“Nice Trail, Nothing Compared to the Waterfall Trail”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

If you have time, hike this trail first, then go to the waterfall one; otherwise you'll probably be disappointed). It's a decent trail with a couple charming bridges and a sheep farm along the way, nothing spectacular. We didn't see any quetzales along the paved dirt part (this is end of May and the close of their mating season) and only went about 30 min into the actual trail.
I hear a lot of people start the trail at midnight to see sunrise at the top of the volcano. Make sure you don't freeze to death at the top waiting 1.5 hours for the sun to rise.

“Quetzal trail, well named”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

One week ago, Within two hundred metres of the trail head, our guide heard a quetzal calling, and used his voice to call them in. Within minutes, we had the most amazing array of males, females and juveniles, totalling somewhere between ten and twelve in total. This was one of the most majestic birding moments I have ever been blessed to experience. The next morning we went back to the same place, and saw none. Such is the nature of birding. Had we not been in the right spot at the right time, we too might have said there's better birding somewhere else.

“Here is the cheapest way to get there without walking a lot on the road...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013 via mobile

go to the collectivo bus stop for "bajo mono" and ask the driver to take you past bajo mono up the hill a few K to Alto Chiquero Ranger Station!! It is well worth the extra dollar you pay to not have to walk 2 or 3 k straight uphill on a road. Also a great out and back from Boquete is to the "mirador los rocas" or stop just before the monster uphill stair case because the view isn't worth it.

“QUETZALS ARE SEASONAL”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

Quetzals move around seasonally, up or down the slope and sometimes they leave the area altogether. Your chances are increased by going early and going further up the trail (or doing it all the way from the Cerro Punta end to the Boquete end) and learning the calls (see Xeno-canto.org). Not as spectacular but just as interesting are the rather maniacal Three-wattled Bellbirds that have just started calling at the Boquete end. Ideally take your binoculars to see the males deafening the females (again, you can hear the call on Xeno-Canto). In response to Mike, the trail is not maintained. It fell completely to bits, has just been repaired at considerable expense, and will no doubt fall to bits all over again.

“No Quetzals”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

We started the hike from the upper end (Cerro Punta). It is a beautiful trail. But it is so dense, it is hard to view the birds. I felt that the book Lonely Planet, Panama gave poor advice on this. They said Quetzals were so common that they were even on the road. Other birders were equally disappointed and if you really want to see Quetzals, you are much better off in Costa Rica at the Savagre area.
