“Friendly, eccentric riad”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

We initially thought the size might be too big (there are 10 rooms) but on entering our incredible suite, we were bowled over. The rooms are all individually decorated with wonderful artworks and there are very comfy beds. The owner, Jean-Gabriel, is an excellent host. It is like popping round to a friend's house, no airs or graces, no favours, just simple hospitality.
We stayed for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Essaouira is a friendly, bustling town and Riad Watier is set in a quiet part of the town. We enjoyed wonderful breakfasts on the rooftop patio watching waves crashing in the distance. The staff are, without exception, extremely professional, warm and friendly. We ate dinner on two nights and found the cooking to be very good (we would particularly recommend the absolutely delicious courgette starter)
This is definitely a place we would like to return to on our next visit to Morocco.

“Excellent service & location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

We stayed 2 nights following 3 nights in Marakesh & what a difference - exactly what was needed to calm ourselves down after the previous crazy city.
We had to take a taxi from Marakesh which was expensive after my wife became ill & we couldn't risk the bus. We then hired a man with a cart to take us to the riad for £3. Jean the owner met us & showed us to our room (Watier) and explained the background to the room itself, served us drinks & made some recommendations for us to go out to. It was a beautiful room & house & very clean & well located.
Having planned to eat out, we returned for dinner, although we hadn't booked & they made my wife a cheese sandwich which is all she wanted following her illness whilst I tucked into a 4 course meal - it was mainly French food with an Estonian soup - but very nice & filling. Everyone sits together at the same table & although I was on my own, I was integrated quickly into others' conversations, even though they were a mix of French & Estonion. In my circumstances, I would have been very bored on a table alone so welcomed this.
Breakfast was served on the roof terrace & was fine - eggs, crepes, cheese, bread, yoghurt etc
The 2nd evening we ate in a very nice fish restaurant "le Patio" as recommended by jean & it was very good. Jean then arranged a taxi for us to go to Agadir since the bus was fully booked.
I really dont understand some of the reviews posted previously & certainly do not agree with them. Jean is a very good host, and his staff were always willing to help.
The riad is well located within 5 mins walk of the battlement walls in one direction & the main street for shops & restaurants in the other.
WIFI does need some improvement however - but this is a very minor complaint!

“Lovely Riad”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012 via mobile

We spent 3 wonderful nights at this Riad in the Pere Jago suite that was ideal for the 3 of us - myself , wife and daughter. Jean-Gabriele was a helpful and congenial host. Nothing was too much bother for him and we enjoyed his conversations regarding his travels in Australia. We loved the art work, Moroccan, French and Indiginous Australian. The location was terrific and Jean-Gabriele's restaurant recommendations we're spot on.
All the staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast on the terrace was a real highlight.
Essaouira is a gem of a town with beautiful scenery and lovely people . The shopping is better than Marrakech and hassle free.
We highly recommend this Riad.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

We booked here after reading the reviews but I have to say that we found the Riad Watier disappointing. It is very well centrally-located in the Medina - and just off the main street enough to provide a bit of peace and quiet. We were met by Jean the owner who was very welcoming - and very helpful in orientating us and telling us where to go.

However, we found the Riad a bit too "quirky" for our liking. There is an air of cheap quest house about it. None of the furniture really matches and it looks like the communal areas are due for a refurb fairly soon. Our bedroom was very large (the Waitier Room) but it was let down by the mis-matched furniture and poor quality finish to things like bathroom fittings and curtains. It was also quite echoey - we could hear people walking across the tiled floor of the room above - and the toilet being used in the room next door.

The breakfast was basic at best - really not much better than a choice of breads. Wifi is only available on the ground floor and, at €170 Euro for 2 nights, it did not feel very good value for money either.

“A great little place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

We spent three nights at the Riad Watier and really enjoyed our stay. Jean was very helpful in recommending restaurants and a booking was arranged for us at a particularly popular one.

The accommodation was comfortable. The location was ideal and the breakfasts taken on the roof terrace were lovely - freshly squeezed orange juice, home made yoghurt, jams, croissants, bread, fruit, eggs - something to please everyone.

All in all we were made to feel very welcome.
