“For the right price, perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

I have to preface this review with the fact that we are in Puno, and the options for a great hotel are limited in the centre of town for a decent price. We visited Punu during the Candellaria festival (first weekend). There were plenty of hotel rooms available but many were quite expensive. The Hacienda Punu was a steal at $20 a night (last minute deal) and from that perspective exceeded our expectations. We were on the 4th floor facing the inner courtyard and it was very quiet. The room was very clean, down filled duvet, great bed and pillows. Large bathroom with toiletries and hot water to your hearts content. A safe in the room which needed a bit of tending to but worked well eventually.
The breakfast buffet is quite good, probably better than most. The rooms are furnished very basically but there is a table and two chairs, a flatscreen TV with all the channels you could ever want.

The front desk staff try to be helpful, but seem a bit disorganized. I am sure if my Spanish was better, this would not be an issue.

If I was paying full price, I may not have given the hotel the same review, but I think for Punu, this is as posh as you will get for full price of $80-$100 in high season.

- Good location, in the city center and close to the Plaza de Armas.
- The room was ok. The furnishings are average. Spacious and clean. Cold inside the room. Fortunately, we had heater in the room, after one hour of using it became warm in the room.
- The breakfast was ok, typical for Per, and was served in the restaurant on the 6th floor with a view of the lake Titi Kaka.
- Only one elevator. It's really very small and slow. If you don't have any lagguage and want to go downstair, use the stairs.
- Hotel staff are polite and friendly, but should improve their english.
- Better to pay in cash. For using credit cards you have to pay more than usual in Europe or US.

In general I can recommend this hotel for one/two nights.

We booked this through Booking.com for US$40 a night. Our room was spacious with two double beds, table chairs, wardrobe and oil heater. There is also Direct TV in the room on a large flat screen - so perfect for post jungle lazying around. The bathroom was also spacious and the shower powerful and hot. As our room overlooked the road there was a little noise and it is quite near the plaza where weekend parades happened. There are black out curtains too.

The location is central. Service is very good although phone calls are in Spanish. We were woken by a phone call asking if we wanted breakfast at 8.40am!

The only negative was the breakfast - buffet and better quality than the hostels, but still bread, scrambled eggs, ham, yoghurt and 2 types of fruit - they did serve potato pieces in onion and pepper. If we were paying more this would be poor.

Also be careful when paying - the hotel doesn't charge for using credit cards but has a very generous exchange rate. To avoid this ask to pay in US dollars.

Room Tip: Room 314 has two double beds!

There are probably not a lot of choices in this city, but this hotel would not be one that I would recommend. The computers never worked and no one ever really knew what was wrong. The rooms are run down, paint peeling on the walls and very noisy. Not only do you have the noise from the street, but the hotel staff is constantly doing something that sounds like dragging furniture across the floor. Very little hot water. The only two good things I can say is the breakfast is good and the location.

Of all the places I have stayed in Peru this is by far the worst, it is so noisy - honestly it sounds like they are vacuuming or dragging things across the floor all night long. We asked the desk people for directions and they were never able to get it right. Their lack of knowledge about the local area was astounding. The breakfast is ok just be forewarned your eggs will crunch with all the shells in them. On a positive note it is clean and there seemed to be plenty of hot water.

I am really surprised that this hotel received so many good reviews. This hotel is really basic. The rooms were freezing when we arrived and there is only a tiny space heater. We had to ask for more blankets to stay warm . It really was too cold to take a shower. The windows let lots of cold air seep in. The furnishings are very basic too. There is a lot of traffic and the street is really noisy. The best feature is the location. It didn't seem that safe to me, but maybe that's just Puno. I wouldn't stay there again.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room that faces the street. It is really noisy.

Arrived in Puno on the Andean Express and was glad to find a warm clean room close to the Plaza de Armas and eating places. The staff were friendly and helpful event though there was a bit of communication problem occasionly. The buffet breakfast was adequate and the fruit was very welcome. To get to the restaurant area, just leave the hotel, turn left and go a couple of blocks to the Plaza de Armas and turn left again. Unfotunately the pizza plague has hit here but there are enough other styles of cuisine, even a few local ones to choose from.
