Good:

- Garden, Cable TV, Swimmingpool, quiet place

Bad:

- Single room shared bathroom 30 US without window, another single room - with window - 35 US: air condition was not working that well, people smoking in front of your window.

- Breakfast: i ordered first, after me was coming other 5 people, i was get it last, was waiting 45 minutes for 2 small toast and 1 scrambled egg and coffee.

SUMMARY: Good place for groups and young people, single rooms have similiar prices like a Hotel, near to the Bus Station.

Room Tip: How i told you, dont take single room there, shared rooms are okay!

There are "HOTEL people" and "HOSTEL people", however some folks dont know which one they are. Dont chose a hostel just to save money. Simon would have been happier in a hotel. The issues that Simon expressed shows that he would have been better suited in a hotel. Bambu hostel is exactly what we say it is, a hostel.

We have lots of great amenities such as a clean swimming pool with pool bar, AC, hot water, cable TV, WIFI, computers, ping pong, books, travel services, great outdoor modern communal kitchen, common areas to connect with other travelers. Most hotels in David do not offer many of these things including no wifi, no pool, no kitchen and perhaps most importantly no one to talk to.

To further illustrate my point, Lunas Castle, the biggest and most successful hostel in Panama has a 65% Trip Advisor rating because their name is soooo big that everyone wants to stay there, but again many people dont know that they are not "hostel people", so they leave disappointed. Its not the fault of the hostel. The hostel experience is not for everyone, but many choose it purely to save money.

If you require absolute quiet, absolute privacy, a perfect room with hotel like services, than you are a "hotel person". If you are easy going, laid back, enjoy meeting others, and have a "go with the flow" attitude, then you are a hostel person.

I would like to add that you would be hard pressed to find prices in David cheaper than Bambu Hostel, as most hotels are in the $40 to $50 range. Also, all of our rooms have windows except one room.

This place is a good option for your stop over in David, including if you just need somewhere to sleep for a night before pressing on. We stayed in a private room with shared bathroom for USD$28. Room was spartan but clean and spacious. Bathroom clean. Cable tv and good wifi included. Air con also included, which we needed as it was very hot. Has good communal areas and use of a kitchen.

Useful things to know are that there are two 24 hr supermarkets and various cheap restaurants about 10 mins walk from the hostel, which is handy. We ate a big dinner at a nearby Chinese restaurant called Jenny's for USD$5-6. The hostal offers a full breakfast for $3.50 but we didn't have it so can't comment on what it's like. A cab for two people to/from the bus station will cost USD$2.50-$3. The hostal will happily call one for you.

We've been in bambu during a quiet period (so we don't know how it is with the bar full just next to the room during week end or high season)! we had the dorm (bambu room) for us! it's a lovely place. People who work there are nice and helpfull. we tried another hostel in David as that one was full during the week end after our trek and we recommended bambu instead of...the other.

We stayed here for a couple of nights just whilst we were killing time before our friend arrives as we can explore with him - the pool and tv made this a great place to do that with us able to watch the World Cup and hang out in the pool!

Big kitchen is very nicely kept and well equipped- even able to eat the fresh avocados that fell from the massive trees over the pretty garden area!

Very friendly and helpful staff, cute house-restaurant across road, local shop just at end of street (centre of David is a bit of a walk especially in the heat!).

No hot water and the pillows (very thin) made it difficult for us to sleep both nights unfortunately. Also it was too far out to be able to walk to town easily (esp for a drink at night) - needed a taxi BUT there is a cool little bar by the pool.

Thanks for having us!
Nat & Andy

I had been staying at another hostel in town and just wasn't feeling it when I found this gem. The rooms and common areas are nice, the grounds are beautiful, the staff is so friendly. Great value as well! Really felt at home there. Will return next time I visit Panama.

Bambu hostel is a fantastic stopover if you are travelling through Panama. It is very easy to stay longer than originally planned, as we ended up doing. The outdoor kitchen and garden with a great swimming pool are an awesome place to chill out for a day or two and there is a variety of sleeping options to suit all different travellers.

The staff is great, especially the owner, Greg, who was happy to chat about anything from travel advice (he really knows his stuff) to Music. If there is something he can do to help you out, he will!

All of this for very reasonable prices for accommodation (from $11) and dollar beers at the tiki bar next to the pool!

I highly recommend breaking up your travels through Panama with a stay at Hostel Bambu!

WE ARE A BACKPACKERS' HOSTEL, NOT A HOTEL OR AN INN OR LODGE We just completed a large out door kitchen with ten burners and loads of counter space all you need to create a gourmet creation (or a backpackers bowl of pasta) in the comfort and beauty of our flowing garden and pool.. When you are done following all the other tourists to Boquete and Bocas; come spend some time in David. This is real Panama. You will be interacting with Panamanians rather than always being around other tourists. This is a chance to stay at a super cool hostel and explore a real Panamanian city. Dance all night long to Salsa, Merengue, Rock and Reggaeton.. Great restaurants and shopping; and David is cheap!!!! 1/2 The price of Costa Rica. How about a $1 beer in a bar? David is a safe and friendly city too. Get your Latino on in David! New Jungle House in Garden at Bambu Hostel see photo below, built on stilts from native wood and bambu walls with tin roof, sleeps 10 backpackers and overlooks the sparkling pool, only dorm of its kind in Panama! Lonely Planet Recommended International Backpackers Hostel with a Pool and Deluxe tropical gardens in David Panama. We welcome Backpackers and International Travelers from all corners of the world. David is fun! It has everything that a weary traveler could need to recharge the batteries, fine dining, casinos, movie theaters, inexpensive shopping, nightclubs and discos, festivals, and, within 45 minutes, awesome mountains, Caldera Hot Springs, Playa Barqueta and Costa Rica. Come stay with us at Bambu, relax in the garden, swing on a hammock with a cold beer at the Bambu pool bar, dip in the pool and watch the tropical birds flying in the backyard. We have very few rules here, just come with a good attitude and have fun, but just remember this: If you think that you are going to have it all for a low price, think again. When you choose to stay at a hostel you need to accept the unwritten (until now) agreement of hosteling. The agreement is that there is a trade off. The deal says that you will receive a awesome travelers' community with lots of amenities, in our case, a clean luxury swimming pool, wifi, gardens with hammocks, amazing outdoor kitchen, laundry service, travel services, computers with skype, phone calls, books, games, a pool side bar with $1 beer, excellent and cheap seafood meals, etc . What you might not get is 100% quietness, privacy and comfort. That is the trade off at most backpacker hostels. ... more   less
