I was here 11 years ago and it seemed a little more genuine as we visited a school and brought some supplies but now it is purely for the tourists. You can even stay the night if you want. Like any tourist spot people will show off their culture and dress up and this is no different. It is still cool to see. Best thing is to pick a responsible tourist company who pay their guides well. We did an additional trip to taquille island which seemed more genuine.
