“Amazing Food - Unique Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

Hidden in the back of the medina in Essaouira is the fish market - for locals (there's another one on the beach for tourists). This is the real deal - you buy your fresh fish from one of the local vendors, then take it across the patio to one of the open-air kitchens where they will prepare and cook your fish, and serve it with a fresh salad, water, fresh fries, etc. The fish was incredibly fresh and delicious - it's not fancy but it's amazingly good.

“Don't eat at the pier where you choose your fish and they cook it”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2014

Worst meal ever, was really looking forward to having a nice meal of fresh seafood near pier in Essaouira. We chose our seafood, and they gave us a horrible price. Wanted $50 alone for half pound lobster. So settled for not very much, 3 prawns, 3 sardines, one small fish, 3 prawn-ish creatures, and a crab. Negotiated ridiculous price. Got bottle of coke, burned dry fish in edible, charred and raw crab, in edible- claws dry, 3 ok not too burned sardines, 3 good prawns, and the other things were dry & in edible. Nothing else. $60 for no frills, a few bites of sardines, and 3 shrimp and coke. We were appalled. Had to go find a real meal. AVOID THIS PLACE. TOTAL RIPOFF.

“A fascinating experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

This can be found just off the main street of the Medina. You can buy fish from a stall. Next door was a communal eating area served by four independent hole-in-the-wall kitchens where they will cook and serve your fish for you plus chips, salad, water etc. Where you sit determines which kitchen will cook for you. Our cook was a motherly lady and the fish was delicious and so were the chips. We did this again next day. We sat at the same table and used the same kitchen where we had eaten the day before. The lady who ran it wasn’t there and our fish was cooked by a lad who looked about 14. I don’t know if it was his fault or if I ate some fish that was off but I was quite ill later that day.

“Best street food of my life”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

The Fish Market in Essaouiria is one of the best place to eat fish in Morocco. You choose the fish from the stall and the cook grill it for you. I chose tigerprawns, loabster, crab, St Pierre, sea urchins, all really delicious and definitely cheap if compared to restaurants. Go there if you like fresh and tasty fish and you will be happy and suffed with. If you are able to convince the fisherman, he will serve you also a nice and chilled clandestine rosé, disguised in a bottle of Fanta or Sprite. Unforgettable and much better than the boring, fat and sugary Moroccan cuisine

“Eat well, eat cheap, enjoy!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

If this is your first encounter with( Barbery) fish mongers you are in for a real treat. You are dealing with the decendens of the most feared corsairs of the middlle ages, their tongues are as sharp as old sabres. These Fish mongers are like octopus, once they get their suckers (paws) on you there is no escape. Come to the market early, hungry and with a plan of attack! Arrive at the market stalls through the centre, not from one end or t'other.. This sets the boys at one anothers throats and right in your face too -- In for a penny in for a pound, jump in & go for it!
Come early before the throngs come for lunch run the gauntlet of hawkers and check out whats on offer, The freshest of fish (100 metres from the boats) for a pittance. They will want to sell you lobster at 400+ diram/kilo, ignore them! Check out what looks freshest, nice sheen on fish with glassy eyes, crusteaceans live. NEGOTIATE/NEGOTIATE/NEGOTIATE - this is the real fun apart from the eating, dont forget these guys are pirate spawn & don't feel remorce, whatever deal you do rest assured they are making money on you, smile ! Once you make your choice and agreed a price have them set it aside & go have a long walk on the promenade or better on the fantastic beach. Walk to the end and back and guranteed you will have an appetite for that meal.
Early for the best price, hungry after your walk, a plan of attack to enjoy the entertainment.
Bon Appetite!
