“Never again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2014

For the beggining this is not a hotel, it is just and agency that rent apartments around the Moscow.

-We made a reservation to stay in one of their apartments by booking. They charge our credit card 2 weeks before comming to their hotel. In the hotel rules they say different. That was the first thing we didnt like!
-We called them and told them we will come late, because of late flight. They said it is not a problem and their agent will meet us there. We came to the flat, which looked scary. We knocked on the door and noone opened. We called on every number of their agency we had and no answer. After waiting one hour we needed to find a new hotel room in the middle of the night. Next morning we called them and tell them the whole story and they said they will try to fix. After calling us 1937 times asking us the same thing and made us big telephone bill, they told us to meet in the afternoon.
-The apartment was nice and new, could be more cleaner. They wanted a deposite but we insist to not pay and we want them to give us money back.
-They give us back 3/4 of one night price.

We do NOT recommend it to the demanding, unflexible, bussines people.
For sure we will never be back again!

Being in Novy Arbat at the number 26 simply gives you one of the best location to go wherever you need in Moscow. You have the Lotte Plaza just in front... Smolenskaya underground is walking distance as well as Old Arbat... the Red Square and Kremlin not too far.. From my apartment at 23rd floor I could see Kutuzovsky with historical Ukraina Hotel, the White House and on the distance the Moscow City. If location is great, the level of the flats is really so and so...
Internet works OK ( I checked the speed and it's around 4mega.. enough to see your email and the news from home, but wuite slow if you are looking for video or skype connection ...) washing machine and iron is a great help if you travel light ( as I always do...)
so..in conclusion.... if you are ready to accept bathroom not that clean, old corridors (with bad smell of smoke..as people do not smoke in their apartment but in the common spaces like the corridors or next to the elevators), the old lady at the entrance looking to you with suspect, and an overall atmosphere that reminds the post-Soviet era.... the place is good for few days even when you travel for business ( as I did...)

We decided to rent a flat, as travelling with the family this gives us the opportunity to cook and having a washing machine. The flat was in Novyj Arbat, central AND noisy street, new but low quality furniture, new and clean bath and kitchen (most important!). Unfortunately we had some problems in arranging the meetings to get and then give back keys, as the manager both times said he would call back and did not, then he told me to contact the Agency, but there was o connection, luckily I speak Russian and I could arrange things with the cleaning lady.
Another big problem was that, according to Russian use, after two days we found a note near the lift doors, saying that hot water would be switched off for TEN DAYS: had I not spoken Russian, nobody would have told us! After two days, we found a small instant boiler hanging on the shower, and that was all! No need to say we got no money back.

Perhaps I didn’t do enough research before making the booking through Expedia. I was under the impression that ‘Kvart Apartments’ was an apartment hotel, but it’s not - it’s actually a company which lets out a number of apartments dotted around Moscow. Don’t be misled by the address or map location shown on reservation websites – our apartment was located at an entirely different address.

After making the booking, I received an email from Expedia informing me that “no apartment can be confirmed before arrival”. This was slightly worrying – I’d booked an apartment but didn’t know where it was! After several phone calls and emails to Expedia and Kvart Apartments, I learned that we’d been allocated an apartment close to Kurskaya metro station. They also informed me that we wouldn’t need to register for immigration (‘visa registration’) as we’d be in Moscow for less than 72 hours; otherwise they would have charged us £42 GBP (approx 1,930 Rubles) per person!

The day before our arrival, I was sent a text message confirming the meeting time with the agent at the apartment. On our arrival, she helpfully showed us how everything worked, and asked for numerous signatures on various copies of the rental agreement.

Our apartment overlooked the multi-lane inner ring road. The double glazing helped to keep out most of the traffic noise. Although the building had a lift, there were still a number of stairs which had to be negotiated. The apartment itself was spacious, very clean and well equipped. From nearby Kurskaya metro station, it was just one stop into the centre of Moscow.

With hindsight, for our stay of just two nights, it would have been much easier for us to stay in a hotel rather than in a Kvart apartment. For a longer stay, however, a Kvart apartment could be a viable option. In our experience (we’d also stayed for a previous three nights in a St Petersburg apartment) if you intend booking an apartment in Russia, you might need to:

• Spend some time emailing or on the phone to the apartment company to clarify details
• Know a few words of Russian
• Commit to fixed arrival and check-out times
• Carry your baggage up stairs, even when an elevator is advertised
• Spend extra time at your destination picking up keys from the office location, checking out etc
• Be confident with directions, security codes and awkward key locks
• Pay more, and take more time, for immigration registration, than at a hotel
• Expect a shabby entrance to the apartment
• Prepare plan B in case your arrival is delayed and you’re unable to meet with the rental agent at the appointed time
• Have email or mobile phone access for communication with the rental agent while in Russia
