“Good stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

My sister and I shared a double room. The room was quite spacious and had its own bathroom. Victor was quite hopeful downstairs. He gave us some good hiking ideas and suggestions about the town. The price was very reasonable. I loved the pancake breakfast that we made each morning!

Room Tip: Get a double room if staying with another person.

Mamallena was fantastic. The staff was super friendly and helpful, even asked us to hang out and have drinks. The accommodations are really nice, free pancakes included, nice TV room, laundry facilities, and a sweet outside/backyard with a hammock.

What really made this hostel special was the staff. Victor was really helpful with suggestions and Jan was an awesome friend and driver. Mamallena made all the tours especially convenient, since they had a driver to take you places and/or the tour would pick you up directly from the hostel. Definitely recommend this hostel!

I just got home from a 3 day, 2 night stay and I highly recommend staying at Hostel Mamallena in Boquete. The owner Miguel and manager Victor were so nice and very knowledgeable about where to go and what to do. The tours offered by the hostel are organized and reasonably priced, especially the coffee farm tour with Mr. Tito. The hostel is very clean and attracts many travelers so it's a great place to meet people. It will fill up so do make reservations ahead of time.

These guys were great. They made the travel arrangements incredibly easy, were full of helpful suggestions once I got there, and were so friendly, it really made me want to stay longer. The hostel was clean, the staff knowledgeable, and the prices were more than reasonable. I really enjoyed the porches and hammocks where I could read my book, and I was always able to find a free computer to use the internet. I highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Hostels, in my experience, are not the kinds of places where you can count on quiet conditions anyti...

I spent two nights at Mamallena Boquete and was happy with my experience.

Accomodations: Basic but clean. Please note that prices in Lonely Planet are outdated. I paid $11 a night for a dorm room. The dorm only had one other bunk bed (mine was a single) so I was happy that I wasn't sharing a room lots of other people I didn't know. The bathrooms and showers reminded me of sleepaway camp> simple, functional and fine for getting the job done.
The main lobby is fun - lots of funny drawings on the walls from other travelers plus lots of travel information. Crowd is mixed. Lots of Europeans, Israelis and Americans/Canadians. Many people spoke enlgish which was huge for me because I dont speak Spanish very well. The kitchen is well equiped and the free breakfast is great!

People: I was suprised to find that this was not a "college only" crowd. There were married couples and a few people in their mid 50s in addition to the mostly 20s and 30s crowd. Overall, very relaxed and friendly crowd.

Staff. Knowlegeable and paitient enough to answer everyones questions all the time:) they all speak English, Spanish and usually one other language.

Location: Boquete is small. If you arrive by bus from David you will be let out onto a little square. The Hostel is right near the bus station in the square. There are definitely prettier places 1500 yards in either direcetion (river views one way...mountain the other) but I was happy with the location because it allows for lots of interaction with other travelers. If you want to stay somewhere romantic or seculded this probably isn't your place. Having said that, last night Spain won the Euro cup and even though the whole city basically shut down to watch the game and celebrated when Spain won, the "partying" was minimal...even though one of the two bars in the neighborhood is literally on the ajoining property. Not too noisy ..though not dead silent either.

Final review: Good, solid place with friendly, knowledegable staff and guests. Perfect if you want to meet other travlers, find people to do day hikes/trips with, are traveling alone or just want a fun central place to stay. I would stay here again (though I might spring for a private room next time).

PLEASE NOTE: A private room at Boquete mamallena is $27.00 NOT $33.00 as is written in LP as of of 7/2/12

Good luck and enjoy Boquete! It's beautiful!:)

Room Tip: Get a room towards the back of the hostel- less traffic at that bathroom. Also, first floor better t...

We stayed there for almost a week and felt very comfortable most of the time. Bring your earplugs since the rooms are not isolated very well and you can hear the conversation from next door. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the staff very nice and helpful. For brakfast they provide you with everything so that ypu csn make your own pancakes. The kitchen and tv-room are inviting to hang out and meet people. The hostel offers fun tours for very good prices, so don't bother booking them at another place because it won't be cheaper. We had a good time and would recomend it to young travellers.
