“Old fashioned but well maintained place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

The Hansa hotel is located in the centre of Swakopmund, close to the beach and the main roads. The city is very small and there is not so much to do, but it is a nice place to relax for 1-2 days after some safari / desert trips.

The hotel is old fashioned, built around 1970 and the décor is typical seventies. There is no air-condition in all rooms, but it is relatively cool outside so this was OK (however I would expect they add air-con to all rooms). The rooms are relatively large and mine had a small balcony. The bathroom is also old fashioned but OK. Breakfast is very good, lunch as well.

Service is good as well, they are very fast and try to do their best. The General Manager is always around and oversees everything so service is efficient, but unfortunately he completely lacks of charm and does not even say hello to the guests – this is a pity as the hotel is charming and it well maintained.

Do not expect a luxury resort, but it is a nice 4-star hotel. Overall a good choice in Swakopmund, from my perspective most probably the best.

This I'd my preferred hotel in Swakopmund. It is a little aged, but service is great, the rooms are very roomy and exceptionally clean. The breakfast is perfect. To me the Hansa stands out for its true values and qualities. Try it. It's the best!

Room Tip: Ask for a non street facing room

It's not easy to find great food in Namibia, so after reading the reviews on tripadvisor for this place, we were looking forward to a wonderful dinner experience. However, we were deeply disappointed by the food combinations and quality. The Kudu carpaccio was buried in canned parmesan and served with odd varieties of salad and simply too much stuff and tastes on the plate. The main dish followed the same ritual, overcooked asparagus drenched in hollandaise sauce, mediocre fish more gravy, truffle, tomatoes and other stuff, too many different sauces!!!

We popped in here for a snacky lunch around midday. It was sunny, so we went through to the pleasant grass terrace area in the centre of the hotel. A single waiter was hanging around in the grand dining room as we walked through.

We were completely ignored for fifteen minutes. I went in to ask if we could order a light lunch. "You cant eat on the terrace, only in the dining room" was the surly reply. I asked why not (our table was five metres from the french windows to the dining room). You just cant.

This presents itself as a five star hotel. Not.

Room Tip: Dont try and eat on the terrace!

Recently I had the most enjoyable time of my life staying at the most fabulous hotel in Namibia,if not the world, the Hansa in Swakopmund. The Hansa is peaceful and warm, the staff very friendly and hard working.Your first glimse of the Hansa is of porters dressed in green with caps to match, then to reception where you are greeted by helpful and cheerful souls. The restaurant is magnificent 5 star under the care of 2 culinary masters Sven and Mark. The waiters and waitresses glow as they place sumptuous delights before you. After dinner you then head to the cosy bar tended by the king of bars Josepha. The management ,headed by Mr Wakker, maintain a very very high standard by their loving stewardship. Now to the owner, Mr Lang,if I may be permitted, his story is one of love for his fellow man which was demonstrated when on learning that his long time former catering chief had taken gravely ill, Mr Lang ,without a moments hesitation, said from now on you stay at the Hansa, where you can be taken care of as you had taken care of me.
This is a great man and his love is reflected throughout the Hansa Hotel.
Thankyou very much indeed for allowing me to stay with you, it was an honour and above all, a priviledge.
Yours most sincerley
Richard Carter(Actor Mad Max)
