I stayed here for two nights, as kind of an adventure.. what a location, right on the water, boats all around, and they gave me a corner room, but this place hasn't been upgraded since the 70's, and is near some of the worst ghettos of Colon, along the canal front running back from the hotel a few blocks south, so it really was an urban adventure, which made me think I was kind of in a mogadishu.. I remember that the entire front of the hotel, the ocean side, despite being a great place for a lovely seaside garden, was essentially paved over, like a post apocolyptic parking lot, and the pool was satisfying, but wasn't pretty by any means, and the service was kind of off, jsut a woman with a grill, who would forget what I ordered etc, and a bunch of local kids swimming in the pool.. It reminded me of the east coast of africa again and again, kind of a post colonial ruin, this nice old building, with a casino slapped on, and not an inch of work put into the back yard, but the front yard where you pulled in was actually meticulosly gardened, some guy I talekd to, again kind of a hold over of some colonial heydey (american in this case, after the french, hard to see americans as colonists, but essentially panama was ours..)... but this is not luxury, and the staff don't really know the intricacies of a top hotel or a corporate hotel, but sure enough you will sleep well by the water. I did wander I thinke ast along the coast ( directions are confusing in panama, because it kind of runs in an s that defies the whole pacific in the west atlantic on the east thing, and the canal actually runs counter to what you think the atlantic side is west of the outlet ont he pacific) but I went to the malecon/zocolo to the east, with like a big ship wshed up on this beach, and there was tons of life, people practicing drumming, fishing, lots of places to eat, but the few blcosk getting there left one wondering if they might make it or not.. also, around the corner from the hotel on the canal side, before the true ghettos, there was at least one old defensive battery I was able to jump over to and explore from the yard of the hotel...
