“"A man-made island resort"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013 via mobile

Well done, Plantation Bay resort and spa.

The holiday for me n my friends was a short weekend get away. You all did a very amazing job, starting from the arrival at the airport till the day we checked out.

We arrived at airport on Thursday, 08.08.13, and were picked up by your friendly airport representative with a great smile and the uniform he was in made him stood out from the rest.

The car journey was quick, however we noticed slightly before arriving at the hotel, the village view outside the hotel looks a little demoralizing.

We arrived in the hotel but skipped the lobby / reception and was driver directly to a unit UT3 (if I'm not wrong). Overwhelming warm welcome by 4 staffs, made us feel like we were very important people, but all 4 of us was dressed down. We were clearly explained that the our booked Riverboat suite is currently in the midst of cleaning and was not ready for us hence we were provided with this temporarily holding room to relax meanwhile.

We walked around the resort to see what's around us and we quickly noticed that we are actually being caved into this "man-made" island resort that had walls so high that they have built to block out the "unglamorous" sight of the village outside , feels like Jurassic Park, without the dinosaurs but a beautiful resort style.

We got out keys to out River Boat suite shortly, and we were overly excited to see the opened air living room faces the saltwater pool and the surroundings of the whole area was Water and sand. It mimic very very well of a Sea front facing bungalow unit. It's was weird at the start, for some of my friends as they thought it was suppose to be a real sea front, (perception derived from photos online)

Kudos to the concept. Love that its like a "manmade island" surrounded by sand and sea water without the waves, BUT there was tide, the water in the pool in from of our RB rises and falls... Which was pretty amazing.

The living room was huge n comfy, including 3 deck chairs on the private tanning platform. Sometimes though they got hijacked by other user even though these were private ones for us.

The bedrooms and bathrooms was very big. Comfy and nice. Aircon in room wasn't too cold but fortunately it came with ceiling fan in all bedrooms.

We dined in some of your outlets, like Savannah grill for late lunch, (feedback : we think the sausage buns were slightly overpriced).
We had Fiji for dinner, it was amazing, and the Seafood platter was delicious and definately value for money. We had our last meal at Kilimanjaro cafe, before check out. Overall dining experience were excellent.

2 of us went for a Spa relaxation indulgence package for a 2 hours enjoyment (09.08.13, 1600hrs). I highly recommend the spa to provide some proper Spa music, relaxing ones (flutes, water, birds kind of music). I was into my first hour of relaxation, but the speaker in the treatment room burst out Beethoven music blasting in the room, gave me a shock, I'm sure many of us must have been disturb by that uncalled for music.

Summary:
It's been a pleasure staying at your resort, your staff are your gems, they smile, they are young and energetic and they are so honest about the No tipping policy. This resort is a beauty of its own.
Forget abt the view of the outside village, be forgiving about beatiful resort style small private real Sea and beach front that allows you to do sea sport. This resort I agree has everything built-in within the resort. It is a beautiful place, though man made, but certainly everyone would appreciates the concept and design that was factor in building this "Man Made Island".
I look forward seeing you soon again!!!

Cheers,
Christopher

Dear Christopher,

Many of our guests are young professionals like yourselves who appreciate our efforts at providing them with an ambience that truly feels "away from it all."

We're glad that you were so satisfied with the resort layout as well as our staff, and that you liked our food especially Fiji's Combination Seafood Platter

Thank you for taking the trouble to write such a detailed review, with very specific observations and suggestions. This is the kind of TripAdvisor review which really helps readers understand what our resort is all about, and thus allow them to make an informed decision.

We too look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

We were a family of four (American/Filipino) and stayed 6 days (so I got a 25% discount). That said, I sprung for the 2 Bedroom Suite, so $350 a night. Well worth it, as family will be visiting you nonstop and staying over. You will need the room. By the way, our visitors never had to pay anything. The setup for the 2 bedroom suite is second floor, two individual enclosed bedrooms with full huge bathrooms in each, closed and air conditioned, both with patios. In between is an open air living room area, and another bathroom, also connected to the patios, all overlooking the lagoon (their main man-made saltwater lagoon). In total this is a huge living space. Our building was the Iguasu building. Nice quiet area, some mosquitoes but not bad. You will see a bat fly through at night. With your room rate you get unlimited swimming in about 10 interconnected salt and freshwater pools, and they have kayaks to use. Also free rock climbing wall, pitch and putt golf area, archery, and free gameroom until 6pm, also in there is exercise room and free computers to use with printer. I also did the gun range (about $2 per bullet, but where else can I fire an Armalite M15 with grenade launcher?). They also have air pistols for the kids. The place has an outdoor restaurant area on the beach with a show every night. They have the usual aquatic offerings, we only did the tandem Parasailing for about 10,000 pesos. Scary but nice, just don't try when it's windy. The clientele was about 95% Asian (Korean). Fairly well behaved, some smokers, and they never said a single word to me or even waved, but I had a very relaxed enjoyable time with my family and visitors. The Filipino workers are EXTRA friendly and nice. The food was OK, they had kids meals too.

Dear Man R,

Thank you for the kind review of your six-night stay at Plantation Bay. We're happy that you found your suite ideal for a family reunion and get-together with friends, and that you found our staff very friendly.

It is nice to know too that you enjoyed our facilities, especially the Firing Range, which you visited twice. Next time you come back, check out its 1911 Colt .45 pistol too!

Plantation bay is a paradise for me. Enjoy water activities aside from swimming, they have aqua rides, jet skis, banana rides, kayak, etc. indoor activities for kids and adults. Enjoy the 4 fresh water pools, mist caves, volcano fountains, waterfalls of every sizes. The rooms, really good for family, with queen beds, big bathroom with tub, family room where you can play your favorite games. A veranda where you can relax at night. No dull moments. Overall, the best if not one of the best resort and worth the price. Try it.

If i hear someone who is planning to have their reception in Plantation Bay I would really do everything to convince them not to. Why? ....
Aug 3 reception by the beach. It rained hard it almost feel like a typhoon signal number 2. Organizers events personnel now visible. Area was flooded, food were wet because of the rain. Towels were distributed to few, when i asked for a glass they told me its being washed.. what ??? No back up plan they intend to wait for the rain to stop which it never did..we opted to stay and get wet since the groom is a family. U dont blame ur family because of others mistake. We stayed tried to have fun and enjoy although the situation already ruined it. No assistance nobody appologized for not providing a back up plan or atleast if the couple insisted on the venue atleast to lessen the damage they could have added tents or whatever. Everyone got sick the following day.

Dear vanaikee,

We are sorry that a sudden heavy downpour got you wet and of course affected your enjoyment of this wedding reception.

Three times on the day of the reception, we advised the bride that rain was expected, and we made a complete duplicate reception set-up indoors (at considerable expense to us, which was not charged to the couple). However, the final decision was up to her, and she chose the outdoor venue. There were outdoor tents, but strong winds (uncommon in Mactan) blew rain in.

We do occasionally have outdoor receptions which are rained on, but in most cases the guests are focused on sharing a joyous occasion, rather than on finding fault. In this particular case, the bride herself expressed to us her sadness that some of her guests couldn't just overlook some personal inconvenience and instead be happy for her on her wedding night. What most affected this evening for the new couple was not the rain or any defect on the hotel's part, but the eagerness of several of their guests to wallow in negativity and find fault with their choice of venue.

We had a wonderful stay at Plantation Bay. We stayed at the start of our trip to the Philippines and a few days at the end of our trip. We had a poolside room, in a quieter area around a lovely pool surrounded with frangipani trees. The room had two comfortable queen size beds - plenty of room for a family of 4. Great bathroom too. There was plenty to do with swimming, kayaks, snorkeling, karaoke and shooting! Our girls loved the variety of pools and slides, bike rides and buses to transport you around - lots of fun.
The food was great - we ate in all the restaurants, lots of variety and a range of prices - the meals are good sizes and we could easily share 2-3 dishes between 4. Loved the fresh coconuts! We particularly enjoyed the Fiji restaurant. Also great to be able to get a coffee from the coffee shop early in the morning.
The spa was lovely - great set-up in Japanese style gardens.
The staff were excellent!! Very friendly and great service - nothing too difficult. From the check in staff to waiting staff to lifeguards and cleaning staff. Everyone working hard to make sure we had a wonderful time! My only little gripe was that I thought the breakfast buffet was a little expensive at 950 ++ pesos. It did look good but a little pricey if you are there for a while but you can order something off the a la carte menu - like an omelette or pancakes for oh 2-300 pesos so something for everyone!
To top off a very relaxing stress free stay there was a jazz musician playing by the pool in the evening on our last night - what a lovely touch - he was brilliant!

Dear Claudia T,

We frequently welcome guests from Hong Kong, and like you, all of them appreciate our family-friendly atmosphere, various leisure activities, good food, and attentive service.

It is nice to know too that you enjoyed your initial 3-night stay so much that after your other travels, you came back to stay for 2 more nights prior to returning to Hong Kong. You even got to try our massage and had a memorable send-off from our jazz musician!

Thank you for kind review.

This was our fifth time to the Philippines and our first time to Plantation Bay, I had always wanted to stay here and was regularly following reviews on Tripadvisor. I now feel that after two weeks staying there I can give a very honest review of the resort and I will say that many previous reviewers have been harsh and dishonest. Firstly, the resort is man-made so of course the rocks, lagoons and caves are artificial, however in my two weeks there I did not come across one artificial tree, as one reviewer mentioned. In fact the resort has a very natural feel to it. The gardens are well maintained, the pools are cleaned regulary ( we witnessed them down on hands and knees scrubbing the empty lagoons at midnight). The room we had was bright, clean, roomy and airy, everything worked perfectly from the air con to the pay tv. The highlight of our two week stay was the hospitality from the exceptional staff, every person we dealt with was extremely friendly, polite and could not do enough to ensure our stay was pleasant. Our children enjoyed the open spaces and the abundance of activities including archery, rock-climbing, diving, canoeing and fishing. The breakfast took on a new cuisine each morning and it was always tasty and plentiful. If it was not to your liking there was always a fruit, omelette, cereal and salad station. For dinner we ate in all restaurants and the service was impeccable at all times, yes at times maybe a little slow, but when on holidays - who cares? The food prices are very reasonable, I do not think that paying $10-$15 US for a main meal is outrageous when staying in a 4-5 star resort. If guests want to eat for less I suggest they head to a local mall or market. Yes, the resort is in a remote part of Cebu and there really is nothing else outside of it, but surely you would do your research beforehand and realise this. If you really feel the need to go exploring , taxis are readily available. We went to Planation Bay to relax and that is just what we did. I find it astounding that previous reviewers want 5 star service, facilities and cuisine for 2 star prices, it is quite frustrating to read. Congratulations Plantaion Bay on running such a world class resort, you were recommended to us by international friends who return year after year, and we too will return.

Room Tip: We had a two room apartment with lagoon views- perfect for a family of five!

Dear choobsta,

We're pleased to learn that, as an extremely well-traveled family who have been all around the world, you and your children enjoyed your stay in Plantation Bay so much that you plan to return.

And thank you so much for your kind words about your room, the staff, food, and leisure facilities. Considering that you stayed here two entire weeks, it is nice to know that during all this time you never ran out of things to do, and that you not only liked most of the food, you found it reasonably-priced.

We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

I visited this place with my daughter and her husband and their two sons upon the recommendation of fellow Filipinos from the U.S. My daughter is very picky and always stays at 5star hotels in the U.S. so I was nervous about Plantation Bay and was hoping it would be up to her standards. I would say "not bad" for the money. The resort was very efficient, there was a driver who picked us up at the airport and drove us to the resort. Upon arriving at the resort, they seemed a little bit disorganized with our check-in per U.S. standards or what we are used to but they somehow knew what they were doing and got us all checked in with cold towels to freshen up and had my daughter's room ready and mine was not but they were apologetic and were trying to make up for it by offering drinks and snacks. When I finally got to my room which was in the spa section, it was well worth the wait plus the package I paid for that included a couple's massage and a drawn bath with rose petals! Way cheaper than what I pay at Fairmont's Willow Stream! My room was very zen...
As for my daughter, she was impressed with the resort, the rooms, quality of service, the food. Everyone was always so helpful! My grandsons spent a lot of time in the humongous pool and they even had water slides! This was their first time in the Philippines and everything was clean and they didn't get sick! Kudos Plantation Bay Resort and Spa!!!

Room Tip: Choose the spa package... so worth it!
