Arrival: For best Taxi rates to Puno(regardless of which hotel you choose) walk OUT of the perimeter of Juliaca airport and negotiate with the cab drivers there. We paid 50Soles toTaypikala for two of us and Taypikala is quite far compared to other hotels (Juliaca-Puno about an hour; Puno-Taypikala hotel-15-20mins).Try to negotiate your return trip as well, but be ready to pay more.
The trip from the airport will easily go over 70-80mins so sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Check-in was very smooth-we booked a suit through a travel site and paid upon arrival-all the info was there and we spend less than 5mins down at the desk. The suite was nice compared to some other places We've stayed in Peru and it had a heater and wood burning fireplace. Nice view from the room-garden and the lake, and jidging by the layout most of the rooms had a view of part of the lake. Walk down to the shore of the lake was an easy few minutes downhill, walk back wasn't :). That's when you start feelng that you are over 3500meters above the sea level. There was a basket with coca leaves kept on the front desk as well as some Oxygen bottles.
Room was clean, though from the high humidity you could alway feel a smell of dampness. The bathroom had a jetted tub, which seemed clean, though we decided not to use it since I doubted proper sanitation of the Jacuzzi was done. There were few dents and scratches on the furniture, but overall we were happy with the state of the room.
The restaurant was very good, but pricey -dinner with some drinks went above 60USD which for Peru is too much. And with nothing else around you'll have limited options (unless you stock on groceries in Puno). To go to Puno and the Titicaca lake-just wait on the side of the main road and wave to the small buses ("combi") and you can reach Puno in about 20min for about 2-3Soles per person. (There is a supermarket close to the main square-check with the PNP (Police) patrols for directions).
There is a lot to see in the area, so plan well and have fun!
