“Amazing Honeymoon, Excellent Service, Friendly Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2009

Stayed here for 10 nights when on honeymoon. My wife and I had a fantastic time. The room was really amazing, nice views of the garden and beach. The Bed was very comfortable and the bathroom design was brilliant because it had shutters you could open and close. The hotel staff were very friendly and attentive and the grounds and the Oriental design meant that the it was all very relaxing.

I'm not sure that I could have picked a better hotel in the area for our honeymoon, we were both certainly very happy with our stay.

Best Bits

Room - amazing room, was about a luxiourious as we could have hoped for.

Setting - the hotel grounds are really well put together, the gardens are very well kept and look amazing in the sun. The views of the mountains from the Spa are also very soothing. The beach was very nice and not too busy.

Staff - all very friendly, the restaurant team were superb and looked after both of us really well.

Tipping - there is no tipping required! The approach taken is to leave a tip at the end of the stay and that is divided up between the staff. This works well and avoids any awkward situations when doing anything around the hotel.

Food - my wife was in love with the buffet dining experiences, the huge arrays of dishes meant that there was something for everybody. The only slight catch is that if you are there more than 6 or so nights the menus loop back around, but given the huge choices you should still be kept entertained.

Minor Niggles
Lots of ants .. these seemed to present in our room and would go for our toilet and the mini-bar area. For the most part they were a mild annoyance, the Room service people were very good in helping to keep them at bay

Half board is recommended because the food at the hotel otherwise is quite expensive. The only downside is that when the hotel is not that full they move away from the fantastic buffets to a set menu service which did restrict choice.

Was in Mauritius for a short business trip with my colleague. I'm not sure whether it's the winter season in Aug that is keeping the tourists away, as the hotel was generally pretty quiet. It's a good hour car ride from the air port and 30 mins from Port Louis, the capital. For those who crave for some peace and quiet, away from the hectic city life, this is the perfect hotel.

The rooms were GREAT. Big, roomy, with the most comfy bed I have ever slept on. I stayed in one that has a balcony that looks out to the sea (though the view was kind of blocked by some coconut trees, but never mind). Perfect place to chill with a glass of wine with your loved one. Beach was nice with blue crystal clear waters and white sand. Do catch the sunset if you can, cos it would take your breath away. The pool was big, but really too freezing cold but anyone to swim in for long. Breakfast was alright, could do with more spread.

August is in the Mauritian winter but temperatures hit around 23-24C in the day so it is very pleasant and not too hot. Although a small island, the weather really does vary dramatically with the location. This hotel is on the west coast which means it is not windy unlike the east or south. A taxi driver told us the hotels on the west and north coasts are best for the Mauritian winter so this was a good choice for us.
We travelled with a family of 5 including 2 children and an infant. The room we were given was a prestige villa which was ideal as it was divisible into 2 separate rooms by a big sliding door. The kids slept on a decent sofa bed and had their own bathroom. The main bed was a king size and there was a separate cot for the baby. House keeping was good.
We were full board and the food was excellent. Breakfast was a variety buffet and lunch and dinner were 4 course meals. Dinners were often themed nights and with top class service.
The hotel has its own beautiful beach within a large turquoise lagoon and plenty of free water sports including water skiing and doughnut rides, not forgetting the huge swimming pool - (though there is no life guard and it is not heated so is a bit cool). Scuba diving (strongly recommended) is at a reasonable price from the in house dive centre. Trips to local islands and excursions around the island are best arranged through the hotel as we found these to be more reasonably priced.
The only room for improvement I would suggest is for the dining areas to be made non-smoking and for the spa to be segregated for males and females - as it was mixed, we didn't use it. The pool should be guarded and preferably heated this time of year. Also, it could do with free internet access, some thoughts for the management after all this is the 21st century. Otherwise, an excellent resort.

My husband and I decided to take our 20 month old toddler along for a wonderful holiday in the sun, but she unexpectedly fell ill and the staff was unbelievably sympathetic. There were several nights which we could not attend the inclusive dinner and NIdza Josef (the fantastic PRO) would arrange for our meals to be delivered to our room (at no additional room service charge). A doctor was swiftly arranged and medication was delivered to the hotel as well. All staff in the restaurant was extremely efficient (especially Sam at the Ravinala restaurant). They would remember finer details; like how I’d like my eggs done or my favorite juice at breakfast. The food was 5 star gourmet and a different menu was prepared every night. It is overall an excellent place for families and great value for money!

We went to the Sofitel for our anniversary. On arrival the service was excellent, simple check in and shown to our room and given a brief on the facilities in the room and in the hotel in general. The room was big and spacious, probably the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in. The hotel has an Asian feel to it, and we were lucky when we went as it was off season, so only 40% full. We had decided to go half board as the reviews that we had read about the area were not very forthcoming with places to eat. The first night there we ate at the beach restaurant where the food was good, steak, chicken etc. From then on it went down hill. There is a Chinese and Japanese restaurant there, however they seemed to close on certain days of the week, and also a Signature restaurant down on the beach, which also closed on certain days. As we had only gone for 6 nights, this affected our stay and we ended up going to Citronella in the Sugar Beach hotel (2 hotels down) and also to the Beach restauran in the Sugar Beach, with the first one being an International style cuisine and the second more of a fish speciality. We were pleased that we weren't staying at the Sugar Beach as it was very loud with a families and young people crowd, and this is why we wouldn't go half board. Our one great meal at the Sofitel was the Teppenyaki which was a great experience, if you have never done it and we got 50% off the bill as we were half board. There were 2 sittings for the meal and it felt a bit rushed towards the end, but well worth doing if you have never seen it before. We also ended up having Room Service on our Balcony which was great too.

As regards expense in Mauritius, I can understand why Europeans find it expensive, with the cheapest wine on the list being $50 US (about 30 pounds), however if you venture outside of the hotel which we did one night to Domain Anna an Asian Fusion restaurant the wine was about 60% cheaper. Food was quite pricey in comparison with Europe and bottles of water and drinks were pricey. As we came from Dubai it was about the same price as we normally pay.

Overall the hotel was outstanding with service and the staff being very friendly, we were even given a personal invite by the manager to attend his cocktail party, everyone else was there from the hotel, but it was a nice touch. I would recommend this to anyone, it was great, I just hope the restaurants stay open for you.

My husband and I stayed at the Sofitel for five nights at the end of June. We chose the hotel as it was not too cheap nor way too expensive and they offered bed and breakfast rather than insisting on half board or all inclusive packages. We booked through Expedia as we could not access the hotel website to successfully complete our transaction in China (this may have more to do with controls here than the website itself).

It is a beautiful hotel and we cannot recommend it highly enough. We arrived very early in the morning and were greeted warmly and given ice cold towels and a fruit drink to welcome us while we completed arrival formalities. We were shown to our room with our luggage arriving the same time as we did (it had been magically whisked away!). And this warmth continued right throughout our stay. Staff are genuinely friendly and warm and happy to help and it makes a big difference.

Location is excellent and the local bus to Port Louis is a short walk away. Plenty of taxis into Flic en Flac or you could just walk along the beach or on the road if you prefer.

The room itself was spacious and I loved the walk in closet and the shoe rack by the door, especially useful if like us, you walk along the beautiful stretch of beach for miles - no sand in the room! Also liked the separate his and hers sinks, separate shower and bath and most of all the separate toilet. And we loved the balcony with chairs and a table - perfect for when you wanted to escape the sun or rain showers (which were few, sharp, short bursts of rain). The room was spotless and cleaned regularly with a turn-down service in the evening. The daily activity sheet with the weather forecast and the complimentary daily bottle of drinking water were nice, welcome additions.

Breakfast was a buffet with something for everyone. The much discussed birds were little sparrows that could easily be swished away with a flick of a serviette and the staff did try to tempt them away from the breakfast area by feeding them bread away from the area. They were not the large birds of prey that I was expecting after reading some of the comments!! It was lovely to be welcomed by smiles every morning and to have your breakfast cooked for you with a smile (the crepes were heavenly and resulted in a slightly tighter waistband at the end of our holiday but were worth it!). The variety and choice was excellent and you would have to be a very fussy eater not to find something at that buffet.

We did not eat our other meals in the hotel but took taxis into Flic en Flac and had some wonderful meals there. This is no reflection on the hotel - we simply like exploring and eating out. The hotel staff were more than helpful on the one evening we couldn't get a taxi and rang round the other hotels to get us a taxi - they offered before we even asked as the girl on the front desk noticed a lack of taxis outside.

The grounds are beautiful and we loved the options available - French garden with sun loungers, day beds and hammocks and plenty of them or you could sun loungers on the beach. The red and green flags were great - red if you did not want to be disturbed and green if you wanted something. The only sounds we heard were of birds chirping, waves and the Ukrainian group practising - perfect for us who wanted to escape a hectic noisy city.

Their PR lady, Nidza Joseph, was always around, chatting to guests and ensuring everything was fine and there was nothing that appeared to be too much trouble for any of the staff. Their warmth (and indeed that of all the Mauritians we came across while we pootled around) was genuine and not the forced smiles you get in some places.

We would definitely go back to the Sofitel if we went back to Mauritius.

My family (a group of 6 including a 2 year old child) and I had a great stay in May 2009. Eveything was great: beautiful luxury rooms, very helpful and kind staff, great choice of food.
The place is beautiful (well it s mauritius) and very relaxing, especially the beach and the spa. There is even a gym (with a nice view over the japanese garden). The scuba diving instructors are also very good. The only negative thing i can think of is that the bicycles were not available for free.
I would highly recommend it to everybody except maybe those wanting to party all night long. We travelled there off-season and the place was quite empty in the evening (a pity, because there was a very good music band!).
