“Heaven and Hell”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2010

We booked this riad off the reviews at booking.com for one week. We were welcomed through the large gates into a beautiful little oasis by Sayeed, whom we found to have a sixth sense, he always knew when someone was arriving and would wait with the gates open well before guests reached it. Morrocan cookies and mint tea was served in the berber tent overlooking the small pool where we also took evening meals on a couple of occasions. The rooms are very good, all are a different coloured tadelakt moroccan plaster, there's two great salons to relax in and a great roof terrace, but with no loungers. This riad is beautiful, but as we found without a hire car is too far away from the main town, 8 kilometres and another 1 kilometre down an unmade rocky track, the taxis are quite expensive and we got bored after 5 days so decided to hire for the last 2. The locals are still collecting their water from the local stations by donkey and although we didn't encounter any resentment it does make one feel a little uncomfortable. The 3 staff at the riad are brilliant it's the owner that we had a problem with. We was asked after 2 days if we could pay for our stay in cash so as he could go shopping in marrakesh, we refused and then was told the card machine was broken. We asked every day if it was fixed so as we could pay and wouldn't be delayed on our last day as we were getting the bus back to marrakesh. Lo and behold it wasn't and we were taken from one friends business to another for him to try and get it working, he even tried his own cards so we know that it was definately the machine. Finally, after two hours they processed it manually and charged us 5% extra for their problem which was quite unnaceptable, but we had the bus to catch and missed final shopping in Essaouira. If you do stay here make sure you have cash and a hire car. There is a great restaurant at the top of the road called, 8 Kilometre, which looks nothing from the outside but great inside, not cheap but the food and service was really good and they serve alchohol.

“a mixed experience - but on balance positive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2010

This is a guest house almost in the middle of nowhere, down an unpaved and rutted road, that is not lit, and is horribly rubbish strewn. Certainly not to be recommended for nervous single travellers or anyone without transport. But an interesting location which provides a window on the realities of Morroccan rural life.
Staff Hadija & Said were great - welcoming and hospitable. Inside the walls of the Riad, the small, well kept garden and plunge pool are beautiful, and a berber tent provides shade [and, if you choose, somewhere to eat meals that can be provided to advance order.] It is well off the beaten track - make sure you take any snacks and drinks you might want with you. A tiny local shop does sell coke and choc bars near the water tap, but was not clear when it was / wasnt open. Km8 restaurant on the main road was very good [but not cheap.]
To Essouira by taxi is 150 MAD each way - which can add up for longer stays. There is no local bank or cash machine so if, like us, you are told the Riads card reader is broken and asked to pay in cash, you may need to make a trip to town and back to enable you to pay your bill.
