“Worth the drive from Muscat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2014

I was on a short 3 day visit to Oman for the first time. I was visiting family and they recommended the short drive to Nizwa. As an American, the drive was indeed short and quick (1.5 hrs). As other reviews have stated, the drive is very picturesque and it gives a brief and quick idea of some of Oman's many diverse inner areas.

I felt the fort and museum gave a good history and it was interesting to get a feel for the importance of these inner towns. The panorama from the top of the fort is wonderful. It was interesting to hear from my family (who've resided in Oman for 12 yrs) how much Nizwa has grown in the last several years. There is construction going on all over the city.

The very small museum shop had some nice pieces of authentic Omani goods - especially jewelry, that supports the heritage of Oman.

I plan on returning with my family some day. Loved Oman and its people.

“Bad timing!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

We got there late morning on a Friday and they closed at lunchtime! We were allowed in, but did not really have long enough to see all we wanted to see.

“must see in Nizwa and good as part of a tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

The defensive buildings including the impressive Fort round tower with its zig zagging staircase with those pitfalls (I always wondered about that name ) was originally built for the Imam and presumably his followers and students with added accommodation over the years . According to the notice at entrance the fort was built in the middle of the 17th century AD and took 12 years to build. The actual surrounding castle was built by an Imam near the old mosque and renewed by Imam Nasser bin Murshid al Ya'rubi in 1624 AD. It contained public and private tooms for the use of the Imam and his family, guests, guards and other retainers. And there is a library for scholars with of course special rooms for prayer plus all the other rooms used for storage of dates etc and cooking. Plus the coffee making rooms. An interesting short tour and outside looking over the walls at the rear you can view the original stone and mud walls which give an idea of the construction techniques of these Nizwa properties.
Maybe an hour or slightly less in total can cover the entire place including studying the exhibition rooms. A very modest adult fee for entry of 500 Baizas or half an Omani Rial.

“Well worth the detour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

May not be on your route, but if it is only a detour of an hour, well worth it.
Fort is in good condition. Climbing to big round defense tower (with its defense tricks) and looking out over the surroundings, makes you understand why the fort must have been a strategic asset.
The exhibit was not for me, although the timeline demonstrates the diferences between the development of the technology over the continents nicely.

“Must See in Nizwa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

This is one of the main attractions in Oman and definitely worth a visit. Drive from Muscat is quite scenic. Take the old road to Nizwa (not the new highway) through Barkat al Mouz - very pleasant.
Fort itself is integrated into old part of town (now totally renovated) with different souqs and Friday mosque nearby.
Inside there are many interesting and well detailed exhibits giving an overview of life in Oman. Rooms are decorated like other forts in Oman with weapons, pottery and traditional rugs etc.
Climb to tower is also fun and view from top is awesome - great for panorama pictures.
