“Oasis of peace and relax”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

I disagree with the most recent bad comments on this Hotel.
We spent there the last week of May 2015 and we had a great time.
We are talking about a 5L hotel but let's not forget we are in Marocco, I am sure a 5L hotel in Paris or London certainly has a more precise service and unpeccable staff, but after 3 days in Marrakesh the last week spent at the Sofitel in Essaouira was heaven.

We had a splendid and spacious room with a private garden and see view, at the same level of the external swimming pools. When we arrived they gave us another room, but it was very humid so we asked to changed and they changed us immediately in another one where we spent our week.

The golf is magnificent and we always found tee times available. Extremely well kept and with a lovely club house where we often had lunch in the garden, quiet and with a very nice view.

About the costs of the hotel I find pretty pointless the previous comments about much higher costs in the hotel rather than outside it: I mean, have you seen the average maroccan bar, spa, or shops? do you really expect to find the same services or products in the luxurious and clean envirotment of a 5L Hotel? Obviously things are more expensive if you get them there as every where else in the contrast between the luxury hotel and the poor reality around them where ever you go...

Really nice hotel, great for a break to recharge your batteries and disconnect with the daily business.

There is obviously room for improvements: sometimes they cleaned our room in the afternoon instead of doing it in the morning and sometimes they forgot to bring fresh towels....but nothing that a quick call to the reception could not fix without other delays. Treatments at the spa are too expensive for being in Marocco: if they would just reduce them a bit i am sure clients would use the spa much more.

The rooms and corridors ARE a little jaded, but really, really clean; probably a re-coating of the floors would completely alter that perception.
The reception, restaurants, pool and surroundings, and the general grounds and golf course were excellent and the management (very visible) and staff everywhere could not have been more pleasant, polite or helpful.
The food both at breakfast and dinner was excellent and varied and service again was excellent.

Room Tip: A room probably away from Pool bar and restaurant area would be best, 2nd or 3rd floor best for the...

First impressions are really good.
All the budget is spent on the lobby ,look beyond this and the cracks are showing.
My room was not ready in spite being a platinum member.
As you walk to your room you notice plates left in the corridor ,rubbish on roofs and a general lack of cleaning. For one week i have had to go past the same rubbish on the roof.
One has to wonder what the manager is actually doing!Does he or she actually do the rounds.
Every day I have had to ask for an additional towel , we are three and we get two towels every day. In spite of requesting the 3rd towel I get two towels. On one occasion they did not even bother bringing the towel.
The staff are pleasant and the bus to town are good.
The group should really market this hotel as a 4 star hotel.

Desperately in need of some R&R, my wife and I spent a week here in May, guided a since before by Fleetway Travel who delivered once again.

This hotel is hidden away in the south west of Morocco, hours from any major cities. The first impression is amazing; porters in traditional clothing, mint tea and macaroons on arrival and that reception atrium, wow! The pool is beautiful and leads out onto an immaculate golf course with the Coast in the distance. The rooms are big with tiled bath tub and an authentic feeling shower, the toiletries smell incredible btw. The spa is lovely as well.

Yes there are some signs of wear and tear, some cracks and marks on the floor, a patio door that had a broken handle etc. arguably the pool bar is a rip off as well. But what stuck with us is how hard the staff work to make your stay amazing; from the multitude that tend the grounds all day to the receptionists that answer any queries to the waiting staff who even remembered my birthday!

We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone without a particularly pretentious outlook looking for a luxury break in the sun. We hope to be back!

First time in Morocco for us, so we weren't sure what to expect. Just a 15 min bus ride from Essarioura airport to the hotel - great. We found the greeting upon arrival exceptionally friendly. Our room overlooked the fabulous gardens and golf course, with the Atlantic ocean behind - really nice. We were surprised by the size of the room and especially the size of the bed - it was enormous. The room was very clean and everything worked. The staff in general were extremely polite, friendly and efficient. A special mention goes to Noorh in the Kasbah restaurant and Rasheed (who ran the pool bar) as exceptional members of staff. We would definitely go back. Only down side for us was the windy conditions for three days but the hotel could do nothing about that!

Room Tip: Ask for a room separate from the main building

We have just returned, I share the views of all the previous comments but I must say that we had a lovely relaxing time.
We had a garden room overlooking the golf course.
Having the room serviced was very 'hit and miss'. Some days we had complimentary water and clean towels and other days we didn't .
Service was the same...sometimes very good other times really poor.
Rachid (waiter around the pool area) is excellent as was Norch in the Karbesh dining.
We tried to book a taxi to take us out to a vineyard (with the reception in the evening we sorted out a price) but got charge for an excursion on our bill.
If you want to go anywhere take the hotel bus into Mogador and get a blue taxi to wherever you want to visit, it will be 75 percent cheaper than the hotel.
Taxis from Mogador to hotel 25dh approx 5kmrd
We wanted to go 20kms to a vineyard hotel price 800dh.
Everything you purchase in the hotel is at least 5 times the amount, which would be fine if you got prompt service.
Again as others the mini bar has no price list we could find no prices but at the end of stay they ask if you have had anything from it.
We had eaten some nuts but these were not replaced during the whole of our stay...
Which is probably a good thing as they cost us 50dh each ....outside the hotel they are 8dh.
I think that with better policies in place this could be an excellent hotel .....at the moment it feels neglected with poor practices, poor communication and overall poor management.
The Al a carte restaurant is excellent, the food generally was very good.I would visit again but with lower expectations....it's just not refined enough for 5 stars.

Like a lot of people I had taken the time to read the reviews on Trip Advisor before booking and travelling to the 5* Sofitel hotel.

If anyone takes a few minutes to read back some of the older reviews you will see the same comments that I am about to make over and over, worse yet you will see the same replies from the hotel management thanking people for the constructive criticism and hopes that the customer will give the hotel a second chances on their visit to Essaouira.Sadly it appears that for all of the good (and as I later found out) very constructive criticism, the lovely words from management seem to be just lip service....as nothing appears to be changing.

For almost all of the issues I am about to list, many have been reported in previous reviews on this site and replied to by the hotel management and thus should not have been experienced by subsequent visitors given how utterly simple most of these are to resolve.

Upon arrival:-
Guests are held in the reception area and given hot towels and refreshments while waiting for a member of staff to check them in...and this is where the problems start. Firstly we were directly to take a seat and nothing was explained to us as to what was happening, we were seated for over 20 minutes before refreshments were provided.
Simple having the door staff explain to guests that they should take a seat and a member of staff will come to them to perform check in would alleviate much of the confusion. Also prompt supply of towels and refreshments would also help considerably.

Hotel room:-
The room itself was fairly nice to be fair, but for a few faults. Firstly a simple directly in each room to give you details like important phone numbers for the hotel, details on how to operate the lights and taps in the bath/shower (actually a little harder than you might think). Mini bar that is filled before guests arrive and is topped up regularly during the stay (over priced as most are, you would still expect to be able to use it at will....for instance at time of writing a can of coke was 35dh but outside a 1.5ltr bottle can be purchased for about 5dh). Drinking water should be provided and topped up daily, as should toiletries which had to be requested multiple times and worse yet toilet paper which would run out and not be replaced which is just not on for any hotel let alone a claimed 5*
Sofitel “My Bed” the much lorded feature in the rooms...as others have reported it is akin to a mountain between you and your partner, hardly romantic in any shape what so ever....the mattress has a comfortable topper that is clearly never shaken out and thus upon arrival has indentations of the many many guests that have slept on the bed before you....which only hammers home the feeling that it is a multiple occupancy bed. A simple shake each and every day by the house keeping team would remove this issue completely as I am sure it is done in other Sofitel hotels around the world.

Dinning:-
This is another area that is frankly so close to being done well, and let down by such simple simple things. For instance, on many occasions the staff would have to steal cutlery from any number of tables leaving them always chasing their tails and often there was just no cutlery for use at all of particular types. A simple fix? Purchase more cutlery.
Food quality was not bad, that said and has been mentioned a number of times sanitation issues from birds was a concern and thus we stayed with hot foods from the grill in the main. Another major bug bear for the duration of our stay, regardless of how many staff were in the restaurant (seemingly over staffed a lot of the time) it would still take 20-30 minutes to get tea with breakfast, frequently the wrong type of tea or even worse it was made with flavoured water of some description. Considering they were using an industrial type coffee machine giving them boiling water on tap it seems strange that such delays (sometimes the tea would not arrive until we were actually leaving having finished breakfast and given the lack of drinking water in the rooms was quite an issue).

General maintenance:-
The hotel (at time of writing) is said to be approximately four years old, but given the tardy appearance you would suspect it is much much older. Most of the walkways were cracked and large areas would be taped off for days forcing you to find your own diversion as no guidance was sign posted. After a few days to acclimatise to the layout of the hotel this was not a problem, but from day one it lead to a lot of confusion. Walls mostly needed repainting as was peeling and cracking in a lot of places, broken hammocks around the pool needed repair or removal, basically it presented quite a low image and was indicative of the hotel management mind set.

Transfers:-
The hotel arranged the transfers back to the airport for us, but we are glad we checked as they initially had us being picked up for a time some 10 hours after our flight, then when we checked again was booked for the actual time of our flight...simple mistakes and simple things to get right.
The shuttle bus into and out of the town was in fact fairly prompt and reliable and the drivers all courteous on every trip. It is worth noting that the return pick up point is in a slightly different location from the drop off point...something easy to miss.

Staff:-
This has to be the most positive aspect of the hotel, almost every member of staff was very pleasant and would try to assist you in any way possible even when it is clear that they were under resourced/under empowered, they never left you feeling that you were dealing with someone who was having a bad day.

Overall:-
I want to be fair and I have thought long and hard about writing this review, given that I did not complain to the manager while I was still in the hotel. I think the rationale for this decision comes from the fact that almost every complaint I had not only been made already and the management had responded, but a majority of the complaints are ones that should be very easy to resolve indeed. On this basis I am loath to recommend this hotel to anyone until there is a change of management or management style as I truly believe it is not an issue caused by the staff directly. To have the management comment to the complaints to many reviews on here and not take any action required for even the simple issues is frankly a slap in the face to the paying customers. The thing that is really sad about this is that fix the issues listed (which frankly are all very easy to resolve) and you would have a lovely hotel, with lovely views over the golf course and out to sea, filled with some fantastic staff and happy customers willing to spend more money in the hotel and recommend it to everyone they speak to, the reality of it currently however is sadly a distinct polar opposite to this.

A little sub comment about Essaouira itself is a lovely little fishing port with fort walls surrounding the medina housing many a shop or stall selling jewellery and trinkets, rugs or paintings and all the spices in the world. It would seem to be a sleepy version of Marrakesh, slightly less hustle and bustle, slightly less hard sell (most of the time). People happy to let you browse their wares, make you a cup of tea and share their life story in exchange if not for your currency then your own story. Their expression and gesture of a hand on their heart with the literal translation of “Peace be with you” could not be more at home then here in the post hippy era of Essaouira.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms not in the main building as you then get views of the golf course and not t...
