I stayed at the Katerina City Hotel for 2 weeks in March of 2012.
The good: Location is decent. The bar and the bartenders were excellent. Some of the food in the restaurant is quite good (I recommend the toasts, steamed salmon, and the club sandwich). The staff is very nice and helpful, but they aren't always so good with directions. The rooms were small, but cozy. Breakfast is ok, but nothing special--stick to the restaurant food.
The bad: The bathroom...everyone seems to comment on this, but the hotel doesn't seem to do anything. First, the bathrooms are very old with grungy tile and mildewed grout. The shower had no door, only the thin curtain which allowed water to spill out into the rest of the bathroom. When I arrived, there was a puddle in my bathroom presumably from a faulty sink or from the shower debacle (though, when pointed out, it was taken care of quickly). Make sure to bring your own shampoo and conditioner unless the all-in-one dispenser on the wall is ok with you. My room also had no closet, only a small wardrobe that would fit 3-4 suits. Even though it's not their fault, while I was there, construction was being done outside my window (just in front of the hotel) with jack-hammers from around 9am until around 4-5 pm for a week or so.
Whenever someone on here complains about the price, the response is always "you stayed during exhibition times," but it doesn't cost anymore to run the hotel during exhibition, so put that money into some remodeling of the bathrooms.
Since taxis are a bit of a challenge in Moscow, the hotel will provide you with a taxi for a flat fee (which is a bit steep, but ok). Make sure that the driver knows where you are going before departure, however. I had an unfortunate experience one evening when the driver had no clue and I was not dressed to be stranded outside in Moscow after being dropped off at the wrong location.
Overall, I give them 3/5. Definitely a decent hotel, but not worth the money without some renovations.

Dear Christopher, thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear you were not completely satisfied with the bathroom. All the Large rooms have showers with doors, tiles are of different color, closets are bigger, there are bottles of shampoo and conditioner as well as a coffee and tea set - perhaps you will like a Large room more? Good to hear though that the puddle caused by the faulty sink was taken care of quickly. The hotel opened in 2000 and I dare to say has been kept in very good condition with no bathrooms having mildew, we work hard on that, Renovations are being discussed, we will keep our guests informed as soon as we have something to share.

Traffic and taxis and really a challenge in Moscow, very good tip to other travelers to make sure the driver knows where you are going.
Kind regards, Katerina
