“Excellent riad, very friendly owners and staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in February 2013, arriving in a hire car direct from Marrakesh airport (about 3 hours) - the riad is very well located away from the hustle of the main retail areas, but just a few minutes walk to everything including the large square between the medina and the port. We had the 'suite' on the top floor, which was excellent, and enjoyed the adjacent roof terrace (available to all guests). The owners, who took it in turns 'mind the shop' are both lovely helpful people - with good English. Would highly recommend this if you are staying in Essauoria. And Essauoria was probably our favourite place that we visited during our week in Morocco, I'd want to stay longer than 2 nights on another occasion.

NB, parking was easy, just outside the medina (we were directed to park on the pavement, I think the cost was about 5DIR per day) - a porter was instantly on hand with a trolley for our luggage, and led us on the 10 minute walk to the riad; the riad have their own also, which we used on departure.

Definitely a good place to stay. Lovely staff, comfy room, perfect location, right in the medina and 5-10 mins from the port. Staff gave extremely helpful recommendations for our short stay.

Would highly recommend for a stay in Essaouira.

My husband and I stayed at Riad Malaika for 5 nights late January 2013. We hired a car from Marrakesh airport (journey was 2.5 hours) and parked up just outside the medina where a porter took our luggage and led us straight to the riad so there were no issues finding it.

The riad is set away from the hustle and bustle of the medina and is really beautiful inside with a warm seating area and a fireplace. We were immediately greeted by Sylvie, Piermark (the owners) and Abdullah.

We were sat in the waiting area, offered a lovely drink of mint tea, whilst Abdullah checked us in. He gave us a map of the medina (we would be so lost without it!) and asked us what we would like to see/do/eat. He recommended a few places to us such as restaurants, museums, massage/spa places which was so helpful.

There is always somebody on call if you need anything. We were upgraded to a larger room for free which was much appreciated. Our room was so beautiful. The riad has a lovely white terrace on the 3rd floor - a great place to relax in the sun away from the busy medina streets.

The bed was very comfortable and the facilities were great. Water bottles replenished every day, new towels, shower gel/shampoo and soap. We stayed in room 7 (Akenzar) on 2nd floor.

Breakfast changed day to day - more than adequate in quantity served with fresh orange juice and hot drink of your choice. Croissants one day, fruit and yogurt next, bread and crepe the next etc.

The only real complaints we have are that the interior of the riad was being painted every day which left a strong paint smell but this just shows that maintenance is constant to keep the great looks and quality of the riad. Also this is not a riad complaint but sleep gets interrupted quite early in the morning - which is only expected inside the walls of a medina and of any accommodation inside the riad. The canary which stays in the reception area is covered up overnight so that was fine but seagulls can get quite loud early in the morning (being near a port and seaside so not the riads fault) and a cockerel of some sort was rather loud on most mornings. Again - i believe this cockerel must have been in another building so not at fault of this riad. This is not an issue if you are an early riser - but not ideal if you want a long lay in for the morning.

The whole feel of the riad is quite intimate (no outward window in our room) so we made use of the lovely terrace a lot (being smokers too). This also meant i was a little conscious of my other half's snoring overnight for our neighboring guests!

I would most definitely recommend Riad Malaika for the service, location and beauty. I believe it is good value also and the staff are always more than happy to help with a smile.

If i were to stay in Essaouira again I would stay here again. Thank you to all at Riad Malaika!

Room Tip: Our room, no.7, on 2nd floor had good wifi reception and away from ground level noise.

We stayed at the Riad Malaika in December 2012 and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the City. The location was excellent and the staff most helpful , we would certainly stay there again on our next trip.

We had the time of our life at Riad Malaika. Everyone there was super friendly and supportive. This is truly a family place. Sylvie and Piermark made this Riad a life-changer for themselves, and the perfect place to stay in Essaouira for their guest. They treat their staff as if they what belong to a family, and this is how they treat their guests. The Ritz Carlton, one of the leading five star hotels in the world has a great mission: 'Ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen'. This could easily apply also to how you feel at Riad Malaika.

We stayed there for 8 nights over New Year and had a truly fab time. The owners and staff throw a party on New Year's eve and invited all guests to it as well. Moreover, Sylvie and Piermark even invited us to a private dinner and when we left came to the bus station to wave us goodby. Guess we never had such a lovely and personal experience in any place we stayed before – maybe the Puri Mas on Lombok/Indonesia ...

The Riad is beautifully furnished in every respect, has a fireplace at the ground level and a nice rooftop terrace. And they really try hard to keep it in mint condition, something that is not easy with the salty air in Essaouira. But you can see all the beauty on their website.

Will we ever return to Essaouira there is no doubt where we will stay!

Room Tip: The room next to the terrace on the top floor looked stunning but was already occupied ... No 7, our...

Thank you again to Sylvie and Pierre Marc for a great stay. We had an excellent time, sincerely appreciated the hospitality in the beautiful space you have created. Thanks also to you your team for good welcome, help with all our bags. It really makes a big difference to have the Riad owners
engaged and present in the daily experience. The attention to many small details was really appreciated. Our stay in Essaouira at Riad Malaika was one of the highlights of our time in Morocco. We would certainly come back and do enthusiastically recommend the "Malaika" !

My husband and I stayed for three nights in this excellent riad and had a fantastic time.
The hospitality was first rate; Abdullah welcomed us with mint tea and gave us time to catch our breath in the sitting area before taking us to our room. He was friendly, courteous and always helpful and made us feel very welcome.
Sylvia and Piermark (the owners) were also very friendly and lovely.
The room was gorgeous, the shower was hot (a big winner for me, I hate tepid showers showers!) and we had a heater in our room which was really thoughtful.
The breakfast was different every morning and was delicious - lots of food and freshly squeezed orange juice. All the ladies who served us breakfast were friendly and really nice.
The location of the riad is perfect! You're slap bang in the medina but on a side street so it's not so "in your face". A short walk to the end of the street and you're in the thick of it.
This riad is a peaceful haven...perfect! I can't recommend it enough!
