“Lovely Resort, shame about the rooms!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2011

We stayed at the Maribago over easter for 3 nights, having just returned yesterday. The report itself is very beautiful, lots of space and even though there were a lot of people, there were three or more swimming pools plus a couple large beaches so felt a lot less busy.

We stayed in the Garden Wing Deluxe Room, so there was a swimming pool right in front of our room. The swimming pools were large and the landscaping was beautiful. The room also had a small terrace with a table and chairs in front so that you could sit outside if you preferred.

The staff were very friendly, and very attentive. The reception staff gave us lots of tips for the excursions we wanted to take and even helped to call and speak to the local staff for an island hopping tour that we booked (which wasn't through the hotel). When we got bored of the sun, there were wi-fi zones around the hotel, we played pool or ping pong and went to the gym. The gym was free and clean but very basic, with only about 4 machines and a weights area, plus a tv.

We went to a couple of their themed dinners and really enjoyed the shows - one was based on Hawaiian dancing and the other was a local type of dancing. The food however was not too great, but I think we just got unlucky. One other night we went to the Cove for a seafood meal and thought that the value for the meal was excellent. We had lobster, garoupa, scallops and rice, which were all freshly picked from the tanks by us and weighed on the spot by the staff. The staff spent a lot of time showing us each tank one by one, telling us about the seafood and how it would be cooked. Amazing time. We also had fresh oysters (a dozen) and 2-for-1 cocktails at the oyster bar every day between 4-6pm, which looked over the beach and ocean. A perfect place to end the afternoon after all the sun. The breakfast was included in the room so cant complain much, but it was aimed towards locals or Asian tastes more. The only western item we could enjoy was some bacon, eggs and some toast, which was fine, but would be great to have more variety.

I have to say that our room, which was the cheapest, was the biggest downfall. It was on the ground floor and so whenever someone walked past, you could hear them very easily. This was often the staff who were pushing carts or trolleys around etc so very loud rattling. The rooms dont have proper windows, but more wooden shutters that slided open and closed so no proper insulation against noise. Also as the window faced the bungalows opposite, it was very very dark. During the day, we had to have all the lights on to be able to see anything in the room so it wasn't pleasant staying in there. Best to request an upstairs room if you are in these garden wing rooms as it had a balcony but the doors slided open to let more light in.

Another issue with the room was that there were bugs everywhere. I woke up with a caterpillar crossing in front of my nose on my blanket. We then went to the bathroom to find an ant infestation all over our sink. There were ants in our toothpaste, on our toothbrushes, on the shampoo, and pretty much just everywhere.

We had room service once and the food arrived 40 minutes later very soggy and not great, so probably best to just have lunch in the nearby restaurant!

Overall, we didn't spend much time in the bedroom so I would be happy to return to the resort again. It took us about 20 minutes in the taxi (who always try to bargain for a fixed rate) from the airport to get there. In a metered taxi, it should cost about 160 pesos. We walked to a small shop across the road from the hotel to buy water, snacks and more sunblock as the hotel shop was very expensive.

Hope to go again soon!

We really enjoyed our visit to Blue Water. We had 2 young kids aged 2-4 and we had the grandest time. Our first night was the Primer Deluxe Room. It was a great room with an expansive bathroom. We were at room 101 and it was about 30 feet from the beach. The beach had very clear water and I was able to pick up a star fish and at one point was surrounded 180 degrees by a school of fish, my estimate was about one or two thousand tiny fish. There were also several larger fish, but they would only be in groups of 2-6. We took our family across to the private island owned by Blue Water and enjoyed the privacy of the island. The staff were very attentive and would bring us lounge chairs, blow our kids inflatables, take our photos and even make sure our kids were ok.

We spent the next 3 nights at the Amuma Spa Suites. The room was a bit older and could use a refresh. But, it was quite large and was right across a pool. I noticed that there were guests from several countries -- Americans, Russians, South koreans and Japanese. It appeared that most of the guests were there for leisure and there were several couples as well.

Breakfast was very good and offered a wide spread. The other meals we had at the hotel were also very good. I wish I had the themed dinner buffets. However, my kids were not up for it.

We used the golf cart several times to move about the compound and the boat to travel across the island... all for free!

The only area for improvement is that the rooms have no wifi. The older rooms could also use a refresh. However, the Premier Deluxe Room was very modern and much better than even the Shangri-la could offer.

Location was pretty good as well. For small children its a 5 minute cab ride to the Mactan Aquarium, where one can see a host of local fish, including Lion fish, angel fish, bat fish, Puffer fish, sharks, etc. Blue Water also has several ponds where they have their own clown fish, sharks, etc. The hotel is also about 20-30 mins from the airport so access is quite easy.

Room Tip: Request to use golf cart to move around!

The water in the bathroom is salty!!! My friend & I have to buy big bottles of distilled water to wash our face & brush our teeth! Also, for us to boil the water to make coffee & tea.
Then there were 2 millipedes found, 1 on the curtains, the other on the bathroom floor.
The place is exclusive as the security is pretty tight, however, there's lots of local family there during the weekends i stayed and make it so non exclusive...

Food was average and they cant make my coffee right. I ordered a Mocha and the first was very powdery, and i drank a sip and ordered a hot chocolate instead and it was a nightmare, diluted and it's like melted chocoloated with no milk at all... then they gave me complimentary coffee which was cold.

The only thing i enjoyed was the massage at Amuna Spa.

Accomodation is not worth what i paid for definitely! They seriously need to refurbish the place. The concept is nice, staff are friendly but some has no clue what we were talking about but still very helpful.

The Filipino themed rooms were very nice. Amenities were all good, except for their WiFi, in which I still need to go to the adjacent snack bar, which has a wide variety of deserts which I gave in to, in order to get the signal, which was no big deal though. The beach was beautiful and it was protected from waves. The breakfast buffet was good and it had a lot of choices but perhaps next time they should position the cheese selection beside the bread and not with the viands though. Staff was great. They deal each and every customer in a professional yet friendly manner.

Overall, an average resort that lacks atmosphere and needs refurbishment. Price is very high for what you get. The rates we book didnt include the tax and charges which turn out to be an additional 22%!

Location, nothing outside and you have to get a cab to cebu city.you can get a metered cab for 270 but drivers ask for extra 50. The hotel car is a rip off.

Breakfast selection was alright. There was a lot of choices which caters japanese and korean who are their main customer base. Allegro restaurant food is average and expensive. You can go out of the resort and look for the korean restaurant near the korean grocery which is nice.

It seems to lack atmosphere in the resort. It would be nice if there is music around.

Rooms are clean but need updating as it is looking very tired.

Beach was nice and you can order drinks through an intercom in the beachfront. The staff on the beach and restaurant were very pleasant.

Upon leaving the staff pissed me right off. They do not offer the service of calling cab for you since they have a hotel car. The car was very expensive so i called a cab myself from outside the resort and asked it to drive in. The security guards asked what room i am from and asked my drivers license yo be left. The staff didnt assist in putting my bags to the cab but asked for my room number for the second time. When the cab was leaving the gate they asked for my room number again and i snapped at the guy why he need my room number for the third time considering i have just entered the gate and wasnt out of his sight. I lost my temper in this occassion.

We stayed in the Maribago Bluewater for 10 days. Never been to Philippines before, so destination Cebu was chosen when being not based on previous experience. Cebu itself lacks of good sand beaches, so if you are interested of them when out of resort, you really should consider another destination, like Boracay or Palawan islands.
Mactan island itself for my opinion has beaches inside resorts´ area.

Maribago Bluewater is a hotel for purely resort-lover type of people. Service/price relation in my opinion was good. We payed something like 900 euros for 10 day stay breakfast included.

Location: Mactan island is a tourist trap itself. Overpriced for budget tourist, but if you are coming from so called wellbeing country, these prices might still feel quite low. On the streets If you are caucasian look like person, on the street you will be offered everything starting from massage (with "happy ending") to cheap handicraft wooden jewellery. I personally would consider this area to be pretty safe to move around by feet. Vendors sometimes might be disturbing, but usually they follow your strict NO answer. If you want to see more "city", you really should take taxi to Cebu (preferably, newer part of it).

When arriving to Mactan Intl Airport you are met by helpful taxi "pimps", getting to Maribago Bluewater takes something like 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. It is not reasonable to pay more than 300 pesos for taxi trip from the airport.

Managing at the front desk was efficient and fast. We were met by smiling personnel. Checking in was fast. We asked for a garden wing room and we were not disappointed because on my personal opinion "beachfront" rooms lack of privacy. Room was spacious, minibar was convenient, bathroom nice and clean. Air-conditioner was effective all the time we stayed in the hotel, though hotel could invest in the newer type of air-conditioners, because in the beginning it was really tricky to fall asleep at night because of noisy air-conditioning. We liked the breakfast, it also contained a lot of traditional japanese/korean food, so people not familiar with asian breakfast can get acquainted with it. Staff was efficient and lovely .

Beachfront area: we did not use it at all. Looks nice, has high/low tides twice a day, but personally i prefer natural ocean shore type of beachfronts. There is a small artificial-look like island in the front of the beach where you can go by boat or just swim for something like 70-100 meters from the main beach. Water felt somewhat dirty, so mainly we enjoyed the pool area. There are 3 pools insde the hotel. Water quality is good, but "poolboys" could pay more attention on their work - at least two times during the stay i found garden area pool being quite full of debris from the palms. Next morning luckily it was pretty clean of it.

Food: definitely much more expensive than in the Cebu city, but prices still do not bite if you are used to western European prices. Thematic evenings are interesting. If you are interested in fine dining outside the hotel, get a taxi and ask a taxi-driver to get you to the Foodtown in the Banilad area, Cebu (45-50 minutes trip), it is worth it ( do not pay more than 400 pesos for the trip).

Room service is really and friendly, in- room dining is fast and efficient.

Front desk offers a lot of trip around the island and to islands close to Cebu. I would recommend daytrip to Bohol.

Only minus during whole stay was the presence of a group of over-the-hill aged japanese ladies on the last two days of our stay in the hotel. Ladies behaviour was the uttermost disturbance for us - shouting, screaming and drinking alcohol at the pool area, banging the doors early morning and late evening. We called to the front desk service to get some improvement into the situation, unfortunatly nothing happened, so the last day of the stay was pretty much like a hell and i got my migraine.

In common, resort is worth to stay if you are about to relax and doing nothing else

room: the place is amazing! the view from our room was great, spacious and cool!

beach: beach front is not enticing. they made a small island making a pool of sea water. during low tide: (1)you can cross the water going to the island. (2)the sand is full of sea weeds (3) the boats block the view from your seaside room, so i really recommend the garden/pool side rooms. my wife and i are not really into swimming in the sea so we really didn't mind. they offer water activities so i guess they take you on a boat ride and bring you to deeper water.

pools: awesome! 3 pools to choose from

staff: very friendly and accommodating

food: they have themed dinners every night. during our stay, they had hawaiian fishing village. the food was great! they also had some entertainment to cap the night. take advantage of the buffet breakfast. trust me, you won't regret it ;)

I found the food in the resort expensive. For lunch and dinner, you may want to try Maribago Grill just outside the resort walls :)
