Submitting this rather late, but I suspect a place like the Peninsula does not change much in a year. We stayed here in March/April 2008, shortly after the hotel had reopened following that unfortunate bit about the coup in the lobby. Hoping to bring customers back, they were offering reduced rates – we paid $200 US per night for a very large room with sofa and chairs. Not exactly a suite, but the size of one. We stayed here at the beginning and end of a Philippines trip where most of the time was on other islands, and it was the perfect way to bracket a trip spent mostly in less plush accommodations. Security at the hotel entrance was very tight, as it is most places in Manila, but once inside any security presence was invisible. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. The lobby is stunning, the spa is wonderful and very inexpensive, and the pool area at night is one of the most beautiful hotel settings I have seen. The rooms are very comfortable, though perhaps less luxurious than you might expect from a Peninsula. The twin bed format seems tight if you are used to western style hotels, but the beds have top quality linens and are quite comfortable. Our tower room had an expansive view of the smoggy city, and came with plenty of water and a bowl of fresh fruit. We ate at the Spices restaurant, which was excellent, as were both breakfast and afternoon tea in the lobby. The staff, as you might expect, are extremely solicitous. It was odd then that it took several phone calls to the lobby, and two staff visits to our room, to obtain functional internet service. A small complaint though, and overall a wonderful place to stay.

It’s a nice hotel with best location….. Its best quality: Pleasant rooms with basket full fruits, helpful staff members, good food and big restaurant. I would suggest staying in this hotel when you are in Manila.

I stayed here during April 2008 for 2 weeks - If you're an American, staying here or the Makati Shangri-La are your only two options if you want things to U.S. standards, trust me! I worked in the Philippines as an expatriate for 6-months. The rooms here are all very modern, I even had an LCD TV. All rooms on the west wing were recently remodeled and the east wing was being completed while I was there. The food was outstanding; although, when I did order bacon on a sandwich they simply placed several stips of straight up fat, yuck! I had my hair cut there and lounged around by the pool, both were great! I used the hotel drivers to take me to work and back, no issues. The lobby is the place to be on the weekends, it is packed. This place is within walking distance to Greenbelt and Glorietta malls and it is VERY clean too! If you're an American going to Manila or Makati City, check out my website devoted to the American traveler, I give all the dirt at makaticitytravelinfo.com

Perhaps I had been too caught up with the images of their advertising campaign but my stay at The Peninsula was very mediocre.

I would select a hotel based on its perceived value or for its reputed service. The Peninsula Manila offered neither.

The room was extremely average and completely devoid of personality. Even the complimentary chocolates lacked any character.

The bathroom again was nothing exceptional nor was the bath inviting. In fact the shower stall didn't drain well and therefore had a low film of water on the floor through the day

The food was fairly average with very limited choice

But most disappointingly, the service was very lackluster and at times, almost amateurish. It took some time for the concierage to locate the car booked for my meeting. And it took almost forever to settle my bill

I personally feel that in this particular case, the hotel's reputation far exceeds the value it provides
