Portuguese influence hundred years ago definitely give a "different" color and touch to Essaouira in comparison to other cities in Morocco. Although small in size, the local is able to keep it clean and interesting to visit, even the restroom was surprisingly clean for a public area.
I loved this part of Essaouira. Again lots going on but very very cobbled streets and a bit hilly so not good for infirm or those on sticks and I would imagine very bouncy if you are in a baby buggy! but so much fun I loved every minute of it and will be going back.
The ramparts have lots of history in them, now they are use by local artists as shops for local souvenirs, paintings, wood carvings and the likes.
Thank God this is part of the Unesco system as they have really gone to town to ensure that the ramparts are kept in good condition - after all - that;s why most people come - to experience the old charm. There are some lovely walks and good information here and there about the building.
It's an amazing experience to stand on the ramparts from the opening scene. It's a beautiful view of the ocean. A must see.
