“Best Coffee Tour in the World”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

My family and I have enjoyed wonderful times at the Tinamou Cottages before, but last week on February 4th my sisters and I went on the Kotowa Coffee Tour that Hans leads. It was simply the most fantastic tour of any kind I've had. He combines an encyclopedic knowledge of the coffee industry, from how the workers pick and sort the beans to how coffee futures are traded on the international markets, with the wonderful ability to tell stories, hold your attention, and keep you wanting more. The tour takes you from the fields and the burlap laid out with the beans, to how they're graded, roasted, selected, ground and more. I had no idea about the relation of roasting choice to flavors, of the differences between robusta and arabica, and how to choose coffee in the future with confidence and knowledge. Hans is patient, funny, knowledgeable, and makes the whole experience pure fun.

Four of us travelling together had the opportunity to stay for two nights at this lovely lodge. We stayed in Great Tinamou cottage and it is fantastic. Hans and Terry are such gracious hosts, we immediately felt welcome. Each morning, we enjoyed coffee on the veranda overlooking the jungle. Birds, wildlife and the largest butterflies we have ever seen abound. The cottage is lovely, comfortable and the beds are great. We would absolutely recommend this place and if in Boquete again, we will definitely stay here.

Room Tip: Really enjoyed Great Tinamou cottage and there was plenty of room for 4 of us - two couples - to sha...

Our first trip to Panama and Boquete was greatly enhanced by our stay at Tinamou Cottages. We stayed in the Highland Tinamou and it was almost difficult to tear ourselves away and explore other areas. The cottage was clean, somewhat Spartan in a good way, and the perfect size for the two of us. Terry and Hans went out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay for us. On our last day, we had an unfortunate problem with our rental car, rendering it undriveable, and Hans literally rescued us! Great folks, great cottages, great breakfast each morning. We're still smiling!

Room Tip: Ideal for birders and coffee lovers, alike.

Our visit to Tinamou was wonderful. Hans picked us up in Almirante and gave us an exciting tour of Panama on our way to Boquete. Hans shared his knowledge of Panama in a funny and interesting manner. He included a stop at the Cocoa farm which was fun and educational. We took a 1/2 day hike with Hans which also included many interesting facts about the area and Indians who use the trail. We enjoyed the monkeys looking in our windows and peeking over the porch our first morning in Grand Tinamou. We also enjoyed the many other wildlife viewed from the balcony. We highly recommend a stay at Tinamou cottages!

We spent nearly a whole week at Tinamou Cottage this summer with our seven year old son ( he loved Spot the dog !!!) and had a wonderful time. The location and cottage were terrific, especially the view of the jungle, highlands and birds. The service was warm, attentive and very professional and the breakfast with fresh patries and home grown coffee everyday was delicious. We did 3 trips; a coffee trip with Hans, a birding trip with Terry and a car trip to Almirante through the cloud forest, the rain forest and ground zero were to climate zones merge and made an extra stop at a cacao plantation run by indians and recommend all of these trips highly !!! highly. Hans and Terry are wonderful and knowlegdeable hosts with lots of interesting stories on Panama !!!

I stayed with friends in the Grand Tinamou cottage. It was a very comfortable 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage with a wonderful patio over looking the jungle. We loved starting and ending the day on the patio, watching the hummingbirds, butterflies, and other jungle critters.

Each morning bread, coffee, and sweets were delivered to the cottage in a large basket. Terry always wrote down the name of the coffee and bread and where they came from. That allowed us to purchase a couple of bags of the varieties we liked!

Hans and Terry have created several well-marked trails through the property which were great fun for exploring and gave a good sense of the size of the property and the flora and fauna. We met a couple and their daughter from Germany the first day at Tinamou and hiked and ate with them a number of times.

The only 'shortcoming' was the shower which was a bit tiny for many people. Tall people will need to duck a bit.

Room Tip: Either of the lower cabins offer two bedrooms and wonderful balconies. I'd suggest a four-wheel...

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at Tinamou Cottages. We called Terry from town and she met us at the Kotowa Coffee House immediately. We had a rental so we followed her to home - about a 10 minute trip. We had a Suzuki Jimmy with 4WD which we did need. The road needs some serious help and this comes from folks who used to go four-wheeling for fun. But do not let this deter you. When you arrive, their house is on the right and the smallest cottage is to the left. There is no office which I expected. If you need anything, just ring the bell at the main house. Someone is always around.

We were greeted by Spot with his entire body wagging with excitement. We stayed at the Grand Tinamou which is along a trail past the Highland cottage. The trail is just that, a trail in the woods but it is easily walked. They provide a flashlight for walking in the evening. Just don't forget it if you leave earlier in the day with plans to come home after dinner.

The cottage was gorgeous and the view incredible. There is no one around but Mother Nature. The bed was very comfortable and waking to birds and other critters was so enjoyable. The furnishings were all very nicely done. We bought food from the grocery store one night and cooked a great meal at "home". There is no oven or microwave but it was still very easily done on the stove. You could see the love Hans and Terry put into their cottages and surrounding property. We spent many hours on the deck enjoying the hummingbirds. At one time there were six of them fighting over the feeder hanging at the edge of the deck.

We also enjoyed the trails on the grounds. We did not see any wildlife but it was all around us. You could hear it everywhere.

I was worried that the pastries I had heard so much about would not be filling enough but there was no need to worry. They were all extremely tasty and filling.

My advise, even if you are not a coffee snob, is to take Han's coffee tour early in your stay. It was one of the highlights of our trip (along with the lodging). We surely would have enjoyed the daily coffee even more than we did had we taken his tour on our first day.

Hans and Terry were excellent hosts who truely love what they do...it's obvious. I know you two will be reading this, so thank you again for your kind hospitality.

Room Tip: The Grand Tinamou is large and very comfortable. For a couple I'm sure we could have easily had...
