“A chic, quite riad in the heart of the busy, bustling Medina”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2010

I was worried when I booked this place about some of the negative reviews, but I decided there were only a few, and so ignored them and booked. I was glad I did. This is a small 5 room riad, just off one of the main streets in the Medina. It is down a scruffy poorly lit alley, but if that worries you then the medina isn't for you, and we never felt unsafe - just locals going about their business.

The decor of the hotel is art deco, not at all traditional moroccan - lots of pictures of Edward & Mrs Simpson in the thirties. It is quite luxurious. There is a lovely roof terrace. We quite liked it as a quirky change from traditional riads. Our stay was quiet, but it seemed like the restaurant was closed for Ramadan. You feel very central, with all the medina hussle around you

Breakfasts were great, decor was luxurious and staff were friendly, though not always that efficient. Beds are large and really comfortable. Beach is probably 10 minutes on foot, and because it's the medina you have to park remotely (the medina is pedestrian only). Has free wi-fi

Lighting in the rooms needed to be better, the hotel is not air conditioned and some of the rooms are small - thought the lounge area is lovely and easy to relax in. If you book it, ask to avoid the room on the same level as the lounge, which could be noisy. It also has those hand-held french showers, which are pretty useless.

Overall, this hotel really was part of a very enjoyable stay in Essaouria, which is a lovely relaxed town. We're glad we stayed in the Medina, but if it worries you, pick a hotel in the "ville nouvelle" down by the beach

My husband and I had such a great time at this riad, and it was all down to the wonderful staff. The amenities are top notch: Bang and Olufson stereos in the room, a selection of DVDs to watch, lovely rooftop terrace... But, really, the quality is all in the service - friendly and personable and we were never lacking for anything. And the food is delicious!

We stayed here for 2 nights during the wettest freaky rain that they had ever experienced in this lovely relaxing little harbour town. it was lovley! Everything was perfect - cosy, eccentric, atmospheric and the bathroom is luxurious by any standards, the roof terrace is great too. We were given Maria Callas, although we had booked a cheaper room, at the same price. But the most pleasing of all was the wonderful service - they showed such pleasure in being able to make our stay comfortable and homely. definitely will return for longer next time.

Very stylish riad. We had the Dali room which was beautiful with lovely bathroom.
The staff were fantastic-Khalid, Rachid and Habib. Nothing too much trouble and very friendly.Even breakfast on the roof terrace was special. Excellent position within the walls,a minute from the shops and five minutes from the port and beach. Can't speak highly enough of this magical place.

a stunning riad, with fantastic staff....would probably stay here again.

Except for the fact that our rooms and bathroom was right next to the communal lounge and dining area...which mean showering and using the bathroom..wasnt exactly private.

And late night diners...we heard every word!

Breakfast on the rooftop is stunning
Hamman and massage were dissapointing as well

but overall a lovely riad...just dont get a room on the ground floor!
Also MUCH better then the lotus riad in marrakech

Stayed here 5 nights to unwind before embarking on our intense private tour around Morocco. Booked it as we thought it would be fun to experience at least one wacky riad and it was.

We had good email communication from the hotel sales manager, who confirmed our booking and arranged a late dinner for us on our first night.

We requested Fellini but, we were checked into (upgraded to) Maria Callas suite on our first night due to an error? The suite was wacky and had a fab bathroom but was very dark, narrow and claustrophobic. We asked to move to Fellini as soon as possible and it was literally done for us the next day while we were out! Very odd practice we thought!?!

Fellini situated on the 1st floor (same level as the lounge) was a better laid-out room with much higher ceilings than the other rooms. Unlike other rooms, it had external windows, so it had more natural light. I would say that was the best room in the house and we liked it a lot. (However, word of caution: this room faces the street and the riad is next to a school, so it can be a bit noisy in the morning. If noise bothers you, try a different room.)

Overall a very pleasant stay and we had a great time at this riad but out of the three riads we stayed in Morocco, this was our least favourite. We absolutely love Essaouira and will go back. However, we will not stay at Lotus O Marine again. We looked in Ville de I'o which was really lovely, so we will probably try there.

Good points:
Snazzy eclectic Art Deco décor & furnishings in the lounge and the rooms, especially liked the chandelier. Nice ambient lighting all around the riad.

Good for gadget addicts: iPod player (with collection of Claude Challe) in the lounge, B&O hi-fis and flat screen TVs in rooms.

Hints of luxury: nice marble bathrooms with lots of mirrors, luxury bath towels & bath robes and good toiletries.

Staff (especially evening staff) very friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much hassle.

Continental breakfast with a good selection of bread and pastries. Half board menu had a good choice and food was very good. Lady chef very charming and talented. Her Bouquet De Nemis (Lamb Vietnamese Spring Rolls) starter was really excellent. Restaurant was quiet most evenings we were there but had a nice ambience, playing cool Arabic lounge music. (They lent us CDs to play in our room.)

Good location in the centre of the medina. Easy walking distance to souks, port, beach etc...

Bad points:
Rooms were too hot. No air conditioning and there were not enough electric fans to go round all the rooms! We asked for one but they only managed to produce a small fan, which was actually really ineffective. Inadequate lighting in the rooms.

The terrace looked very tired and needed refreshing. The soft furnishings in the restaurant also needed a bit of attention. Very slow internet connection.

Drinks were expensive compared to other riads.

Overall operation in the hotel was not slick as it should be for a riad of this class. Other guests had issues with their bills. Manager (Julien) was still asleep at 10am on a Monday when he should have been around to sort out my queries with the bill at check-out. Reception staff not empowered to make decisions so I ended up having to spend 30 minutes sorting the problem out myself while our driver was waiting!!!! But, never mind - what a laugh!

*Tip: For live music and a lively atmosphere, try the terrace of Café Taro for drinks. It's just few minutes' walk away from the riad.

Just returned from Lotus O Marine, and had a wonderful time. The tranquil beautifuly decorated Riad just grows on you the longer you stay.
Service is impeccable, and waiters couldnt do enough for us.
Rooftop breakfast is lovely, had dinner twice in restaurant below which was very nice, and serve decent wine, and ventured out for our last night.
Even though in Medina, 5 minute walk to beach, port etc.
Had a really realxing time.
