“Overpriced and outdated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012 via mobile

Checked in with high expectations. Stayed in many Marriotts but this one does not live up to the standards.. Rooms are a bit outdated, noisy and everything is overpriced. Internet access is very expensive and extremely slow. The food in the restaurant is very overpriced and of low standards. A disappointment for me...

The pros:
Great central location on Tverskaya with lots of shops and restaurants around. Excellent bedding - a choice of 6 or 7 pillows, super soft duvet and mattress cover; AC work, so easy to set precisely the temperature one needs; great shower; very helpful staff.

The cons:
If I weren't on expenses and this was my visit to Moscow as a tourist I would never stay there - too expensive. Not even the room rate (I paid c.£220/night with early booking pre-payment) but anything else you decide to buy or use at the hotel. The rate seems to be starting at around £7 for everything. A bottle of water in your room - 350 roubles (£7); internet for an hour - £7; a shot of vodka in the bar (nightcap) - £7. Most annoying is that there's no free wi-fi at the hotel and the rate for 24 hours is around £20. Breakfast at the hotel - £20 (but then, in all fairness, when we ventured out to a cafe nearby we ended up paying c.£20 for breakfast anyway). Moscow is just unresonably expensive, period.

Room Tip: When you need a taxi first check at the reception which direction of Tverskaya you need to go. It ma...

Staff very friendly and the majority of them spoke english. Breakfast buffet and the food in the lobby bar is excellent. I recommend to try Chicken Kiev!! The lobby is very nice and welcoming. Rooms soon need to be renovated otherwise the prices are not justified and there is a lot of competition in this price range. Had to pay wifi extra in the room which I think should be included. Only one elevator to the rooms as one was out of order my entire stay so you had to wait long. I will return :-)

Room Tip: Choose high floor

Large rooms with very nice location. Easily accessible from the airport by aeroexpress train or by a taxi. Service is excellent. The prices for Moscow are more than reasonable. Very close to the Red square.

I normally stay in this hotel when travel on business. The hotel is well located and very close to metro stations. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable and have all you need (including tea set and iron board). If your room is facing the main street it will be very noisy due to the traffic. The breakfast is extremely good with plenty of food including caviar. Internet is very expensive and you can have a free access in the lobby. This hotel is always busy and the lobby and conference rooms are full of people. Concierge desk is very helpful if you need a reservation in the restaurant or other help. I would recommend Marriott Grand for business travellers and choose other Marriott hotels like Marriott Aurora or Marriott Courtyard if you travel for leisure.

Room Tip: If your room is facing the main street it will be very noisy due to the traffic.

I've been staying in this hotel twice a year for five years now. My company does events there, so I had enough opportunities to assess how things work here.

You can see that some cost cutting measures were taken after the 2008-2009 crisis: no more bottle of French wine and friut on arrival, simplified slippers and less luxurious breakfast, etc. When it comes to the essentials nevertheless, it is still the same: not the fanciest room decor, but still decent style, with good room size. Very conveniently located for going to the Red Square, some theatres, travelling by tube, etc.

The staff in my opinion is very good. Compared to some other hotels in Moscow Mariott Grand employees can speak decent English, are very polite, quite quick and ready to fix a problem if it arises.

The lobby is nice, though area at the bar gets very smoky. Often there is life piano music in the evenings.

Hotel is always very clean. Over my ten visits cleanliness could never be faultered.

Breakafst used to be better than Mariott breakfast in England. They toned it down now, but red caviar is still on offer:-).

My recommendation: if your budget affords and you are not looking for a romantic ambiance, but for a well oiled hotel machine - go for it.
