“Fantastic service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

We stayed at Le Meridien in November and having read recent reviews cannot believe they stayed at the same hotel! At the seamless check in we were given a drink and then taken to our room despite arriving several hours before the normal check in time.
We were staying at the Nirvana and the service at all times was first class, we were always greeted by name and our room number remembered even after a room upgrade!
It was our anniversary during our stay and we enjoyed an evening meal on the beach and also received a cake. The room service staff also prepared a lovely bubble bath with flowers and decorated our bed with swans and petals.
Prior to our departure we were concerned that the Shells restaurant was closed for refurbishment. We contacted the hotel but received no response. However during our stay we were treated to a fantastic special fish meal in the pagoda with our very own waiters! This was above and beyond anything we have ever experienced before.
We had some meals in the 180 buffet and did find the service less personal than at La Faya but there was plenty of choice.
We would recommend staying at the Nirvana on an all inclusive basis if you are a couple. From breakfast through lunch and dinner the service was always friendly but unobtrusive.

Room Tip: Nirvana Spa best for couples, no children Garden rooms had private outside space but beach rooms ha...

Apart from the check in, our stay at the hotel went very smoothly. Our room was good and comfortable, however we had to get house keeping to clean the floor of our room, but after that it was well serviced. The food was fine and the service genearlly good. The staff were very helpful. The drinks (even local beers) were very expensive, but one feels that most of Mauritius is out to make as much as they can from the tourists! We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it. I tore my hamstring water skiing and the hotel provided all the necessary assistance and the staff were very helpful.

The view from the room was great, but that was all that was great. We stayed over Christmas week, 2012 for 5 nights. The buffet breakfast was WAY overpriced at $46/person for simple eggs, bacon and sausage. The dinner choice is either to have a "reservation" (good luck with this) at Shells for a-la-carte choices (also expensive) or the buffet for $60/person. Upon arrival the AC in the room was broken. I called the service desk and they had it fixed within a few hours. The next day the door handle to the room came off, again, I called the service desk and they had it fixed within a few hours. I wouldn't expect problems like this from a 5-star hotel. Everyday the beach was crowded and the hotel didn't have enough chairs at either the pool or beach to accomodate the guests. The hotel has you sit down at tables in the lobby to check in...don't know about you, but after a 25 hour journey from the USA, I don't want to sit down and wait for anything - you just want to go to your room as quickly as possible and take a nap. The hotel's gift shop and restaurants are a rip-off...go to the local restaurants and you will get the same thing for less than 50% of the price. With that being said, you will need a rental car to get around to the local restaurants as the hotel is in a pretty remote location.

The website of Le Meridien is a claver one: everything is carefully photographed from all the right angles so it all looks MUCH better than the reality. It is tired and tatty - damp ridden bathrooms with peeling paint, discoloured and scrathced baths and chipped furniture. The floors of our suite were so dirty than, in walking from one end to the other, a pair of white socks were black! Towels that had been washed too much and were rough and threadbare and should have been thrown out long ago. The emphasis is on hotel rather than guest convenience: early morning arrivals from the UK are all left sitting in the lobby for 6 hours until rooms are ready, without so much as a complimentary glass of water! On arrival one is issued with a card which one can swap for a beach towel. If you lose the towel or the card, you pay c. £15. This results in an unseemly dash for towels and sunbeds and a jealous guarding of both by guests such that for most of the day, the too few and too tatty sun loungers are "claimed" by a towel that cannot be removed lest it cost the "owner" £15! Service was poor - every request met with a yes but then nothing ever happened - tennis lessons, room service, help with baggage, cab to airport, clean glasses, salt pot, drinks - nothing ever arrived on first request. We sat in one restaurant waiting for two of the four starters our party had ordered for 25 minutes. The bill took 40 minutes to arrive and was, of course, wrong. We even made an appointment with the manager one evening to complain and he didn't show up! Nor ever try and get into contact! Food generally pretty mediocre.

We spent a week at Le meridian. I found the hotel very neat and service was good, when I asked for extra pillows , they were delivered and the service desk called to follow up.
We booked a family room, which was sea facing with easy access to the beach.
We used the shower so we didnt mind that the bathtub was not up to std...needs a paint because of wall dampage.
We enjoyed the choice of restaurant for dinner which catered for diffrerent cultures.
We chose half board so the drinks were expensive so be prepared for that.
Yes there were birds flying about during breakfast but it was not bad.
The beach has beautiful white sand and the water is the blue like the pictures , but wear shoes if you are going in as there are corals.Carry lots of sunblock !
We enjoyed the parasailing, under water sea walk and island tour.

There no "real factory shops "...too expensive. You have to bargain on everything from a taxi to a tour.If you want to buy sarees , dont bother South Africa has a better variety and are reasonably priced.

Room Tip: Ask for sea facing

We had a relaxing stay at Le Meridien. Location is stunning and pool, facilities were great. Things that could improve; 1. The lobby shop (although not managed by hotel itself) is a rip-off. eg. the cheapest sunscreen lotion was Euro 24/ USD31. This may be a small point and, yes, I can afford it ... but leaves you with general feeling of being exploited because there is no-where else to buy these emergencies. 2. The water-sports staff gave mixed service. Mostly they were helpful except one case where my teenage son tried the windsurfer for the first time. The next morning he was very enthusiastic again, but at the beach kiosk the staff member accused him of tearing the sail on the previous day. I was quite shocked by this and clearly a few staff there havent had any customer service training and are 'raw'. Of course he was put off after that. Also, for the 5 days we were there (during school holidays), there was no attempt by the beach staff to organise a game of beach football, volleyball, etc. especially amongst teenagers which was a pity because everthing was there. This is noticeably different to say, Fiji, where beach staff seemed more interested, rather than just doing their job.

Room Tip: Check where you room is located, because hotel is very spread out and it is a long walk from the roo...

Having booked to stay at another hotel late in November for arrival on 30 Dec you can imagine our horror to get a phone call on 24 Dec to tell us they were double booked and could we move please! So "twas the night before Xmas" and all was definitely not right with the world in our house! We once again trawled thru the hotel sites and came up with a room at Le Meridien available for our dates - I was concerned given some of the negative reviews but hey we had to have somewhere to stay and as our stay included NYE we needed to book quickly.
On arrival we were checked in quite quickly (40 mins - any longer and we would have been getting a little upset after our long flight from Perth) we were advised they had "upgraded" us to the Nirwana adults only block with free internet in our room but no ocean view. We were happy to accept this as being the holiday season there were loads of little children around and we wanted some relaxing times by the pool so this was preferable.
Our room was a little shabby but it appeared clean, bed was comfortable, AC worked well, view was ho hum but we had a balcony being on the second floor (no lift) but not issue as porters took care of our bags. Bathroom was huge and clean. We were very happy with room and location.
We were on Full Board package which I highly recommend - it was novel not to have to pay for things as everything was included. Considering there is nowhere really to eat outside the hotel closeby unless you took a taxi the cost of which when added to the restaurant bill mean that opting for a full board package made sense and really when broken down was cost effective - we thought anyway.
We ate all our breakfasts at La Faya - special mention of Vimal who was very attentive and kind. Only three meals we ate in the other section - 180 and Cumin - both acceptable but I felt a little more budget - buffet serve yourself and Shells - nice enough lunch - but when we could eat at La Faya and sit down and be served with very nice food - not 5 star food but all the same very acceptable - we chose this option for nearly all meals. Did not pay any extra except for NYE dinner.
The pool at Nirwana was nice and I only saw children there once - but as we were on the eve of a cyclone which closed beaches and pools it was not an issue for long.
The beach at Nirwana is rocky - you do need footwear to swim - but the beach at the other section looked fine. We walked south to the next hotel and they definitely had a nicer beach but facilities looked very similar.
Taxi services were expensive but considering the drivers wait for you for a few hours really its very comparable and cheaper than services at home - not as cheap as Asia but we were not in Asia!
All staff we found very friendly and accommodating. Internet in the room was a little slow but not too bad - we both used simultaneously and no issues other than little slow - plus we used it out by Nirwana pool no problems.
We had an Indian head massage - 40 mins 2200 rupees in the spa- not something to really rave about but pleasant none the less.

So all in all despite some reservations we were both very happy with our stay at Le Meridien.

Room Tip: If kids bother you around the pool then choose to stay at Nirwana. Ask for ocean front room - they...
