“Paradise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

We stayed in November for a week on our honeymoon after stopping off for a few nights in Dubai. We were very impressed with the hotel but the staff were what set this place apart. We both felt that the staff were probably the best we have ever come across in a hotel.

The hotel itself was beautiful. The rooms were fairly large (we were in a luxury pavillion which was the basic room but it was perfectly adequate) and we had a terrace overlooking the sea on which we took breakfast. The breakfast was delicious and wide variety of choice.

There were three restaurants and we ate at them all but our personal favourite was the 'On the Rocks' restaurant which was BBQ style (not your average BBQ because the food involved angus beef rib and lobster and grilled scallops all done to perfection!). The Gunpowder restaurant was limited to 3 tables and the menu was a 5 course tasting menu. Although it was great service (again) and unsual but tasty food, we personally preferred being outside by the beach and the sea rather than inside but this may be a personal preference.

One night we had a meal on our own on the beach and the waiting staff had set this up with a wood buring fire and candles lighting the way to the table. This was the most romantic setting and really worthwhile the small surcharge to do it.

The beach did not have as soft sand as I was expecting and the safe area to swim was a little on the small side but you could get the boating staff to take you out snorkelling over the reef which was really breathtaking. We also made use of the complimentary watersports including water skiing. Zum was really helpful after my numerous failed attempts at getting up, he got me up in the end! Jeremy, Ravin and all the watersports staff were really great and a lot of fun. Ravin was the dive instructor who took us out on 2 dives which were really spectacular. We felf in safe hands and he showed us some amazing sights.

We played tennis every day and the courts were floodlit so that was good.

They sprayed the whole place for mozzies every day so we never got bitten which is a big plus for me as I have struggled in other hotels in similar climates.

Other points are that the drinks are dear but if you bring a few bottles from the airport we ordered an ice bucket every day and they were more than happy to bring it along to the room. In fact after a couple of nights of ringing to ask for one, they just brought it without us asking then.

I could go on but I think I would be repeating other reviews. In summary, a really beautiful, relaxing place with genuinely nice people running the place who seem to sincerely want to help you enjoy and relax. Its very hard not to.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room!

“the best Honeymoon we could have wished for....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

We honeymooned for 10 days at the oberoi back in August and as the majority of reviews describe the hotel is amazing. All aspects of this small luxury resort are top class and at all times you can see the attention to detail that goes into making a guests stay extra special. The rooms are fantastic and most have amazing views over the bay, the food we found to be first rate at both the main restaurant and the less formal beachfront 'on the rocks' bbq, where chef Jay did an amazing job of cooking delicious seafood and when knowing it was our last night at the hotel made us a 4 course 'seafood spectacle' made up of all the nice fish i had been commenting on during our stay. This single act for me sums up the hotel and what makes the hotel move from 'good' to 'great' and its the staff....at the oberoi all the staff are absolutely dedicated to making your stay special and they do so with absolute sincerity and this rings true across the entire resort from the spa, to the restaurant and the boys down in the water sports beach hut.

We tried several of the activities and enjoyed all of them - the wine tasting, star gazing, cookery classes, they were all really good fun and added to our stay. A highlight for us though was the water sports down at the private beach - every day we did something different from water sking to kayaking, there is something for everyone. We loved the dives we did with Ravine, who is a fantastic dive instructor and he took us on some dives that we will remember and talk about forever.

The final thing i'll mention that pretty much sums this place up and highlights the focus they put on the customer was the way in which we left the hotel. Despite it being fairly late into the evening we were personally waved off by Mark the hotel manager and around 6 members of staff.

I could go on and on...but most of it has been said. We had an absolutely amazing Honeymoon here and if you have any doubts.... don't.....just book it up, you wont regret it

“Best hotel we have ever stayed at! Amazing food, staff, villas”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks for our honeymoon - booking a villa with private pool.

From the moment we stepped foot in the hotel we did not lift a finger. The staff were very attentive and friendly.

The villa:
We were shown around the hotel and around our villa which was spacious, beautiful and practical all at the same time. We had a bathroom with a sunken bath (which was filled up with bubbles and rose petals for us on our last night, a surprise which we returned to find after dinner). The villas had nespresso machines as well as a kettle for tea etc - also a mini bar, but we didnt use that. Our pool was larger than we expected, it wasnt heated so refreshing would be the word for it in September. It was nice to have it so we could have privacy but actually the sun loungers on the beach are so spaced out from each other we often went to the beach in the afternoon as you didnt feel crammed in and each pair of bed had an umbrella. The villa had free wifi and really effective air conditioning so you could cool down in the heat of the day.

We used the small gym most days - we had to as we were eating so much scrummy food. There was a personal trainer on hand if you wanted.

The food:
There was not one meal we did not say 'wow' at! The food was incredible - the service was perfect too. We often spent 2 hrs dining in the evening, if not longer. There is not a lot else to do and we enjoyed people watching and taking our time. You are neither rushed or kept waiting. We ate in the main restaurant often but did book for the On The Rocks restaurant too which is more casual but food is just as good. The chef cooks it all on a bbq on the beach!
On our last night we booked a private dining area on the beach - the staff lay up a table, a fire and a pathway lined with candles. It was so romantic and we ate, drank champagne right in front of the sea. So special.

We also dined in our outside dining area, which is next to the pool but under a thatched roof. It cost no extra and you ordered off the same menu as in the main restaurant. It would be brought to your villa and the dining area set up by the waiting staff. It was nice change of scenery and we had some privacy.

Half board:
We were advised to go half board as it was better value - Im not sure if it does actually save that much money for sure but it does make your holiday more enjoyable. We never once looked at the prices on the menu, but they were on there and it wasnt cheap. We enjoyed it more knowing we had paid in advance for food and didnt have to pay as you go, as such. My husband thinks it saved us money although I not sure how much.

Activities:
Once morning was overcast so we decided to join an walk around the hold with an ecologist. It was very interesting, not just for keen gardners. You learn so much about the country and the history of the hotel too.
After that positive experience (we arent really the people to join hotel organised activities normally) we decided to go to the cookery demonstration. They cooked a traditional Mauritian curry outdoors. And then we ate it! It tasted amazing, and we got a copy of the recipe to take home!
All these activities are free.

I cannot rate this hotel enough. If we were to return we may not bother with a villa with a pool as the beach is so nice and quiet.

If you book through Trailfinders for your honeymoon you get a big discount.

Room Tip: Villa 111 is one of best villas. It is near sea and not far to walk to beach/dining area
