a computer in the foyer that people can use free of charge, but it was not there for us as the floors were being redone - hence everyone was very much up the creek.!
We felt the breakfast selection was poor. There actually was a station where a chef would cook you an omelet but he was only there one morning. The orange juice dispenser broke, there was only one type of bread available, the hot dishes were barely warm.........
As for room service - well..... One night we decided to have it and looked at the sumptuous leather bound gold embossed menu. The dishes described made our mouth water. We rang through our order but a few minutes later the phone rang to say that one of the dishes we had selected was priced wrongly in the menu - it should have been 1523 roubles instead of 640 roubles as listed. Also the lamb my husband had ordered was off. We then tried another dish, but it was off too. Whilst mulling over what to then have, we were told "we have some rissoles"!!
I lived in the Moscow in 1965 and I can tell you that the Sovietsky Hotel is definitely a blast from the past in more ways than one.
The address on Trip Advisor (shown when I was writing this review) is wrong. It is in Leningradsky Prospect, not Leninsky Prospect.
