Thank God this is part of the Unesco system as they have really gone to town to ensure that the ramparts are kept in good condition - after all - that;s why most people come - to experience the old charm. There are some lovely walks and good information here and there about the building.
It's an amazing experience to stand on the ramparts from the opening scene. It's a beautiful view of the ocean. A must see.
The ramparts of Essaouira, like most high points in a city, provide the best spot for photos of the medina, the ramparts around the medina, the blue fishing boats and the laid back community members going about their day's work; cutting fish, cooking fish, mending nets and so on. Close to the port there is a gate. Next to the gate is a door to the corner tower of the ramparts. It is well worth the 5 MAD to go up and soak in the view. In the medina itself, be sure to walk along the accessible portion of the wall and look out at the crashing waves and seagulls. It is free and also a lovely place to be at sunset.
Simply a must see if you're in essaouira! You can hardly avoid the ramparts, but they are worth more than just a casual glance! Great views!
We enjoyed both of the main ramparts. The weather would be hot and then cool, so I felt like I was layering the whole time. There are some lovely shots out over the ocean and rocks, and views back into town. It wasn't crowded at all. It is also a great place to go see the sun set.
