“German 'gemudlichkeit' in Namibia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Villa Wiese has a very distinct look and feel when entering this skihut minded place. I felt comfortable from the first moment on. Good dorms and all the required facilities including FREE wireless internet. And what about the FREE breakfast which is not just dry bread but you even have a choice between eggs, cereal or fruit! If you need anything the staff will help you as much as they can.

I wouldn't look any further if you are in Swakopmund.

Villa Wiese is a backpacker's lodge in Swakopmund, and frequented by the overland trucks.

That should explain what kind of a place it is.

One thing that always puzzles the hell out of me is when people confuse a backpacker with a normal B&B or guesthouse or hotel, or even a self catering unit?

An en suite room in a backpacker's place is just that.. its in a backpacker's place !! Its also not a self catering unit. Sure backpackers are supposed to self cater in a communal kitchen, however generally these are not as good as in a proper self catering unit.

So if you are with family, and like to self cater ... please do not book into a backpackers place, book into the Swakopmund municipal self catering bungalows !

It seems many people are struggling with the concept of what a Backpacker's is supposed to be! This is a busy place.

To stay here you have to be young at heart, enjoy people about you, noisiness and so on.

Its rough and tumble.

So we were 3 travellers on a camping trip, and needed a break from the camping ... so we stayed in a dorm.

The dorm had 5 or 6 beds, but we had it to ourselves ... we arrived after 5 pm without a booking. They put us in the open dorm. After dinner in town we were pleasantly surprised to still have the dorm only for ourselves. Luck of the draw.

What we liked :

1. Breakfast - bacon, eggs, toast, coffee all included in the dorm price.
2. FREE wifi internet.

The dorm bathroom was too small for the number of beds...so you have to time your shower and so on. Fortunately we had the dorm to ourselves, so it wasn't an issue, but with 6 people in the dorm it could have been an issue.

Still, I had worse --- the dorm from hell in Windhoek reviewed elsewhere.

I was going to give this place a very good rating ... but the negative points are :

1. Bathrooms not really adequate for the number of beds.
2. Communal kitchen way below par - granted most people coming here have either been camping like ourselves or been on an over landing trip, and actually enjoy the chance to go out and have dinner in town somewhere. In our case it was "The Wreck" restaurant, reviewed elsewhere.

So as a backpacker it gets an average rating.

I do not see the following as negatives :

1. Tacky - that's what you expect of a backpacker's place - to be cheap and tacky. Bonus if its not the case. In this case- it is what it is.

2. Damp - Swakopmund is a foggy, damp town - expect it.

3. Wind and sand. Its Namibia. Swakopmund is in the middle of the desert. hallloooooo

So if you are expecting any form of luxury, please do yourself a favor and book into one of the many more upmarket places in Swakopmund.

If you are "old", and have issues with noise and liveliness , do not stay here.

If you are a family traveling with your small children.... stay the hell away.

This is the place for people that do not mind roughing it a bit and like fun IE. your typical backpacker.

It is your average backpackers place, but with a really nice cooked breakfast.

Nomad Adventure Tours stays 2 nights in Villa Wiese - a bit of a break from the 20 days camping trip - which was a welcome relief. We decided to pay extra so we could get a double ensuite room for a little privacy and luxury!!

The rooms were clean and basic, a little like a motel room really. I'm unsure what the cost is for the room as this was included in our tour price but we did pay an additional R120 pp (R240 in total) approx AUD40 for this upgrade.

They had a nice seating area downstairs as well as a bar and seating area/tv room upstairs. Smoking seems to be permitted so this can be annoying to non-smokers.

I would not recommend this for couples travelling solo as I think group tours take over the hostel on a regular basis and these groups can be a little noisy. However, the location is good - approx 10 min walk to the centre of town. Supermarket, bottle shop, are 100m down the road.

Rooms were quiet at night, although we were a little concerned as our room faced the outside street and no bars on the windows but there was no need to worry. There are people securing the front door but on one occasion we returned and couldn't get in - we actually snuck in a back gate, through a fence (which wasn't locked) and through a doorway which appeared to be the cleaning staff area - so I guess security isn't great if we could sneak in!!!

Breakfast was included in our package and it was very good. There were two options - a cooked breakfast which included two eggs, some bacon and some toast, butter and jam and tea or coffee, or a continental breakfast which included muesli, yoghurt and fresh fruit salad -toast, tea/coffee too - very delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We stayed here in double rooms (with ensuite) for two nights in early July 2011, and a further two nights at the end of July. If we hadn't prebooked the latter two nights and stood to pay a cancellation fee, we would have looked harder for somewhere else to stay for the second two nights.

The biggest problem is that they do not have nearly enough hot water for the number of beds / rooms. After camping with either no showers, or only cold outdoor showers for 4 weeks in winter, we were really looking forward to a hot shower. The first evening we arrived, and again the following morning (admittedly we were not up until 8am), the water was cold. The second evening it was also cold. I think if you shower early in the morning, or during the afternoon, you can probably get hot water. But don't count on it.

The rooms were a bit old and tired looking but quite adequate. Ours were nice and sunny with a north facing window. They were clean on our arrival. Following a sandstorm, despite having the windows and curtains closed, everything was coated in sand - it was a few mm deep on the window ledge and directly below it. However I think this is something you have to accept in Swakopmund!

Some of the staff were not very friendly or helpful. After leaving our car keys with reception, as requested, so they could move our car if required (they do not have a very large car park), we were woken at 7am by Knock knock knock, "you need to move your car". We explained that reception had the keys. "But we have no drivers today." A polite apology and a "please" would have gone a long way. One of the reception staff was particularly unhelpful, and was unable to even try to help us find a place to do our laundry, or the location of an internet cafe. However some of the staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful.

The kitchen was poorly equipped for self catering. We had intended to do this but ended up eating out every night as there was a severe lack of pots/pans/utensils/knives etc. Fortunately there are many good cheap places to eat out in Swakop.

Breakfast was good. The cooked option included two eggs, two pieces of bacon and three half-slilces of white or brown toast, butter and spreads, and tea or coffee. We found the breakfast service to be very efficient and quite friendly, and only once had to wait a few minutes for a table to be free.

The location is fine, it is about 10 min walk from the centre of town. There is a supermarket and mall 100m down the road, and a casino and cinema about 200m in the other direction. However our rooms were quiet at night.

I would certainly search for an alternative backpackers if I was returning to Swakopmund, but if cold showers and lack of cooking facilities aren't an issue for you, then Villa Wiese would be fine.

Definitely NOT a good place for families or couples to stay - it was continually over-run by enormous tour groups who dominated the place. Our usually reliable guidebook had raved about it, so we booked for 4 nights - but actually left after 3 despite having to pay for the extra night (they wouldn't give us a refund). We had planned to cook our own food in the evenings but there was no saucepan, frying pan, or even cutlery for us to use (the tour groups bring their own) so we ended up having to eat out all the time anyway, which undercut the cheapness of Villa W. Our room was insecure (ground floor level, rickety windows looking onto the street) the beds were damp and cold even for Swakopmund, and one morning we had to wait an hour before we could get breakfast due to the stream of tour-group members. Do yourself a favour and give it a miss.

I stayed here for two nights in July in a triple room. The room was very basic but neat and clean. The rates were extremely low, making this great value for money. Breakfast was included in the price and fairly good fare, though the service is extremely slow. Also, there aren't enough tables in the dining area, so you need to queue for breakfast. I thought it would be very noisy when I first got there and heard the creaking, but I slept well enough at nights. Location isn't a big deal because Swakop is so tiny - about 5-7 minutes from the city centre by car.
