For what it is, I would give this hotel five stars, but with qualifications. Do allow me to explain. This is a 5 star hotel, not a resort. There is little to do, aside from swim, drink, eat, drink some more, and go to sleep. With that said, it is an amazing place. It's a large hotel complete with two dining areas, a resort style pool, soaring lobby, attentive, knowledgable staff, and great food. The rooms were excellent, a new standard in Panamanian Luxury Hotels. Many rooms are complete with a sitting area, all have a large, well appointed bathroom, gigantic king sized, luxurious beds, and cable tv, complete with soft core pornography for lonely business travelers, amorous couples and teenage boys alike. I was located on the first floor, which is the smoking floor. I didn't even realize this until I read the sign in my room. They do not smell of smoke and as a bonus, come with insence and a holder whch made my room smell sweetly. The bar is nice, it has a piano and some soft seating, oh and a projection screen tuned to hot soccer action, all the time. Their "cigar shop" is a joke. Three boxes of cubans, out of a humidor. That's it. Quite sub-par. All in all, the hotel is excellent, true luxury.
A side note: The Meliá is actually the former School of the Americas, a military training facility. It was a base so controversial that the President of Panama kicked it out of his country. It's interesting to investigate the history of the so called "School of Assasins". There's still a set piece of artillary out front as the last vestage of its past.
