“Villa Maroc /unique/chic/not an ordinary hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013 via mobile

I have many happy memories of the Villa Maroc. My recent experiences include the newly created tower suite with incredible views of Essaouira, port, ocean and mountain view offering a salon ,lovely private bath and a wonderful bed high above Essaouira ,breakfast on the terrace with fresh, pancakes, omellettes, orange juice, coffee and hot chocolate and this by the way offers the best view in town, great home made dinner in a salon next to a warm fire. All for a great value when comparing the price to other run of the mill standard competitors. There are bad copies of the Villa Maroc but it stands alone as the ultimate experience in an old Moroccan house on several levels. Each guestroom is different.I have stayed in most of them. Some have seaviews, some have fireplaces, all have charm, elegance and decor. Five star service plus intimacy that reallyl doesn't exist in any of the name brand competitors which I've also experienced at a much higher price.

I have stayed in hotels in at least 15 countries and I am naming Villa Marco the worst for several reasons:

Floor Plan: This building is a warren of several awkwardly adjoined townhouses. The journey to our room was a series of narrow, steep, slippery and turning staircases to a room with many windows looking onto a public courtyard. The windows, including those in the bathroom, had only sheer white curtains for drapes so I am pretty sure everyone saw me naked.

Staff: I simply hate incompetence. Having to walk down (and up) 40 stairs three times to inquire about my when my bags would be delivered to the room never sits well with me.

Plumbing: Toilet paper cannot be flushed. Must go into the bag less trash can in the bathroom. Ick!

Bedding: The homemade platform beds were equipped with mattress so small I assume they came from cribs.

Amenities: No one expects a phone or a mini bar in a riad, but we did expect working outlets to charge our cameras and water glasses.

Smoke: The fireplace in the central courtyard is lit each night. Since our room was higher than the chimney, it was literally filled with smoke. How we survived asphyxiation is a mystery.

Breakfast: Breakfast was served in filthy, chipped, and cracked plates and cups. When we flat out refused to use unwashed bowls for coffee, the maid went the the cafe down the street to borrow coffee cups.

And the swimming pool they so proudly boast is 12 KM away at their other hotel. But you can pay them to take you there.

Thank you for visiting The Villa Maroc. We are sorry that you were unhappy.Villa Maroc, now a historic property,is the first of it's kind in Morocco. In order to preserve the integrity of specific Essaouira architecture (1879) four old warehouses were joined in a way that has won awards.1) We have no guest rooms facing a central courtyard.2) Our modern plumbing includes only toilets that flush toilet paper.3)Guest Rooms are all equipped with standard size European/American mattresses.4)Room 16's electrical system is in perfect working order.AC/DC converters available upon request.5)There is no fireplace in the central courtyard.6)All dishes are carefully washed by hand.We use French syle Coffee/chocolate bowls. We gave you a cup/saucer from our private collection. There is no cafe down the street. 7)The Villa Maroc has never claimed to have a swimming pool on site.Yes, we do have a beautiful 2nd property in the country completely separate from the Villa Maroc. Thank you,Meg. Cornelia & Abderrahim

I booked the Berber Room in the Villa Maroc for a group of fourteen people at the end of our week's stay in a nearby hotel. This small hotel has a series of rooms for hire off an attractive central courtyard. The Berber room was a long room with three tables and a fireplace at the end. The chairs and seats were upholstered with Moroccan kelim-style carpet and it was an attractive and intimate candle-lit place for dinner. The three course dinner (with a choice between three main courses) cost 180 MAD each (approximately £14) and was beautifully prepared and presented. It was a memorable treat from start to finish.

Villa Maroc is a wonderful place to stay if you want leisure, tranquility and good service. We stayed 3 nights ans would like to stay longer. Placed just in the south of the medina you have easy access to this and the wonderful beach south of Esaaourira. A rich breakfat was served at the roof. The owner, a Canadian, speaks French, English, and German fluently and cares about you. Certainly not the cheapest place in Essaourira, but probably the best. You must be able to climb steep staircases.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the top, they have the best view.

We spent 4 nights in Villa Maroc end of February. Our room was fairly simple (superior double room) but nice. If going there again we would probably book one of the rooms on the top floor. The inside of the hotel is very traditional and really nice. The food is also very good. They serve nice breakfasts on the roof terrace with a nice view of the sea and the beach.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the top floor with sea views or your own terrace

..The Villa Maroc has the best sea view in town...our favorite thing to do whenever we have guests in town is to have dinner in one of the old firelit salons or breakfast on the highest terrace of the Villa Maroc. Old world service, the freshest food and an ambience like no other continue to make the Villa Maroc the best address in Essaouira.
