“Whole family loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Recently returned from seven wonderful days at Riad Baussala. Dominique and Leah have created an oasis of sybaritic calm just outside the delightful historic fishing port of Essaouira. From the moment we arrived we felt we had come home. The children had the "romantic" red room because it is a triple. We had the smaller room next door.

Mostly we just wanted to relax in the many cosy corners on offer. The only creatures in a hurry where the tortoises after the children organised a race!

Of course we went into Essaouira and bought leather, wood and scarves. We also went down the coast to walk along the beach and down a charming cascade followed by a pleasant light lunch overlooking the Atlantic at Da Nar (delightful host)

We ate a wonderful array of Moroccan food in the delightful firelit dining room every night - and most days enjoyed lunch by the pool, which, relying on the sun, was a bit parky for the adults but fine for the children who revelled in it.

We had a nightcap by the fire in our room most nights after looking at the starscape from the roof.

At the end of the most relaxing break we have had for ages nobody wanted to leave. A truly enjoyable and fulfilling week.

Our family of four stayed three nights at the Baoussala, and it wasn't enough. The accomodations and layout provide an aura of relaxed comfort - from the day-beds for sunning by the pool, to the quiet corners (inside and out) that are perfect for an evening glass of wine or breakfast. Dominique, Leah, Rachid and the other staff always greet you with a smile, and bend over backwards to make the guests' stay as enjoyable as possible. For example, the cook was able to whip up some crepes for the kids, despite that we were in between the lunch and dinner hours. We also had trouble with a rental car and Dominique kindly inserted herself into the process, dealing directly with the car provider to resolve the issue. The pool area is lovely - a particular hit with our daughters (10 and 13). We stayed in the 'dome-ceiling' room, which offered plenty of room and character, ample bathroom space and separate sleeping quarters for kids and parents. Everything about this Riad conveys an understated style and level of comfort.

We just had the most fantastic 6 days at Baoussala. Went with the kids (9 and 7). Rooms were fabulous - there was plenty of room for 4 of you with seperate area for kids to sleep. The riad was absolutely beautiful amazing layout. Beautiful courtyard and roof terrace. Amazing pool area with lots of seculed areas to avoid the wind. Staff were fantastic - we really felt at home. Couldnt fault it. We hired a car which we felt essential as we wanted to go and explore - there are tons of things to do with kids - we surfed, road camels off the beaten track, went quad biking on the dunes and explored Essaouria. Food was lovely but wasnt the cheapest around.

Room Tip: Marribou suit was incredible - outside of the courtyard area so a little quieter. We dicided it was...

We arrived at Riad Baoussala after a busy week in Marrakech. As we wended our way down the long unpaved road at the end of the 2hr drive from the city looking for our inn, I confess I had my doubts. Morocco had been a dream destination for my wife since childhood, and the frenetic pace of our time in and around Marrakech with excursions into the Atlas and to the edge of the Sahara had been thrilling but a bit touch-and-go. I worried that Baoussala would disappoint. As we came in through the front gate Dominique, one of the owners, greeted us with an offhand warmth that was quite disarming; and the gardens, walls and trees around us, with only the sound of the breeze, left us feeling that we could deeply unwind our cares and leave our busyness behind. Baoussala feels like home, as it is for Dominique. She designed the place and it looks like she merges traditional Morocco with other inspirations from the continent into a laid-back evocation of Africa in a world-travelers' den. The communal dining area is graced with Moroccan rugs, tadelakt floors, bookshelfs of paperbacks in 12 languages, and artwork of north and sub-Saharan Africa. We opted to take all our dinners here (not included in the room price, though breakfast is) since it was such an inviting place to which to return at the end of the day with the warm hospitality of the staff and pleasant conversation with the other guests. Our room was charming with its sitting area, hearth, reading room and bath shaped of glazed brick and clay with natural wood hatchwork ceilings. My wife, the designer and traveler with uncompromising standards, was deeply pleased with our setting, snapping pics of each detail and from every angle. We enjoyed returning to the room from dinner as the evening chill set in to find the fire lit and the room ready for reading, lounging and sleep. Baoussala is 10-15 min from the center of Essaouira, set in the hills that roll away from the Atlantic. We found access to town easy through arranged cabs or occasionally traveling in with staff on their errands. Essaouira is magical as well offering history, souks, hammam, and a less aggressive sales mentality than Marrakech. I surfed a few days we were there and the riad was nicely situated between town and some of the breaks. We left Baoussala wishing we had a few more days, but we left rested and with our heads and hearts cleared for the homeward journey from Morocco. This is a wonderful place to stay.

What an amazing place! After a long journey and arriving late we felt like we had woken up in paradise the following morning. Breakfast can be taken in the courtyard, roof terrace or even in your room. Service is prompt and beautifully polite. Leah and Dominique make sure that they come and chat and make you feel welcome (but never in an overbearing way). The attention to detail is a credit to them both. Well done guys and we hope to see you next year!

Wauw!! We just returned from a 17 days trip in Morocco, where the first 6 days was spend in the just so wonderfull Baoussala, 9 km outside the charming coasttown of Essaouria.
Boussala is the kind of place were you feel immediately at home. The place is beautifully and very personally decorated, subtle luxury with a magnificent sense for details. We enjoyed the cosy corners around at the hotel, the relaxed lunch by the very appetizing pool. We enjoyed our comforting breakfasts in the different outside areas as well as our very well cooked and reasonable priced dinners in the beautifull dining/ living room, evenings we will remember for a long time! We were a party of 2 families, each travelling with 2 boys aged 9 and 13. And the boys also had a wonderful time, especially the young ones enjoyed the nature around the place. We all felt very much at home and has already planned our next stay in this very unique place. It so good to know that this kind of hide away actually exists out there.... Puk, Denmark.

Room Tip: The MArabout cottage lies on it own, has 2 wonderfull bedrooms, quite nights out in nature, just ser...

It's in the middle of nowhere and can only be reached by car; but you end up in one of those (few) places in this world where your "soul" may come to rest, where life is simple and beautifull.
We (a family of 4) stayed in the Marabout cottage; the girls had an Emperor's bed (larger then a King) and we had our own private bedroom and a roaring fire (in the open fire place) every night.
The 500 sq. foot cottage is in all respects very cosy and light plus the style and details are very attractive. The large swimming pool is next door, as is the Hammam.
The whole ambiance is very congenial and relaxed - one can use the kitchen in the main house -
have breakfast (excellent) served where one desires and enjoy dinner in what ever setting.
All together an unusual place in an unusual setting with an unusual possitive approach!
