“Great value, comfortable orthopedic beds and pillows, nice sunny rooms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

This is a very solid 3 star hotel in the middle of the city, 2 minutes from Plaza de Armas and great value for money. I think your experience of this hotel will depend on price and room number (as both appear to vary). Similar to a previous reviewer, I also received the $20 per room last minute special (Expedia) for 4 nights over the Candelaria fiesta and then decided to stay yet another 2 nights for $35 per night (same room). I travelled with family and this is probably the best value for money that we had in the whole of Peru trip. We were in rooms 408 and 312. They are both at the front of the building overlooking the city. Both are spacious with good sized bathrooms, floor to ceiling tiling and piping hot water. There are plate glass windows overlooking the street which let lots of natural light into the room (so nice and warm) and also a little chair and table so that you can sit in this sunny alcove. The beds were orthopedic and the pillows new and so comfortable. The rooms also had flat screen TVs and cable. The staff were friendly and efficient and the breakfast for the price was wonderful. Scrambled eggs, fresh juice and fruit, bread rolls, tea, coffee etc. and the sunny dining room overlooks the city and lake. I have to say that if noise bothers you then you may want to stay in one of the back rooms (the street noise tended to die down at about 9pm so for me, our rooms were fine. I also viewed two of the rooms on the ground floor while passing and these seem to be dark, damp and cold with views of an internal light shaft and since there appears to be no price difference, floors 2-5 are much better value.

Room Tip: Stay above the ground floor (ground floor are dark and damp).

We chose this hotel after reading Trip Advisor reviews and it was exactly what we expected. Our room was a good size (the washroom was huge) with windows opening onto a large, interior air shaft so there was plenty of light and little noise. The flat-screen TV came with a large number of channels, including CNN-International in English. The internet connection was fast and reliable. We reserved the room for four nights but went to Amantani Island the 2nd night where my husband became ill. We returned to the hotel where everything in the room was exactly as we had left it, got a doctor through our local travel agent, who arrived within a half-hour. A rep from the agency was there in 10 minutes. A hotel security agent escorted both the agent and the doctor (on both visits) to the room. I went out for lunch and brought back chicken bullion for the invalid. It was twice as much as he could eat so later in the day I took the container up to the kitchen and they warmed it up in their microwave--no charge. Shortly thereafter a Canadian friend we had met came by for dinner and we did room service, which was promptly delivered and well-prepared. We had to have laundry done on our return from the island; I delivered it at 1:00 and it was back by 6:00. The charge is 10 soles per kilo for wash, dry, and fold.

The hotel is a block from the Plaza de Armas and a pedestrian street that leads off the Plaza to the right. There are several restaurants as well as many shops along this street so it is easy to find a place to eat. The hotel restaurant is on the 6th floor and serves a large, buffet breakfast. One morning we went up later than usual and all the scrambled eggs were gone. I asked for more eggs, expecting the pan to be refilled. Instead, 5 minutes later, 2 plates of freshly cooked eggs arrived at our table. One caution: the restaurant at night is cold so take a sweater or jacket with you--and don't sit next to the windows. Our room had an electric heater that worked well so we were always comfortable there.

Room Tip: The hotel is on a busy, one-way street a block from the Plaza de Armas. Therefore, a room not on th...

I have to preface this review with the fact that we are in Puno, and the options for a great hotel are limited in the centre of town for a decent price. We visited Punu during the Candellaria festival (first weekend). There were plenty of hotel rooms available but many were quite expensive. The Hacienda Punu was a steal at $20 a night (last minute deal) and from that perspective exceeded our expectations. We were on the 4th floor facing the inner courtyard and it was very quiet. The room was very clean, down filled duvet, great bed and pillows. Large bathroom with toiletries and hot water to your hearts content. A safe in the room which needed a bit of tending to but worked well eventually.
The breakfast buffet is quite good, probably better than most. The rooms are furnished very basically but there is a table and two chairs, a flatscreen TV with all the channels you could ever want.

The front desk staff try to be helpful, but seem a bit disorganized. I am sure if my Spanish was better, this would not be an issue.

If I was paying full price, I may not have given the hotel the same review, but I think for Punu, this is as posh as you will get for full price of $80-$100 in high season.

- Good location, in the city center and close to the Plaza de Armas.
- The room was ok. The furnishings are average. Spacious and clean. Cold inside the room. Fortunately, we had heater in the room, after one hour of using it became warm in the room.
- The breakfast was ok, typical for Per, and was served in the restaurant on the 6th floor with a view of the lake Titi Kaka.
- Only one elevator. It's really very small and slow. If you don't have any lagguage and want to go downstair, use the stairs.
- Hotel staff are polite and friendly, but should improve their english.
- Better to pay in cash. For using credit cards you have to pay more than usual in Europe or US.

In general I can recommend this hotel for one/two nights.

We booked this through Booking.com for US$40 a night. Our room was spacious with two double beds, table chairs, wardrobe and oil heater. There is also Direct TV in the room on a large flat screen - so perfect for post jungle lazying around. The bathroom was also spacious and the shower powerful and hot. As our room overlooked the road there was a little noise and it is quite near the plaza where weekend parades happened. There are black out curtains too.

The location is central. Service is very good although phone calls are in Spanish. We were woken by a phone call asking if we wanted breakfast at 8.40am!

The only negative was the breakfast - buffet and better quality than the hostels, but still bread, scrambled eggs, ham, yoghurt and 2 types of fruit - they did serve potato pieces in onion and pepper. If we were paying more this would be poor.

Also be careful when paying - the hotel doesn't charge for using credit cards but has a very generous exchange rate. To avoid this ask to pay in US dollars.

Room Tip: Room 314 has two double beds!

There are probably not a lot of choices in this city, but this hotel would not be one that I would recommend. The computers never worked and no one ever really knew what was wrong. The rooms are run down, paint peeling on the walls and very noisy. Not only do you have the noise from the street, but the hotel staff is constantly doing something that sounds like dragging furniture across the floor. Very little hot water. The only two good things I can say is the breakfast is good and the location.

Of all the places I have stayed in Peru this is by far the worst, it is so noisy - honestly it sounds like they are vacuuming or dragging things across the floor all night long. We asked the desk people for directions and they were never able to get it right. Their lack of knowledge about the local area was astounding. The breakfast is ok just be forewarned your eggs will crunch with all the shells in them. On a positive note it is clean and there seemed to be plenty of hot water.
