“camping with comforts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

We stayed here for a night. We were able to set up a tent and enjoy the atmosphere which is very different from Abu Dhabi. The staff was very helpful and answered any question we had. There are limited facilities if you don't stay in lodging but I/we expected that. All in all the only complaint we all had were the other guests they were very loud and up until the early morning...so to enjoy outdoor quite we had to trek it someplace else. I would definitely recommend this place to people that want to get outside with comforts and to kind of feel like your roughing it, but if you want the peace you need some place else.

I have been twice, once in December and once during the summer. In both cases I stayed in an open air Arabic tent, with an open air bathroom at the back. Facilities then (2010) were very basic, but similar to other base camp type campgrounds. The main challenges were weather-related. In December, the temperature inside the tent was -5C. The water in our water bottles froze solid. In spite of sleeping in skiing clothes, this was probably the coldest night of my life. During the summer, the main challenge was mosquitos, which meant that I resorted to sleeping in the car. However, the wise would have brought a mosquito net, which I will surely do next time!

Overall though the experience was lovely, particularly if you are looking to get out of Dubai and see some nature. You wake up at the bottom of the hiking trail, about 200 metres from amazing mountain views. Breakfast was a solid start for the day, and the countryside was great.

Planned to stay two night but shortened to one due to below expectation facilities. Got a tent which I would not complain much but require lot of attention like open space bathroom. Enjoyed breaky and dinner, cook was awesome. Beware that there are no shops and bathroom, petrol pump facilities up thr in the mountains. Good to come with a plan and two days stay with trekking points and car with good enough power to drive steeps and rough roads.

First off: know what to expect, it is a base camp.

The amenities were clean, well maintained and we enjoyed our stay there. It was a great mid-point on our travel itinerary and amazing value for money. The management and staff were also friendly and provided really good service.

As soon as the renovations are complete, this facility will definitely deserve a 5/5.

The location for the hotel is challenging to get to, but worth the trip for dedicated hikers. The hotel lies near the rim of the Wadi An Nakhur, the "Grand Canyon of Arabia". Several hiking/trekking trails are nearby, including Oman's W4 trail to the south summit of Jabal Shams (elevation 2,997 meters), and the W6 trail to the abandoned village of As Sab. The hotel is near the end of the Jabal Shams road, approximately 38 kilometers from Al Hamra in Oman. The road is incredibly steep and winding, with few guardrails and no lights. The road is paved most of the way to the hotel, with approximately 7km of well-graded dirt road near the top. The road can be driven in a two-wheel drive car (which we did), but because of the steepness, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended.

The staff is kind, but speaks poor English. We found it easier to communicate via e-mail before arriving than once we had arrived. The staff can provide guests with breakfast and dinner, both of which we found to be tasty, with generous proportions.

The rooms were clean, but basic. There was a bed, a small wardrobe, and two small stools. The bathroom was functional but reeked of wherever the pipes emptied. Water only trickled from the shower head, and the small water heater necessitated at least half an hour between showers. The cost for the room was quite high, 50 Omani rials, which equates to US$130 for a room for one night, breakfast and dinner.
