We stayed at Dar Maya for only one night and a day and a half in Essaouira. From the time we booked our reservation to the time we left, we were treated like we were staying there for much much longer. It is a very chic place located in a perfect location in the medina with a surprise gorgeous ocean view and rooftop deck. Because we had a limited time, we asked that they arrange for several to do's that we wanted to participate in. They handled absolutely everything so we didn't need to do anything besides be ready at the departure times. A last second change in plans resulted in us asking if they could arrange a several hour tour of Essaouira and they arranged the best tour guide. Our time in Essaouira was both my husband and my best part of our 10 day of an amazing time in Morocco and Dar Maya helped that happen. I would absolutely recommend this Dar as the place to stay in Essaouira. Couldn't have been any better.

Room Tip: room outside of the top floor lounge right below the rooftop patio - feels like your own apartment.

We have just returned from a four night break in Essaouira, three nights of which were spent at Dar Maya. From the pre-booking stage, through to the stay itself, we felt so confident and happy with the information, help and advice given by Gareth, the owner. Gareth helped us with all the arrangements for our stay, right through to the Supratours coach tickets to Marrakech.

Dar Maya is an exquisitely designed Riad, based on the traditional concept of a riad but with a very modern execution and interior design style. It is simply beautiful and every detail is subject to the finest attention, from the décor to the gorgeous bathrooms. The roof top terrace has a plunge pool, recliners, comfy chairs and tables and a peek view of the atlantic. It's a great spot to take breakfast, or you can sit downstairs in the lounge/dining area. There is another lounge area just below the roof terrace which is great if you want to escape a blustery day and just chill out.

Gareth's team are great too and very helpful with tips, recommendations and help with anything at all.

Gareth was unable to accommodate all four nights at Dar Maya but made a suggestion that the one night he could not accommodate might be spent elsewhere, at Les Jardins de la Villa Maroc in the countryside. It wasn't ideal, but we went for that, as we wanted to stay at Dar Maya and that seemed the best idea. In the event, it was a superb recommendation and we had an amazing time at Les Jardins (which is also stunning and they have built a further lounge pool area with dining called 'Babel' - would also recommend very highly). I mention this simply because Gareth's Dar Maya is incredibly popular and often booked out, and if he makes this suggestion to you, it is worth thinking about and giving serious consideration because Les Jardins is like staying at your own personal villa with private pool facilities and it's only a short trip away. Don't miss out on a stay at Dar Maya if Gareth can't accommodate all your dates, and if you can combine the two, then would suggest is a very nice combo.

We stayed in two different bedroom suites and both were fabulous. The size of the rooms is a real plus and the bathrooms are lovely.

Enjoy... we did!

Room Tip: We loved the bathroom in the Tignna suite, but all are gorgeous

We had a beautiful experience staying in Dar Maya for four days in October, 2013. Dar Maya appeared as a place combining local architectural exotics with highly professional interior design and European comfort. You’re entering the building from a narrow romantic street (typical for old Medina) and find yourself submerged in welcoming and stylish ambience of newly decorated building. One of the most distinctive feature is surely a rooftop terrace with nice swimming pool, bar counter and a few tables used for breakfast (and for watching stars at night). The main thing – this terrace gives you a spectacular ocean view as well as Essaouira’s picturesque townscape.
The hotel’s owner Gareth offered us all possible hospitality. He is sincere and intelligent with his guests and his team is excellent too. They speak English and it’s helpful in the country where most of locals use only French. Our room called Laafit was spacious and nicely furnished, the bathroom properly designed and arranged. We enjoyed the cleanliness and style of each piece: bathtub, towels, bathrobes etc.
So we consider Dar Maya as a highly recommended place to stay and currently sharing this idea with all our friends. And possibly we’ll be back one day as we know thoroughly where to stay in Essaouira.

My boyfriend and I spent the last 3 days of an amazing 2 week vacation at Dar Maya. After an adventure filled trip through Morocco, we were ready for some tranquility and relaxation and that is exactly what we got. Dar Maya is in an ideal location within the city and within walking distance to the beach (amazing beach/sunset/sunrise views from the roof deck!). Gareth (the owner) did not overlook any detail in it's design. He was more than attentive (especially his two dogs Eddy and Nini who we loved!) and his staff was beyond kind and accommodating. We had to wake up to leave on the morning of our flight at 5am. Not only did someone get up to make us breakfast before our departure but they offered to pack is lunch as well. I could not think of a better way to end our trip to Morocco. We will absolutely return!

Un fortunatly we could only stay 1 night in this amazing Riad because we would have loved to stay longer!! Wonderfully decorated room with a very comfortable bed and the huge bathtub!! No need to leave the room but if you do, enjoy a nice glass of wine at the rooftop pool, or listen to Gareth's restaurant advices and go for a wonderful meal. We would recommend tjis to everybody and will hopefully come back ourselves for a longer stay!!

Upon arrival by the Medina at this Riad was the biggest surprise that from behind the front door. There, the English owner Gareth built a beautiful Riad. The Riad is beautifully decorated with attention to detail that is open only since April 2013.
The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated
At the roof terrace with swimming pool where breakfast is served is a nice place to be.
In the evening, burning scented candles and lights everywhere that make it very attractive. His right hand Abdul speaks good English and is very helpful.
Gareth the owner was an excellent host and gave us good tips for dining and lunch
This Riad was the topper in our journey of 18 days by Morocco
