“An Awesome Coastal Town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

Jimi Hendrix lived here for a while back in the 70's, and to paraphrase his reasoning: "Because it is so freakin' cool!"

The ramparts form a lot of what is the sea wall and in many places the ocean just spends its days beating against them. It is one of the most picturesque places that I've visited and a place I'd visit again and again, for days or maybe weeks.

Being an active fishing port, the views and the rustic boats come with the smell, for no additional charge, but the persistent sea breezes keep the smell and the humidity nicely at bay and make this a destination worth adjusting your schedule for.

“Good Sea Views”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

The best thing about the ramparts are the sea views, when the big Atlantic rollers come crashing onto the jagged rocks there are some lovely sights, otherwise it all needs some TLC.

“Stand in the middle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2012

The ramparts have an acoustical design that allows the person standing in the middle of the circle to be clearly heard by those around the edge, great for a commander barking orders at his troops. Standing in the middle of the cobble-stone circle, say something and listen for the echo!

“Not St Malo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

GED Los Angeles compared the ramparts to St Malo - the Essaouria ramparts are nearly 300 years old and St Malo was rebuilt after WW2 - so I guess there will be some difference in condition between the two. Although is was a Frenchman that designed the fortifications for the local Sultan so there is some sort of a link.

“Beautiful views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

I went just before sunset and there was hardly a soul there -tourists and souvenir sellers had left (for dinner and Iftar)- just the seagulls. Beautiful views of the sea, the cliffs below, seagulls, the canons, old walls.
