First up, as others have pointed out, the hostel is located in an unmarked, anonymous building. There is no signpost outside whatsoever nor anything on the door buzzer to confirm the presence of the hostel.
Once buzzed in, which will have to be the case every single time you enter the premises since there is no key or card-entry system, you have to go through a downstairs hall full of rubbish and building materials which smells very strongly of paint or thinners or something like that. Up a flight of stairs and through two more sets of doors till you get to the hostel itself. It is apparently your job to close all these doors.
The facilities, dorms and private room are all tired, stained and in desperate need of a lick of paint, a deep clean and renovation.
There are two communal bathrooms to serve the entire hostel. Both have semi-opaque glass doors and one is directly opposite the reception desk. Not the best, if you like a little privacy. The tiled walls have deep mould in the grouting. There is no extractor fan/ventilation and this is the inevitable result. Going into the bathroom after someone has taken a shower is uncomfortable and sweaty. The second bathroom does not have a shower booth, but the shower is in the bath. The washing machine is also located in this cramped space.
I think the staff probably do their best to keep the place clean, but the whole premises desperately needs a re-fit and a re-design to come up to modern standards.
The ridiculous buzz-in entry system means that throughout the night the reception buzzer keeps ringing while the poor reception staff have to get up and manually open the entrance doors.each time.
This place is definitely not deserving of the inexplicably favourable review I found in Lonely Planet. I was told there had been a change of ownership, so this might explain things a little, but it is frankly an insult to charge visitors for the quality on offer.
The only reason it gets two stars from me was for the one or two staff members who I found polite and helpful.
