“Will be excellent when finished, watch out for hidden charges...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2014

Rotana is a new resort in Salalah, Oman. As of June 2014 when we stayed it was still very much a work in progress with many of the buildings still under construction and the major restaurants yet to open. That said the room was by far the nicest room we have stayed at in Salalah and instantly makes the local Hilton and Crowne Plaza resorts look cramped and outdated by comparison. The pool is also the largest and nicest pool in Salalah. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and helpful. The buffet restaurant, Saffron, was above average but we would have loved the opportunity to try more variety and hopefully the Beach restaurant and fine dining restaurant, Silk Road will be open when we next return. The lobby coffee shop is good too and well worth a visit. When Rotana is completed and fully operational it will be the most beautiful and modern restart in all of Salalah.

+ Stunning resort on the beach. Beautiful grounds, canals, and pool.
+ Large, modern, well decorated rooms.
+ Service is first rate

- Location is great for relaxing but is 20 minutes outside of Salalah so plan to rent a car.
- Resort is still under construction and many shops and restaurants and services are not yet open
- Bizarre mini-bar policy and hidden charges can add stress to what should be a relaxing time

Issues? We did have a few issues during this stay. We booked a "Summer Special" and were told upon check in this included 20% off resort wide, complimentary breakfast buffet, and complimentary mini-bar.

Breakfast: We were initially charged for breakfast but the front desk made sure the charge was removed at checkout.

20% off: Some of this was automatic, others we had to ensure were deducted at checkout.

Mini-bar: When the bellman showed us the room he also pointed out the mini-bar, 6 cans of soft drinks and water and reaffirmed it was complimentary. We walked down to the beach and came back to the room to find the mini-bar empty with an instruction card to call for mini-bar service. The phone call proved fruitless so I visited the front desk where the employee discovered that this was the day the resort was changing their mini-bar policy. Fair enough, restock the min-bar and I'm happy to pay for any items we consume but that would not be the case. The mini-bar would only be stocked if we paid for ALL the items, even those we did not consume. Outrageous! Of course I refused. Then the mini-bar staff accused us of drinking 2 diet soft drinks, of which we had consumed none. In the end we paid for nothing because we received nothing. This new mini-bar policy is very bad and only drives guests to bring in outside food and drink instead of paying for what they consume from the mini-bar.

Beer, wine, & spirits: The resort features a large menu for drinks but sadly none of his was available when we were there. They did have 2 varieties of bottled beer and a red and white wine by the glass which was enjoyable.

Room Tip: Beware "oceanfront" rooms only mean ocean view. You may be 2-4 buildings back from the bea...

We decided to stay here simply because of the previous reviews on Tripadvisor and because currently Salalah is 32 degrees whilst Muscat is basking in 47 degrees of heat. Yes, there are the niggles of a hotel operating under a 'soft' opening with doors not opening properly, no candles at dinner, no food at the poolside but all of these are so minor in comparison to the sumptuous rooms, beautiful swimming-pool and fabulous beach that awaits intrepid travellers prepared to go the extra mile (kilometre?) to get down to Salalah itself.

One important point to note that is that duty free is not allowed in Salalah if there is a transit through Muscat onto domestic airlines and all alcohol is banned and will be confiscated if caught. The staff at Muscat duty free will not sell you drinks the moment they become aware that you are bound for Salalah. On the subject of alcohol, the hotel now has its licence but only for certain areas at certain times but it shows that the government will need to wake up to this tricky point if it really wants to promote good tourism.

The staff were fabulous, despite the small amount of training in such a new hotel, and any niggles, once discussed with management, were acted upon immediately. For those of us from the UK, we were not only in a fraction of a proportion to those from Germany and France, but we did not have their 'all-inclusive' package which meant that certain things expected free in a hotel were absent (snacks, fruit in rooms etc) because it would cost too much. To be fair, management is aware of this and hopes to change it so that everyone is on an equal footing once the hotel is busier.

Previous comparisons here between the Juweirah and Rotana hotels are accurate and now that there is no construction work going on, all is very peaceful, but the beach at the Rotana is what crowns this hotel as the one of the best you could ever ask for.

The food? Faultless. We ate at the seafood restaurant beside the Juweirah as well as at the Rotana and can only say that it will be very hard for any visitor not to stay here without adding on a few pounds (grams!)

The design of the hotel, the lagoon around the buildings (reminded us of Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai) and the Arabesque architect will attract those tired of the monstrosities in Dubai. The whole place is a reminder of how Dubai used to be in the Eighties when it was still proud of its heritage and it had a charm long since lost in the shadows of skyscrapers. Salalah Beach is the future of tourism in Oman - it's developer (who also owns El Gouna in Egypt) - knows how to do a proper job without skimping and his attention to detail is excellent.

You cannot go wrong by booking a stay here and whilst it is an extra haul down to Salalah from Muscat, with a 25 minute ride from the airport, it is really worth the extra effort.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room.

I stayed here for business, wished I had more free time. A brand new resort, breaking new ground at Salalah Beach, soon to become a must-visit area.

I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, the rooms to be extremely spacious, well designed and very well equipped. Despite being brand new, everything in my room worked exceptionally well - no teething problems. the pool area is huge and the beach looked great.

The resort will be better served by restaurants in the near future, I was told at the pool bar. We ate at the next door Juweirah Hotel and the food and service was great. I must say that my breakfast was excellent in the Rotana - hopefully a sign of things to come

Once everything is up and running, this will be a great destination - hope to visit again soon!

Stayed here for a weekend as we've always wanted to see this part of the world. The hotel location is lovely the facilities are great. Only gripe was that not all restaurants were open and we werent told in advance. Also the maps of salalah had run out and we were told they'd be ready the next day. Unsurprisingly they werent. All minor issues though to a great hotel.

We visited the resort just a couple of weeks after their opening to public. The hotel is quite large, rooms are scattered around water channels and the beach area. I personally prefer the ones facing the beach as you will have a direct view to the sea.
Food is great, staff is well prepared what is rare in Oman. Pool area needs more shading as the large pool surrounding areas can be quite torrid during summer. Hotel premises are not quite secured by any wall so there's a chance you will have some locals during weekends jumping in just to see the views...a little bit annoying if you're on your bikini.
A negative note on the lack of alternatives for food next to the pool. I believe that it will be available in the future but not for the moment.
Generally it is a wonderful hotel in a place of the world that is still quite unspoiled by man.

Room Tip: Beach facing rooms are the best although a little bit far from dinning facilities.

A fantastic break, staff are very friendly always smiling and saying hello when they pass you, the pool and the beach is fantastic, the sea is absolutely amazing there. Although all restaurants were not open as the hotel is new, we ate in the main restaurant, the food was fantastic the taste and variety was great. I do not usually eat 3 courses but I did on this trip!. The rooms had nice design (love the color scheme) with everything that’s needed, beds comfortable, we had a room overlooking the sea beautiful view, and not far from the pool either which was nice. We had lunch in the lobby café and they were also very accommodating to our requests. I would defiantly return.

We spent one week in the 5 star Salalah Rotana Resort in order to have a relaxing stay because of our Wedding Anniversary. We are strongly impressed by the resort, the service and the highly motivated team.
Entering our room we got the first surprise - a lovely decoration and a delicious cake for our anniversary. Some days later we were invited for a special anniversary breakfast on a sunlight flooded area with a beautiful sight to the ocean - special thanks to Mr. Alaa, Mr. Geoffrey and Mr. Bal for this surprise and the great service.
We could not identify, that the resort had opened just a few weeks ago. Just the missing liquor license could cause some inconvenience, if this is important for the guests. The served food was really great and represented an interesting range of Arabian, European and other global specialties. The team in the Saffron Restaurant completed the positive impression, special thanks to Kanika, Sadaqa and Ralph for their great service!
