“Best bang fo your buck”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

The Royal Decameron Hotel is the best bang when it comes to all-inclusives in Panama. Nothing out of the ordinary. Food is average, at best - like most all inclusive around the world. The service and facilities are okay. The one drawback is that depending on when you go, you may run into a packed resort - because of the day passes. However, you should be able to really enjoy the resort after 5 PM - after all the day guests are required to leave. Given the choice, I will always pick Decameron...

Room Tip: If it's your first time, dont stay in Villas....the shuttle service is not consistent enough...y...

I stayed at the Decameron in early Dec actually. It had rained the whole week so the weather made it bad, but we did the most we could.

Beach - pretty nice beach, but at certain times you had to watch for rocks _ depended on what area you were on and where the tide was.

Pools- Decent enough

Restaurants - Pretty much same typical smorgasbord at all all inc resorts / cold food and repetitious. Ala carts were pretty good although I was sick in bed for 24 hours after eating at one. Spent my day on the throne with a waste bucket! I had not been that sick for ever! I was booked for an excursion and they would not refund my money!. It was not an alcohol issue I know for sure! It helps if you can speak Spanish as lots of the employees did not speak English

Entertainment- Some of the shows were good and some were typical high school song and dance!

Bars - Seamed to be a decent amount of bars and the service was good!

Disco - Was flooded with locals and bar service was terrible so I avoided the place.

There is a long bus ride to the resort so be prepared for this! There are lots of stairs and ramps to climb! Watch out for the little vans as they fly around corners! A long resort with a lot of paths, so some areas to walk off you meals if your into a evening stroll!

First the good parts: The staff was courteous and efficient and did what they could to help us out. Our room was over the disco (starts at 23:00 ends at 03:00) so we asked to be moved and it was arranged with no fuss. Thank-you. The food is OK at best, breakfast is the best meal by far, lunch OK, dinner needs work. The rooms are OK, clean and functional. The beach is nice and relatively clean. The pools clean and well maintained. Families feel welcome.
Now for the not so good parts: This place is huge with what that implies. And they have silly rules like everyone needs to be out of the ocean by 18:00 - a rule which is ignored by all, the pools start to close at 17:30 etc.. Lighten up, the ocean beach is not yours to control and the pools should be open till at least sundown. We, your customers, are not here to accommodate your shift changes. And finally; no wifi except at outrageous rates. OK - getting unplugged is not such a bad thing but still - at a resort like this simply unacceptable.
We stayed at the Decamaron in El Salvador last year and it was great fun - see my review. I can't say the same about this one.
Would we come back - probably not. It was a good base for the family on our first trip to Panama, which by the way is worth visiting, but having a lay of the land - would find an alternative - something a smaller and quieter.

Room Tip: Stay in the 'teen' blocks. Both ends are noisy - especially the far end where the disco is.

BEACH:
The beaches in this area of Panama are much less than ideal. The water is rough and full of jellyfish; this is not a nice place to swim. However, the resort has many comfortable places to sit on the beach and seating was never a problem for us, so if you are content with not swimming in the ocean it should be fine.

ROOMS:
The rooms were not nice. Halfway through our stay one of the bathrooms began to smell like raw sewage, and they didn't come to fix it despite my call to the front desk.

FOOD:
The buffet food was quite bad, but that may have more to do with what Panamanians eat and less with the ability of the resort's cooks. They would serve many inappropriate and strange things from a North American perspective (like meatballs for breakfast).

GROUNDS:
The Royal Decameron has fantastic grounds and landscaping, which is its best attribute in my opinion.

ENTERTAINMENT:
The entertainment was relatively mediocre. It mainly consisted of audience participation activities such as karaoke.

TOURS:
The Royal Decameron is far away from Panama City (2 hours), and there were not many tours to go on. I suspect this has more to do with Panama itself and less with the resort.

okay just a quick review, back home after 2 weeks in decameron and would not return.Had higher expectations but went with an open mind.
Big negatives
- no free wifi anywhere ($16.00 us per 24hrs of wifi)not so bad to get away from the bs though
-$ have to pay for safe (think i payed $45 for 2 wks?) $
-No fridge in room! no cans of beer, pop :( (charge for fridge if u request)
-if u bring cdn cash you will get .65 u.s back at the reception. ( bring credit card or debit, or even trav cheques)
-long way from panama city 2-2.5 hrs
-beach is very murky, sand is nice in some spots but streaky black in others.
-woodys close by but unless your a backpacker( which ive done heaps of) you will not be impressed as it is a dive, another newer woodys being built and will be open soon but doesn't look appealing and my personal opinion i dont travel all that way to meet other canadians.
-too many quebecois and people from toronto....nuff said

pros
-hot hot hot in dec,jan but in the evenings dont expect it to cool down much it was 30c at 2am
-panamanian people were amazingly friendly in the city
-many columbians at the resort, no probs nice people in general
-interesting history and sightseeing around panama city.
-not many americans as panama has taken over the canal zone etc.
-beautiful property with amazing trees etc.
-difficult to find people who speak fluent english, why a pro? well learn some of the language and stop expecting the country you visit to learn yours.
ideal way to see panama? rent a taxi driver for the day, cheap and air con is a must
BEST OF LUCK!

Room Tip: beachfront only way to go

We had a great trip to this hotel. The staff were very helpful even with our lack of spanish, all you have to do is try . We stayed beachfront in building 11. Beautiful views , and close to most everything. As has been said by others there are lots of stairs and hills to climb if you need to get around the whole resort, but if you are in ok shape this should not be a problem. I am a picky eater and found I was able to eat at all the restaurants. the beach was great and the pools also the perfect temp. The shows they had were done in spanish but they did try to speak english to the crowd when interacting aswell as french. Of course there are always a few problems, but nothing that could not be rectified. You would be surprised how being nice instead of yelling and complaining works, and you people know who you are. I have noticed some people complaining about getting drinks or water at restaurants, never had this problem but we did leave a very small tip regularily, so our service was great. The motorized water activities at the marina were reasonable and very safe. All in all we would definately stay here again , and probably over xmas and newyears as we missed the newyears celebration.

Hello Friends. Just came back from this resort and it was our 4th trip to all inclusive in 2012.

We arrived to Panama on Dec 31st with Nolitours from Toronto along with large group of friends.
Transfer to hotel took an about 2 hours. Our bus arrived to Lobby 1 and here is the moment of truth, when you see the lobby you pretty much understand what you dealing with.
All of us got rooms close to the lobby at building 19. Right upon check in we faced issues like:
A/C didn't work, Room was disgusting and dirty and finally 2 towels for family of 4.
Next morning 7:30 i went to talk with Nolitours rep and demanded to fly us back immediately. Unfortunately they fly to Panama City only once a week and i was offered to fly back to Vancouver.
Anyway lady from Nolitours was very helpful and helped to move us to building 41 with newer rooms.
Food: We didn't eat much, because food is really bad, nothing like Mexico or other countries.
Entertainment: we didn't go for shows.
Overall: All of us (44 people) came to one conclusion, we strongly recommend to avoid this resort if you can.
This resort is not up to North American standards and most of travelers are from Central and Latin America.

Room Tip: If you must go and can not avoid it, try to get block 40 and up rooms are a bit better and newer.
