“Nice Collection of Traditional Artefacts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

Although a relatively small place, you can get a great sense of the world which used to be the reality of villages around this area. Costumes, tools and pictures show you how Transylvanian peasants used to live, work and celebrate, which even today occurs in some remote places.

“Absolutely loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

As the daughter of a Transylvanian Saxon Dad who was born in Bistritz, Transylvania, then part of Hungary but now part of Romania, it was great to visit this museum to imagine what it must have been like for my relatives to grow up in the Carpathian foothills and basin, mostly as Saxon farmers and merchants. The exhibits were well organized, with artifacts of everyday life displayed, such as for fishing, weaving, cooking, etc. They had a nice display of the various types of pottery from the different ethnic regions, a small display of musical instruments, an amazing display of embroidered and colorful clothing in a mirrored gallery that made me wish someone from Madison Avenue would come to be inspired, and maybe we'd see these types of outfits strolling down the catwalk at the next fashion show!!!! I wished that I could buy some clothes like these somewhere!!! It is my favorite kins of museum, I prefer information about folk life over royalty any day.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

I liked everything about this museum - the shallow draught boats and other fishing equipment, the gallery of models in amazing hats, the brightly coloured decorative pottery, the even more brightly coloured carpets, the extraordinary blown up black and white photographs of old country activities and feasts....

Above all I appreciated how, in an age of increasing uniformity, this museum celebrates human diversity - something in which Romania must be one of the richest countries on earth.

(The Danube Delta is also extraordinarily rich in that respect.)

There's a pleasant atmosphere inside, with light, modern spaces and plenty of places to sit down. And there's a small souvenir shop downstairs, where among other things I was delighted to find a few pieces of the famous Korund pottery on sale.

“One of the best ethnographic collections I have seen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

Beautifully designed exhibits! Their gift shop was closed, as it was out of season, but a conservator kindly let me know about a village 20 km out of town where I found everything I was looking for.
