After some busy travelling of late we wanted somewhere to lie back and relax. The hotel delivered this in bucketfuls. On arrival at the airport and payment for the visa complete we walked outside for our transfer to the hotel. It is always with some trepidation at this point as normally these things are done via email - but I need not have worried. The driver was there waiting for us and after an hours drive, we arrived and were upgraded to an Executive room which was a great thing as we arrived at nearly 3am. We settled down to a very comfortable nights sleep in a great big bed. The room was large and the en suite had both shower and bath - great for us as he likes to soak and I like the shower. There was a lounge area with a dining table a small tea/coffee area and another toilet. Thank you Ayat - it was a lovely room and we had two views to choose from one pool side or the sea.
Breakfast was the usual buffet fare with eggs, pancakes etc made to order, the staff were very welcoming and knew we had just arrived the previous night. The coffee was good and if you get the offer of freshly squeezed juice - take it, it is better than the dispenser drinks. As per normal he slept in and I went alone, which is always the way. Gives me time to explore the dining options and what else is on offer in the hotel. The hotel has six places to eat; an international buffet, an arabic restaurant, a english pub, a pool bar, a piano/lobby bar and a seafood restaurant, of course there is room service.
What to do with the rest of the day? We went for a walk along the beach and found the spa, booked a treatment for us both then lay by the pool until it was time... Ah the pool, forgot to mention it is supposedly the biggest in Oman and because the hotel was so quiet we had it to ourselves! It was weird everything was quiet, it made it feel like our own personal hotel with just us and about 200 members of staff to cater to our every need. Although it got busier during our trip, we never lost the feeling of having the special treatment, nothing was too much trouble.
The Spa treatments are carried out by Balinese nationals and although limited in choice for some people, they have all those you might want whilst you are on holiday. The quality of the massage was fantastic, one of the best I have had in a long time - in fact even 5 days later the niggling back issue I had has not returned, an added bonus from the holiday.
We started our first night at the pool bar were they told us about opening and happy hours. Cocktails were freshly prepared and tasted great - makes you feel good to have a fruit portion with your alcohol :-) Veg and cheese were served with the drink which again was a nice change and again helped you feel as though you were being healthy.
As our first night was also our anniversary celebration, we thought we would splash out and go to the seafood restaurant. The food was good and the portions were large - I mean where else would you order lobster and get two!!! Delicious and sweet with lemon butter on the side mmmm and his Goan fish curry was so flavourful. If there was anything I would suggest they improve the batter on the calamari but otherwise the food was well prepared and served hot. Happy with our efforts to eat the food we returned to our room and opened the door to discover the hotel had known about our anniversary via a friend! In the room we had a bottle of wine, cake, towel animals, flowers and a card. What great friends we have and the hotel did them proud. When we called reception to thank them, they told us they thought it was on the Friday so they must have been running around crazily - but it didn't show.
The following morning everyone asked if we enjoyed our evening and of course, how could we not have. Our next days followed a similar routine and we really recharged the batteries. We ate at all the various restaurants and enjoyed what we had, the nachos we the only thing that were disappointing as they had american squeezy cheese instead of real cheddar but again only a niggle and not the end of the world.
We decided to go out and about on the free trip to the Souq in Salalah. The bus leaves around 3.30pm and returns from the souq at 8.45 pm arriving back around 10pm. This is a long time to wander around a souq looking at frankincense. There was plenty of clothes and perfumes to look at but no jewellery or spices - would have been good to go to a this souq also as we personally found we had too much time there. We could have gotten a taxi back but did not know how to let the driver know we had returned. If you want to go be prepared for a wait to return but there are food venues around if you want.
The penultimate day Ayat managed to find us a taxi driver who spoke English and off we set to see the sites. It is amazing how different it is one one side of the road you have camels and sand dunes and on the other side you have the mountains starting to turn green because of the incoming monsoon weather. Our driver was great and took us around all the highlights of the area and was interesting and well worth the money.
All in all we really enjoyed staying at the hotel and would recommend it as time away from everything (as phone signals are limited) and recharge the batteries. Would we go again, YES most definitely and look forward to seeing it when the Khareef is past and the whole area green.
Thank you to Ayat, Hussein and your teams - we had a great time.
